Hi, I'm having a problem updating my Mac Pro 4.1> 5.1. Currently I have Sierra 10.12.6 with EFI MP51.007F.B03. I decided to go to 10.13.4 and I downloaded it from the Appstore.

My MacPro being equipped with a RX580 I removed it to install the original GT120.
I have an AHCI SSD on PCI card that is still in the Mac. The problem is that when the installer offers to click on "Turn off" to update the EFI, I enter my password but nothing happens and the Macpro does not stretch. I tried to maintain the "power" button but the EFI update does not work.

I have tried from my main AHCI disk or from an SSD also equipped with Sierra but it does not work. If I access the "FirmwareUpdate" file of the High Sierra package I have the same message as bsbeamer # 76. For now I download again 10.13.4 from the Appstore but I'm afraid it does not change anything.

You’re installing via USB/createinstallmedia? 10.13.4 has a bug with updating the firmware when booting via USB/createinstallmedia, run the installer on macOS, update the firmware then you can install from scratch.

I install it from Mac OS on my AHCI PCIe SSD, I have also tried from a SATA SSD. I have re-downloaded the installer but the problem persists.

Should I try from an HDD?

When I was having trouble updating, I removed all cards/RAID disks/etc and installed 10.12.6 on a plain HDD (without another partitions/with GPUID), with only the Apple GT120 installed. Then I finally downloaded HighSierra from Mac App Store and updated without trouble.

Maybe you have another variable causing trouble, try to run the installer with the basic hardware config.

The update of the EFI finally worked. I do not know exactly what was wrong but I removed my SSD (Windows 10 installed on it only) and made the installation of High Sierra from a clone of my system on an internal HDD.
I guess the update of the EFI had problem since a SSD (Samsung SM951 and Crucial MX 300).

On the other hand I notice that in the PCI information (which was not displayed before with Sierra and the RX 580) that the RX 580 (slot 1) at a link speed of 2.5 GT / s while my SSD AHCI ( slot 4) is at 5 GT / s, is this normal?

I have a MacPro5,1 with an "official" white Sapphire 7950 Mac Edition installed. I'm 99% sure (without opening the case to confirm) that the jumper is set for Mac mode. Will I be able to install 10.13.4 without having to swap the original card back in? Seems like it but then I read stuff like pinchu71's upstream post and I wonder ...
That's the card I originally wanted bc I like the look of it. I wound up with this one instead, and still waiting for the dual mini 6 pin to 8 pin adapter connector wire to come from ebay.

I just finished updating from 4,1 to 5,1 on El Capitan. Then updated to High Sierra with no problems. I'm on Boot ROM Version: MP51.0089.B00.

The interesting part that I wasn't aware before updating to High Sierra was that I had to do the hold the power button and wait for the flashing LED. Same thing when you finish updating to 5,1.

Is there anything that should be aware after the process? Am I going to encounter any problems?
Thanks

My video card is the Sapphire 7950 Mac Edition.

I just did same upgrade to OS X 13.6 and held the Power button. That was only a few hours ago, so I can't help you with any history of problems yet. (hopefully NEVER LOL). I have the Optane 900P SSD , on a PCIe, and trying to get it running. That's why I am here now. I just upgraded my CPU today too. I went with the X5690 3.46Mhz. That is on my other 5,1 2010 Mac Pro which will also be getting the rx580 Radeon Sapphire graphics card (pictured) when the dual power jumper wire arrives from ebay next week. Then I will be upgrading to OS X Mojave. I read recently that the Sapphire cards give a much better video experience, so I am excited to get it installed ASAP! BTW, I am typing this on a 2012 iMac 27". I get my info/instructions on the iMac and do the upgrades tinkering on the Mac Pro. How do you like the 7950 so far?

7950 Mac Edition can do all firmware update so far. And no post installation process required.

Read here to know what to do next MP5,1: What you have to do to upgrade to Mojave.

Everything seems to be ok but, when I shut down last night I noticed a few pixels on the screen acting a bit strange. I run some Benchmarks to make sure everything was going well. My plan is to install the Rx580 Pulse on the machine. Already got it but I need to get an adapter for the Display Port since the Rx580 doesn't needs a HDMI or DVI.

The 7950 does an ok job and I think it would be fine if I kept it for the type I work I do, which is graphic design. I'll keep you guys posted if I come across anything strange.

Thanks Alex,
Now that I have most of the stuff in place I will upgrade to Mojave as soon as I get the processors and the USB 3.0 card.
Have you read about the screen flickering or pixels artifacts after updating to HS?

Almost all AMD GPUs have artefacts when shutting down, some have with start up too. Seems that the driver don't clear the frame buffer correctly, it's an old bug. Some people have screen flickering, but seems that happen with some cables/monitors, it's not widespread.
