Good to hear about the play count and meta data! I have many custom covers that I made myself for my own music, any issues with covers you added yourself or is it mostly the automatic cover download feature that has had issues?

I have a few (my own) guitar recordings 🎸with my own custom artwork - the custom Artwork did not make it to Music - although the art work does still show in the center of the window at the top so it is partially there - see screen shot below

On a side note - FWIW - I checked the custom lyrics and they all seem to be intact - so the initial import work fine for almost all the meta data 👍 - with the exception of Artwork 😥.

Thanks for the screenshot of the album view! Is there a way to make the tracks a bit smaller? In iTunes I had 2 rows of tracks and I could display up to 75 tracks on one page on my 27 inch iMac. Wonder if it's possible to view more tracks at once on a large screen because viewing only 12 tracks seems like a waste of space (if the album is longer than 12 tracks). Maybe it has to do with resolution and scaling of the OS? Seems like it should be able to show a lot more tracks at once!

No way to make them smaller and view more than 14 tracks - on the 32 inch LG screen - but it does scroll down and offer any past 14 by scrolling down. Could be my resolution / scalling - i did not mess with that - I prefer song view and it handles that

This image is from an old iTunes version that I found on google but it shows the 2 rows of tracks in album view that is also in the latest version of iTunes: albums-view-100608289-large970.idge.png

that is similar to my screen shot on post 121 ? anyway it is now a separate page

Nice, do you use logic for recording and arranging? That's too bad about the artwork! Should really not be an issue after 2 OS versions with the Music app. I haver a lot of custom artwork so this sounds really annoying. But as long as it displays when you play music and open albums I guess it should be fine.

Yes, the link from google was showing the same as your screenshot on post 121. by having 2 columns you could display so many more tracks, but I'll hope that it's a scaling resolution setting! Seems like a waste of space to only be able to view 14 tracks on a 32 inch screen. My iPad 9,7 inch can view the same amount or more depending on landscape or horisontal orientation of the iPad lol.

Thanks a lot for the info and screenshots! I am considering upgrading now, but the missing artwork and only being able to view 14 tracks at once in album view are dealbreakers for me as I always use album view, even in playlists. Will maybe wait a few months, like I usually do with macOS updates and see if they change anything or sort out the artwork bug. The separate page for albums I can live with even though I prefer the drop down menu.

But at least this version seems much improved to the Catalina music app! I love the rest of the changes in Big Sur so will see if I will just update on my laptop where I only stream music using iTunes Match (my library in full quality is on the iMac)!

TBH - I feel artwork has been messed up since iTunes 12.6 - and it is the same in Mojave if you migrate to a new install etc. - so it is not just a Music / Catalina / Big Sur issue - it seems to be something that happened during the "Music Match" in iTunes 12.6 and onward - again just - IMHO

I moved to Spotify for streaming and replaced music match, it seems much better selection than Apple music (streaming) - and has almost all the music I have in my existing library of CD's and purchased music - great selection - now I don't really see any reason to buy any new music files - it all seems to be available on Spotify - as far as I can tell

Big Sur does seem better than Catalina - IMHO - and the Music app is still - "a better way to manage music files" - than windows or any other computer app - again just my opinion

Well, after converting my entire library to ALAC, re-normalizing song volumes (by track) with BeaTunes, and pulling my hair out, it appears that the Flat EQ and Preamp +10 settings were causing songs to start really loudly and then normalize in volume, sometimes staying overly loud until Pause/Play was pressed. This is all with Sound Check on.

Baffling. But hey, it's a beta!

Sign out of Apple Music, then in again. That should fix it.
UPDATE: the fix only worked for a few minutes, now broken again.
Thanks for your reply, unfortunately I’d already tried that and several other potential fixes. Gone back to a clean install of Catalina for now as I use the For You section quite a bit. I also want a more stable base to upgrade from when Big Sur is released. I couldn’t be sure if some of the other bugs I was seeing were down to Beta code or a bad install.

That's a negative. All my reported bugs are still present in 1.1.0.282.
Agreed - still getting the persistent defaulting to 'Album Artwork' on 'Songs' view, when my preferred default option is 'last played'...despite reporting it. Not difficult to overcome but irritating to have to do so every time.

Good news: Song volume does not get lowered a few seconds after playback anymore — Sound Check was causing the issue before, not the EQ settings. It's fixed as of Music app v1.1.0.282 on Big Sur 11.0.1 Beta 1. (cc @ErikGrim)

1) I know how hard can that be to fix? Art Work On / Off Song View - It used to work fine

2 Other Pet Peeves still not fixed - 2) "Show filter field" (Alt + CMD+F) does not persist and 3) Art Work is buggy - shows in one place but does not display in other areas ?

I have submitted these to feedback assistant and they show as "Recent Similar Reports: None" :(

I think I will start resubmitting them ever new beta as an update to previous submissions.

Couldn't resist, tried beta 11.01 but it's still broken for me. Also tried with another AppleID and broken on that too. So it looks like it might be broken across the board until closer to the official release. I seem to remember something similar happening last time before Catalina came out.

I am reading this topic for a while now and I seriously don’t understand why Apple isn’t putting more effort in fixing its Music app. I mean, iTunes was (quite) bad but the ”new” Music app is even worse. It is the main reason I haven’t switched from Spotify to Apple Music. I understand that a new app can be a little bit buggy, but the Music app is one year old now and there’s a new OS release coming up and they haven’t even fixed the bugs introduced in Catalina.

Don’t they know how to make a good music app? The iPod was a lifesaver for Apple, yet its accompanying app iTunes was always a dread to use. Slow and bloated. Now they finally ditched it in favor of a “new” Music app and it looks like they haven’t learned from their mistakes.

My guess is, that they are rewriting it, instead of fixing the current codebase. Music app is based on iTunes after all, just without the irrelevant parts.

I have no issue with the "Listen Now" tab. Probably a localised server-side issue.
Yeah, most likely. Only question is, is it deliberate or are they unaware of it. I’ve reported it anyway. It doesn’t work for me across two different accounts, on different networks, even VPNing to the US.

An excellent summary of the most aggravating issues with Music. I've added it to the main post. Please submit this through the feedback assistant as well.

Here's another inconsistency that I don't understand - Artist images that don't appear in the Music app on the Mac, but do appear in the Music app on the iPhone - example 1 here shows Phone app with Robert Johnson pic shown, example two shows Mac version - no Robert Johnson image. Surely they are sharing the same image database?

I will raise you... Here are three comparisons, which is quite comical. First is my Mac, then my iPhone (which has a few more images than the Mac), then Apple Music on my Android. Which one shows images for every single artist? The Android version! That app takes the approach of putting album artwork for any that are missing artist images.

Here's a fun new one I've discovered: Opening lyrics while filter field is open will remove the filter field and clear what was in it.

Still no improvement with latest version ☹️
