LOL.. really? I could care less when asleep.. this is part of the apple first world problem issue, everyone wants everything to be perfect! Just enjoy the phone😁

Guess what? That's you. I didn't pay $1200 to get a phone that would let me know what time it is in the middle of the night for it not to do just that.

So while my issue might not be a big deal to you, it is to others like myself that bought the phone mainly for that one advertised feature that was clearly misadvertised from day one.

Darn them for thinking you’d be asleep.

I find it pretty funny that this need you have is so strong yet you will return the sometimes always on display for a never always on display. At least with the former you would have a chance of waking and seeing a screen that is on. So what is this really about?

Thank you. Apparently the "turns off if it hasn't been used in a while" might be my issue. Nonetheless, that's a stupid feature I can't live with. I like to be able to look at the phone on my night stand w/o having to touch it to see the time and any notifications. What good does this always on feature do me when I have to touch the screen in the middle of the night because I haven't used the phone in a while.

Back it goes to Apple.....
You've got to be kidding...

Had a call with support about this and they said it was by design so I mentioned it would be nice to have the option for the user to adjust it so she opened a case to have that considered. Hope they will.

There is a support document about this https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT213435 and you do have 14 days to return the phone.

😂 all these people upset with you over being annoyed that a feature doesn’t work the way you want it too, a feature that’s implied to work the way you want it to in the name.

I’m not returning the phone, but turned off the aod this morning when I woke up for the same reason. I don’t really need it during the day. Wanted it for night when I randomly wake up to see what time it is

Pretty simple, return it. Someone will be happy that one will be available after you do.

They would not resell one he has already opened and used. It will go through a refurbishment process, and may be offered as a replacement for someone's faulty or damaged iPhone sometime in the future. At some point, if it makes it that far, it may also be offered for sale on Apple's online refurbished section. But the former is more likely

It's about their always on display not always being on or even having the option to be just that, always on. That's what this is all about.

I have not yet seen my display turn off, I mean only been 30 hours since I picked it up. And I have left it for many hours without touching it. I do have it sitting in a MagSafe charging dock not sure if that changes anything.

This feature was the main feature why I decided to upgrade from my 13 Pro Max and it doesn't work right. I noticed several times last night my always on feature wasn't on. I would have to tap the screen to get it to show the display. It would stay on for a while but then it would turn off again. I did a full master reset and the phone does the same thing.

Anyone else having this issue? I will return the phone if I can't figure it out because I can say with 100% certainty this phone isn't worth coming from a 13 Pro Max.
Ozziegn, and others, you might check some of the focus settings. My wife and I both bought the 14 Pro Max and the always on stayed on all night over about 6 to 7 hours. It never once went out. We do not use "sleep" focus, but both use a simple do not disturb. Perhaps this will help.

You've got to be kidding...

Why would I be kidding? Apple might be able to oooh and ahhh millions of people by slapping new coats of paint on their previous flagship devices and call them the newest, latest and greatest. But that doesn't mean people like myself will buy. I buy new things because I either want them or I need them. I have always wanted to know the time in the middle of the night on my iPhones. I thought this new iPhone was just that.

Clearly it's not. (and once again, no I'm not kidding.)

I can see why they would want to limit the AOD for battery management but there’s no reason why it should turn off when it’s charging.

Well, for one thing, it means you don‘t have the light from the screen keeping you awake.

I haven’t experienced this yet but I haven’t particularly been looking out for it either. Every time I have looked at my phone so far, it has always been on. I do notice after a while it goes even dimmer though.

I can see the frustration behind it but I also I don’t think it’s necessarily something to get so worked up about. It’s probably something that can easily be fixed with a software update.

I will buy another if and when Apple does add the option to give us what they actually advertise. But for now, it isn't as advertised.
