I’m the opposite - sleep in a dark room with as few lights as possible so I want it off when I’m sleeping

But I use do not disturb rather than sleep focus so it doesn’t turn off. Should be user definable in each focus mode along with an ‘always means always’ override toggle

I feel old. I have a digital clock on my nightstand that I look at if I wake up and want to check the time.
I used to have a clock next to my bed and on my desk but what got rid of them was when I got my first Apple Watch. I then noticed how ... they were all off a little bit and it drove me nuts. LOL.

So no more clocks for me. My Apple Watch does it for me.

A few times I've tried to get a wall/desk clock again but the moment it loses a minute I just can't stand it.

Ever since the AW3 the haptic feedback for an alarm clock has been amazing. I can wear ear plugs to bed and sleep really well.

I do miss clocks. So, I have installed: Atomic Clock, Chronometer/Geneva, and Time by Emerald & Sequoia for my "clock" fixes. (I run them for a few mins now and then). I just enjoy watching a clock every now and then. <shrug>.

Apologies for the off topic.

Why would I be kidding? Apple might be able to oooh and ahhh millions of people by slapping new coats of paint on their previous flagship devices and call them the newest, latest and greatest. But that doesn't mean people like myself will buy. I buy new things because I either want them or I need them. I have always wanted to know the time in the middle of the night on my iPhones. I thought this new iPhone was just that.

Clearly it's not. (and once again, no I'm not kidding.)
I feel bad for you. But it's your decision, so I'm glad you are happy with your choice. But to be so fickle over their implementation of the always on display (which is always on whenever you are looking at it) is silly.

An AOD needs to be exactly that, always on. It's cool that the screen turns off if you place it face down, in pockets, etc. I have a feeling Apple will provide a software update that allows users to keep the AOD always on. They could easily dim the screen more than it currently is while this setting is on if battery life is a concern.

Can you imagine if the Apple Watch Series 5 turned its AOD off after a certain amount of time when it first launched while wearing it? it's one of the main features of the 14 Pro models and right now it's not living up to its name. It's a sometimes AOD.
My S6 turns off AOD when sleep focus turns on at midnight and turns AOD back on at 8am.. I understand it does this because of sleep focus and I think the new iPhone should follow the same criteria.. Hopefully they tweak the settings to allow AOD to work all the time unless you would like it to shut off under certain conditions/situations

I’m sorry, I find it 100% ridiculous that the AOD turns off when you haven’t ‘used your phone in a while’. That defeats completely the purpose of an AOD.

Sure, turn off when flipped, or in a pocket or bag. I even understand turning off when on low power mode. But just because you haven’t used your phone in a while? Nope, not on board with that.

At the very least that needs to be a user-defined toggle setting.
The sometimes-on display. But yeah, we can hope for more customization for AOD. As of now, there’s literally none, just off or on.

I think we’ll see more tweaks and options added to it overtime.
A welcome one would be displaying just clock/prioritised notifications as my old AMOLED S7 did. It’s OLED, after all, it can light individual pixels only. But it’s Apple, and Apple does things Apple way, making OLED look like a dimmed LCD screen. Personally, I like it the way it is, but more customization would always be appreciated.

Samsung will make a commercial mocking the “sometimes always on” display. I hope they do cause that’s the only way Apple will take action and fix it via a software update

Forgive me if I'm behind the times, but these are OLED right?

How can they do this without some kind of burn in? It doesn't surprise me that they can, but I have this sort of innate fear of this, after so many years.

I imagine most of you will say it's because it's so dim. But even then.... I don't know. Maybe they do something else, like move it slightly, or rotate images (I don't think they do that). I wonder what they do. I have one on order, but you know, I will ALWAYS think about that. But I suppose after I while I won't, which would be a relief :D

They time will always change so the chance of burn-in is null

Mine was on charger last night, not in sleep mode. When I woke up this morning, my AOD wasn’t on.

Same happened to me, and even earlier today when I was playing Xbox and not using my iPhone (AW was still close enough) and it turned the screen completely off multiple times, until I tapped the screen or a text/notification etc. came through, but the screen would eventually turn back off.

I am with everyone else saying it is essentially false advertising. Hope they come out with a quick update that makes it a truly always on display, or an update that the user can switch on/off...which will give people a choice as to whether they want their iPhones screens to turn off after "X Amount of time."

I can live with it for now, but I would like an update.

Interesting people have so many varied experiences. Since getting my phone Friday, the AOD has never been off when I’ve looked at it except when I was expecting it to be off (CarPlay and sleep focus). Otherwise, it’s always on. I use sleep focus cause I couldn’t ever even stand the light from my watch AOD, and sleep focus turns that one off as well.

AOD is working great on my phone. My friend told me it turned off when I walked away today, but when I came back it was on before I could get eyes on it
