It could be Apple modifies the algorithm or not. For me I’m not returning the phone and if I have to tap the glass in the middle of the night , so be it. ymmv.I will buy another if and when Apple does add the option to give us what they actually advertise. But for now, it isn't as advertised.
Wanted it for night when I randomly wake up to see what time it is

I have not yet seen my display turn off, I mean only been 30 hours since I picked it up. And I have left it for many hours without touching it. I do have it sitting in a MagSafe charging dock not sure if that changes anything.
Any idea how long it was untouched before it turned off?Correction, it just went off![]()
This feature was the main feature why I decided to upgrade from my 13 Pro Max and it doesn't work right. I noticed several times last night my always on feature wasn't on. I would have to tap the screen to get it to show the display. It would stay on for a while but then it would turn off again. I did a full master reset and the phone does the same thing.
Anyone else having this issue? I will return the phone if I can't figure it out because I can say with 100% certainty this phone isn't worth coming from a 13 Pro Max.
I think the bone of contention in this thread is the conditions for what is determined as the "not in use" length of time it takes for AOD to turn off.To those that are upset about the display turning off under certain conditions, I’m genuinely curious, are you wanting the display to never turn off, with the exception of being powered off? Do you want it to stay on when in a pocket or bag? When on low power mode? When connected to CarPlay? Are you okay with those exceptions, and just bothered it may turn off while you’re sleeping? Or do you truly want the display to be “Always On”, at all times, no matter what, while it has power?
Not yet but watching it.Any idea how long it was untouched before it turned off?

Yes, some are contending with that question, which is legitimate. But, things like false advertising are also being said with comments about people expecting something being advertised as always on that it would be, in fact, always on. It just isn't realistic for the display to always be on. It makes sense for it to turn off while face down or in a pocket, while connected to CarPlay, etc. People should understand that there were always bound to be caveats to the Always On Display. I don't think anyone actually wants the display to always remain on. That would be unnecessary and foolish.I think the bone of contention in this thread is the conditions for what is determined as the "not in use" length of time it takes for AOD to turn off.
You would get burn in if they didn’t make it turn off after a while. Android does this too. It’s to save the display. If you want an “always on” clock to check in the middle of the night, get a $10 alarm clock, not a $1200 phone 😆Guess what? That's you. I didn't pay $1200 to get a phone that would let me know what time it is in the middle of the night for it not to do just that.
So while my issue might not be a big deal to you, it is to others like myself that bought the phone mainly for that one advertised feature that was clearly misadvertised from day one.

Don’t they pixel shift to prevent that? You would get burn in if they didn’t make it turn off after a while. Android does this too. It’s to save the display. If you want an “always on” clock to check in the middle of the night, get a $10 alarm clock, not a $1200 phone 😆
Now you know Apple doesn't let you have too many choices. It's just an on/off toggle.I don’t have a iPhone 14 but is there an AOD area in the display settings where you can adjust brightness and duration? Just asking and apologies if it was already brought up.
OP just return it and move on. Why bother explaining yourself in this thread? Makes no sense to me.
That is my understanding. I don’t use AOD on my samsung phone but my wife does. It never shuts off and in the 2+ years she has had the phone, there are zero signs of burn in. Considering how susceptible OLED can be to burn in, it’s impressive tech.Don’t they pixel shift to prevent that?
