I will buy another if and when Apple does add the option to give us what they actually advertise. But for now, it isn't as advertised.

Fair enough. Maybe I’m just too laid back, but for this feature to be the make or break of whether you keep the phone or not seems like an expensive amount to spend on something to begin with, whether it worked how you wanted it to or not. We’re all different though.

This feature was the main feature why I decided to upgrade from my 13 Pro Max and it doesn't work right. I noticed several times last night my always on feature wasn't on. I would have to tap the screen to get it to show the display. It would stay on for a while but then it would turn off again. I did a full master reset and the phone does the same thing.

Anyone else having this issue? I will return the phone if I can't figure it out because I can say with 100% certainty this phone isn't worth coming from a 13 Pro Max.

Two questions:
1. Was your phone charging all night?
2. Do you sleep in a very dark room (with no light)?

My 14 Pro Max was charging all night and I had Do Not Disturb mode on and my AOD was always on.

My guess is if you are in a totally dark room, it’s possible that it’s treated like being in a pocket and the AOD turns off.

To those that are upset about the display turning off under certain conditions, I’m genuinely curious, are you wanting the display to never turn off, with the exception of being powered off? Do you want it to stay on when in a pocket or bag? When on low power mode? When connected to CarPlay? Are you okay with those exceptions, and just bothered it may turn off while you’re sleeping? Or do you truly want the display to be “Always On”, at all times, no matter what, while it has power?

i usually use sleep mode as i sleep with my apple watch for sleep tracking and can confirm it turns off in sleep focus but i usually use my watch to check time if i ever wake up in the middle of the night, which is rare for me.

I think the bone of contention in this thread is the conditions for what is determined as the "not in use" length of time it takes for AOD to turn off.

There are many variables likely at play in establishing when the phone shuts off AOD. Rhetorically speaking, if it shuts off at night for some people but not others, then what length of time? Do they need to also be in DND mode and does the elapsed time start there? What if the user is wearing an Apple Watch for sleep tracking, shouldn't the AOD stay on because the wearer is still near the phone despite being in bed? Is a certain focus state needed? What about charging status during all this? Etc.

I'm sure in time users will collectively figure them out, or Apple will provide more guidance, hopefully.

Any idea how long it was untouched before it turned off?
Yesterday:

I went to a take shower (less than 20 mins). When I came back it was off.

I went to watch TV in my living room (an hour or so). When I came back it was off.

I was at my desk next to the phone (various amounts of time). It did NOT turn off.

I will say that for as much as it has been on it has already saved me many taps to wake the screen to check widgets and notifications. It is exactly why I wanted AOD. However, I would have preferred it stayed on -- truly, persistently on -- at all times except when facing down or in pocket.

🤔 🤷‍♂️

Yes, some are contending with that question, which is legitimate. But, things like false advertising are also being said with comments about people expecting something being advertised as always on that it would be, in fact, always on. It just isn't realistic for the display to always be on. It makes sense for it to turn off while face down or in a pocket, while connected to CarPlay, etc. People should understand that there were always bound to be caveats to the Always On Display. I don't think anyone actually wants the display to always remain on. That would be unnecessary and foolish.

Guess what? That's you. I didn't pay $1200 to get a phone that would let me know what time it is in the middle of the night for it not to do just that.

So while my issue might not be a big deal to you, it is to others like myself that bought the phone mainly for that one advertised feature that was clearly misadvertised from day one.
You would get burn in if they didn’t make it turn off after a while. Android does this too. It’s to save the display. If you want an “always on” clock to check in the middle of the night, get a $10 alarm clock, not a $1200 phone 😆

I don’t have a iPhone 14 but is there an AOD area in the display settings where you can adjust brightness and duration? Just asking and apologies if it was already brought up.

Don’t they pixel shift to prevent that?

OP just return it and move on. Why bother explaining yourself in this thread? Makes no sense to me.

First of all, I'm not explaining myself to you or anyone in this discussion. I asked a question and I found the answer. Some people are firing at me with stupid replies so I fire back.

Second, I will indeed return the phone very soon when I'm close to an Apple store.

Third, as an extra bonus just for you, my question/thread doesn't have to make any sense to you or anyone else. This is an open forum where people can ask legitimate questions about Apple products. Don't like the question or the discussion? Perfect, ignore the thread and move on to another topic that might actually make sense to you.

That is my understanding. I don’t use AOD on my samsung phone but my wife does. It never shuts off and in the 2+ years she has had the phone, there are zero signs of burn in. Considering how susceptible OLED can be to burn in, it’s impressive tech.
