Yesterday:

I went to take shower (less than 20 mins). When I came back it was off.

I went to watch TV in my living room (an hour or so). When I came back it was off.

🤔 🤷‍♂️

See, that's what I mean. The phone(s) don't even have any sort of set pattern or time frame(s) when their "always on display" shuts down. But in your specific case, the display turned off after only 20 minutes? Really????

Apple needs to go back to the drawing board on their almighty "Always on display" and instead call it, "Randomly on or off display" instead. lol

That is my understanding. I don’t use AOD on my samsung phone but my wife does. It never shuts off and in the 2+ years she has had the phone, there are zero signs of burn in. Considering how susceptible OLED can be to burn in, it’s impressive tech.

I've been an Apple loyalist since the first iPhone. As such, I can't recall how many times I've gone in to pissing contests w/ Android users when they go on their Apple bashing rants. But in this case, this is where Apple truly sucks with their almighty flagship iPhone. Or should I say this is where Apple sucks on their advertising when it clearly isn't 100% true. Jesus, as many have already said this before. Android has been doing the always on display for how many years now? You would think Apple could get it right several years later after the competition already beat them to the game.

Nope.

What is interesting in the Apple Support document regarding AOD, one of the conditions says
  • You haven't used your iPhone for a while (your iPhone learns your activity patterns and turns the display off and on accordingly, including if you set up an alarm or sleep schedule)
Maybe the phone will eventually figure out to keep the AOD on longer if the user taps their phone to check the time at various intervals in the overnight hours. Time (literally) will tell I suppose.

They would not resell one he has already opened and used. It will go through a refurbishment process, and may be offered as a replacement for someone's faulty or damaged iPhone sometime in the future. At some point, if it makes it that far, it may also be offered for sale on Apple's online refurbished section. But the former is more likely
So it will still be available to someone that needs it. Got it 👍

For me it’s the Always Off Display. At least I’m able to disable (for me) an utterly useless feature. 😂

I’m sorry, I find it 100% ridiculous that the AOD turns off when you haven’t ‘used your phone in a while’. That defeats completely the purpose of an AOD.

Sure, turn off when flipped, or in a pocket or bag. I even understand turning off when on low power mode. But just because you haven’t used your phone in a while? Nope, not on board with that.

At the very least that needs to be a user-defined toggle setting.
SNEAKY apple called it an AOD but they didn't have the stones to do it all the way. Shameful. My AOD on my Apple Watch is a real AOD, but with the phone they didn't have the COURAGE to let that sucker glow.

Apparently it will learn your patterns.

Always-On display goes dark when you don't need it

To save battery life, the display is completely dark when:
  • Your iPhone is lying face down
  • Your iPhone is in your pocket or bag
  • Sleep Focus is on
  • Low Power Mode is on
  • Your iPhone is connected to CarPlay
  • You're using Continuity Camera
  • You haven't used your iPhone for a while (your iPhone learns your activity patterns and turns the display off and on accordingly, including if you set up an alarm or sleep schedule)
  • Your iPhone detects that you moved away from it with a paired Apple Watch (Always-On display will turn on when your Apple Watch is close to your iPhone again)

An AOD needs to be exactly that, always on. It's cool that the screen turns off if you place it face down, in pockets, etc. I have a feeling Apple will provide a software update that allows users to keep the AOD always on. They could easily dim the screen more than it currently is while this setting is on if battery life is a concern.

Can you imagine if the Apple Watch Series 5 turned its AOD off after a certain amount of time when it first launched while wearing it? it's one of the main features of the 14 Pro models and right now it's not living up to its name. It's a sometimes AOD.

I understand it’s called always on, but that’s marketing. If it was always on you’d then be complaining about battery life etc.

Good news is the OP and others can return their phones because they aren’t happy. Hopefully Apple will add more user controlled features too - I want my phone off at night while I’m sleeping but I understand others don’t. Then everyone wins.

I think there is a pattern. It detects any movement, which resets the 'timer' on whether it should be on or off. If there is nothing moving near it for x minutes it will switch off. If you are close to the device or detect movement, it will stay on.

I get it though, you may expect AOD to be exactly that.

Guess what? That's you. I didn't pay $1200 to get a phone that would let me know what time it is in the middle of the night for it not to do just that.

So while my issue might not be a big deal to you, it is to others like myself that bought the phone mainly for that one advertised feature that was clearly misadvertised from day one.

Whatever phone you decide to use, there are a number of nightstand/clock apps you can use. Sorry AOD isn't what you expected. It would be good to send Apple feedback on it though as it's a legit gripe.

Exactly. This was the only reason I upgraded from my 13 PM. Who the hell wants to tap their 14 Pro to wake it up so the time is shown when someone randomly wakes up to see the time? I've been doing that with my 13 PM for a year.

This IMO is a huge FAIL for Apple. Don't freaking advertise something that's "always on" when it really isn't.

Lol I literally prefer that. The AOD has been nice for me during the day, but I prefer my room to be pitch black when I sleep. If I need the time, I tap my screen on my phone or my watch, read the time, screen goes out in seconds and I’m able to fall asleep easier. I’m confident I’m not the only one that likes it like that.

That’s not to say apple couldn’t or shouldn’t add an option to allow it to stay on 24/7 for those who wish, but not everybody wants it on 24/7 and only want it to stay on when they are awake and near it to see information as it comes in.

So I left my phone on my bedside table. It wasn’t plugged in and was face up. Woke up and the AOD was off. I’m guessing because I had my Apple Watch on it somehow knew I was asleep and turned it off 🤷🏻‍♂️
