Oh by the way, you should also consider a UPS in cases of power outages.
APC is very recommended.

I run a SmartUPS 1400 for the Pro (should also be plenty for your machine) and a BackUPS 650 for my displays.

It's not cheap to get an APC in Australia... I would know since Ive looked a bit and haven't found any in the great price ranges you see in America, really annoying. Unless I've been looking in the wrong places or something. Perhaps some other Aussie here might shed light on it

How much do they ask for the APC devices in Australia?
I just saw that they don't make the 1400 any more, got replaced with the 1500.
Here in the UK they charge about 400 pounds, which is about A$650.

From online retailers, $609 actually, at the cheapest for a SmartUPS 1500... Then it increases onwards from $630.... into the $1000-$2000 range... which is sorta unbelievable... gotta be choosey and careful of where to shop - naturally.

But actually, in my post I was referring to the cheap refurb models (or whatever they are) one can possibly get in America... I should've mentioned that properly but I was posting from my iPod touch haha.

Thanks... will do!

And, you would know how frustrating it is to essentially be called a liar this way and that, regardless of this being on the internet and a forum.

Alright, I'll take it all back and apologize.
Instead, all I say is poseur and noob .
Happy ? :p

Do we know why the XBench scores are so low for this monster machine?

XBench is from 2006! Do need to say anything else?

I really don't understand why people still use that piece of crap software for performance tests. It's as ridiculous as measuring a computers performance by its boot time.

Well the op included it in this thread. While you may think of it as a "piece of crap" it is in the wild and is used by many people.

I find that the CPU values scale fairly well for single CPU systems and disk test values are certainly are relative.

Only because many people still use it, doesn't mean it works well. Again, the latest version is from early 2006. It was made for PPC systems and just doesn't keep up with modern hardware any more.

That might be the case for mechanical discs, for SSD's XBench is completely unreliable.

He specifically asked for suggestions on how to improve his setup.

Boy, jealousy must be a tough load!

No, I am not jealous. I am quite happy with my humble setup of 7 macs. 2 iMac G3's, my 13" MBP, my 13" 2010 MB. my 2007 13" MB, my PowerMacG5, and my "headless" MacBook. Please do not pass off my criticism/doubt as jealousy. Kthxbai.

'a liar thinks everyone else is a liar'

I really don't understand those people who are doubting the ability of the guy to buy a new 12 core Mac Pro. What's a big deal? Just because you can't afford something doesn't mean that something doesn't exist. :) Just work harder, make more money and someday buying top of the line mac pro wouldn't be something extraordinary. :)

I finally got something like this. Runs 16 copies of Mathematica at once which gives something to think about. It would probably do 24 if the license let it. Stunningly quick in parallel mode. No problems so far. **Highly recommended** strictly provided you have highly parallel apps, but I rec more RAM: 24G for me. A bigger than expected upgrade from my 2008 8-core - the combination of the Nehalem vs Harpertown architecture, 12 cores vs 8 and the double-up on multi-threading adds up to a lot more clout.

Yeah i got nothing better to do then post fake threads!
Im not gonna bother justifying the reason why i purchased this MP - no need to.

Reading some of these posts it seems people are either pissed that someone has this much power or jealous? The thread was started to ask a question not to setup a forum for debate on weather i need all this power...... Besides even if i dont, trust me when i say its NOT your money im wasting!

Whats the matter.... i thought this was the Mac site to be on. Seems like people are threatened by a NOOB with an MP.

Just my 2 cents

thanks dude

No, it's just that I'm a little curious (And other people too) about why you need such an excessive setup in my point of view. Of course, since I'm a student, I'm fine with a MacBook Pro and I rarely do any 3D-related things. Photoshop and Illustrator are the most taxing things on my CPU. :)

Lovely setup. :) Why didn't you get a wireless Apple keyboard instead though? Also, I only see 1 keyboard to three screens while 2 magic mouses + 1  trackpad... Why?

adding fuel to the fire...

i've been watching this poor guy with his 12-core get hassled for a couple days now... so i'll run interference...

here's my setup...

and soon enough even these fancy-pants mp's will be outdated and on ebay for a couple hundred bucks...

(the 6th monitor i took to my vacation pad in palm springs, i'm not so unreasonable that i cant get along for a few days with just 5)

You've made yourself happy with this purchase and in the process also made AAPL shareholders happy.

If I had untold amounts of money, that's probably the Mac Pro I'd get without the displays.

OP, sweet rig, congratulations! I gotta say that your setup blows my new iMac out of the water. But then again that's because you got the Mac Pro version and I have the iMac.

What part of Australia are you in? When I was in the US Marines, I spent some time in Darwin. Beautiful country and I hope to visit again someday.

Def getting more RAM. Thanks for the advice.
Nice setup!

I got a wireless keyboard. Going back to the full keyboard setup... keyboard too small and need full numpad. Trackpad was a gift and the 2nd wireless mouse is for the macbook air when hooked up to one of the ACDs.

Your right.... in a few months these MPs wont be that crash hot... As long as it does the job i need it to last at least 2 years!

Awesome!
Did you get hassled about your system??
