Perfect timing.. I just took a new photo to post up onto my DA account... heh

One day I'll replace that old Samsung monitor with another Dell U2311H...

Oh, the actual Mac Pro is on the floor to the right of the desk.

(For those who are curious, those wallpapers are CG images from the PS3 version of Umineko no Naku Koro ni)

Nah, I haven't.

My PS3 is downstairs with the Bravia TV, and that's fine being there (since it's good as a media player too ;)).

But I do want to hook up my PS2 at least (the black controller goes to the PS2).

The red PS3 controller there is just for playing some fighting games on Windows (in VMWare too).

Compare the cost of a V8 to a Hyundai Sonata. It'll be tens of thousands. Tens of thousands is tens of thousands, whether you blow it on a better car, a better house, a better computer, or Star Wars figurines.

The question is, which gives you the best bang for your buck?

I'd go with the computer - more hours spent than the car, and important for my job. But I wouldn't call someone a douchbag just because they blew it on a car instead.

Well, I might, but not on a car forum.

Hey man, congrats on the 12 Core setup you have. It looks awesome. So funny and at the same time, sad, o read all the jealous comments here though.

Good luck with the set up!

Gday!

I recently bought my first Mac Pro. I guess i should point out that i am pretty much a Mac noob. This machine was built based on friends suggestions and this very useful forum. The specs are:

- 2 2.93Ghz 6 core Intel Xeon Westmere (12 cores)
- 12 GB DDR3 ECC SDRAM memory
- 2 512 GB SSD and a 2 TB 7200 rpm Serial ATA 3GB/s Hard drive
- 2 ATI Radeon HD 5770
- 2 18 x optical drives (wanting a blu ray drive soon)
- 3 ACD 27 inch displays
- 2 TB Time machine

The machine is super-quick!

Just wondering what you guys think about the setup i.e. anything missed? anything anyone else would add differently? Pretty big investment so i want to try and keep this machine for a little while.

I think the only thing slowing this machine down is the damn internet speeds in Australia... the current internet speed is at 8mps.

Anyhow would really appreciate comments on any potential additions. I will take pics and post soon as well.

Hiya mate, lol at the haters on here, sad people! I'm not jealous of all that power as I would NEVER use it but I'm jealous of all that hardware!! yum...

Anyway, only thing I can think of is an Apple Raid card? Put the SSD's in raid 0 if you have enough space? And I would also keep an eye on the backups, maybe get a second backup device? Or store some stuff in the cloud? Maybe some more mRAM for the virtual machines? 24gb.

Awesome machine anyhow, thanks for sharing it on here.

No, not an Apple Raid card. There's enough threads here though explaining why and what other better alternatives there are :)

FCP is 32bit and limited to 3GB, one of the major problems with FCP. It runs out of memory all the time on my system, even though I have 32GB. CS5 64bit does not have any of these limitations and can use all the memory you throw at it.

Another problem with FCP is it never utilises more then 30% of the CPU power so it is a really poor reference for the new Mac Pro's. FCP runs great on a MBP with 2GB, so it doesn't really tell you much.

The thing that makes me wonder is: can you actually make Parallels use one video card and the mac use the other? I got 4 screens but only one Quadro 4000 and hate to waste a screen on Windows to be honest. But if it works, would be cool.

It depends if the OP is going to end up using all the threads at the same time - I mean I only have 3GB on my 4-core currently (8-threads) and I only plan on going to 6GB - I do video editing in Final Cut Pro, Graphics in Motion and then Compress using Compressor, and apart from Motion occasionally hitting a memory barrier, 3GB is workable.

To all the haters: got two HP 30 inch, a del 24 supersharp and a Samsung 27inch connected through HDMI to check video signals. Don't be shocked by pro's actually using pro setups kiddies, it is still cheaper then most cars. ever got into a cab and told the cabby he is a liar because you never use 5 seats so why should he have them?

Nope, doesn't work that way. Every VM will get an emulated graphics card. You can not assign a physical card to a VM.

Just priced out that system .... about $12,000 to $13,000 .... did you pay cash??? I hope you are self employed and can claim it as a business expense. My wife would divorce me if I dropped that amount of money on a computer...

Don't get me wrong, I am not a hater, more power to you ... I make a lot of money ($$$) but have different priorities ... like sending my kids to college, retiring ... eating ... paying my mortgage .... :)

It's a sweet system though!!!

15 years ago an Avid was $100,000. If you need the tool, you need the tool.

No one really needs a computer that powerful, and three ACDs?! that's ridiculous. Either you're lying or wasting thousands. Just my $.02.

It truly disgusts me to see people react this way to someone just because they have a decent system. For goodness sake what is next? "640 KB of ram should be enough for anything, no one needs more". If people in the computer industry had your mentality we still would be using cassette tapes as storage. Congrats to Akayz for his new system.

I saw that too. $12,500 is truly not THAT  expensive... even if you add 10% sales tax, it is still less than 15K, which is not bad if the job you have relies on this machine. Someone mentioned how you can easily save this amount between two cars...

Advice: Not sure if you are backing up with Time Machine or also cloning with CCC or SuperDuper! If you job relies on this computer I would do better back-ups than just Time Machine via Time Capsule

I'm jealous :D Would love to have 3 ACDs myself... even just 1 :p Will hopefully get one soon.

And $15,000 is not that much if your business is dependent on/revolves around the mac. Other small businesses give out the same (prob more) for the equipment they need to do their job.

While this setup is pretty sick (and something I dream of owning) you guys should see some of the CAD workstations we have at my company if you doubt the need for such expensive hardware. They're all HP workstations varying from Z400s to Z800s and the Z800s are loaded. We have a couple guys with 3 30" monitors. Just the tower runs $13-15k.

And since we work next door to Tesla Motors' Los Angeles design office one of our IT guys used to work part time there and their setups are even higher end than ours.

Anyways congrats on the MP. Love that hardware.

Akayz,

Congrats on your setup. What apps do you run? Here's a few pics from my most recent setup... but my favorite most treasured computer was my Tandy 1000HX, 256K, 300 bit baud modem circa 1986:

That looks awesome!!
Just a question i see that you MP is to the right of your ACDs... how did the cables reach that far? did you use extension cables of some sort? I cant believe how short Apple has made the ACD cables!

The 12 core looks awesome out of the MP!!!
