Hi,
I've been trying to use MakeMKV to make an MKV of the Blu Ray movie and then put it into Handbrake to make a version for my Apple TV. The MKV is made just fine and play really well but when I try to put it into Handbrake it just says 'No Valid Source Found'. The MKV plays fine and I can't think of why this doesn't work! If anyone knows how to get this to work I would be very appreciative.

Thanks,
King Mook Mook

What version of Handbrake are you using? I believe for HD level video files you need the snapshot version of Handbrake, not the version on the download page. I can't recall the snapshot version number off hand, but if you google it, you'll find it.

Grab the developer snapshot, available in the Handbrake forums. Just be sure to read the page before downloading so you know what you are getting yourself into.

For the Apple TV, it's even easier.

1. Click on the Apple TV Preset in Handbrake.
2. Change picture size to 1280 by xxx.
3. Set the Framerate to 24 fps.

Click on the Audio tab. If the Source is DTS 5.1, then your Track 1 should be AAC. If so, disable Track 2. If it's Dolby Digital 5.1, Track 1 should be AAC, Track 2 should be AC3 Passthru. Let 'er transcode.

Was following this thread for a while and took the plunge today, so sorry for the resurrection. The .mkv file plays fine in VLC, but when I run it through HB with the above settings and put it in iTunes, the playback is really choppy (audio cuts in and out every half second or so...sounds like helicopter blades thumping almost).

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Does it play fine on your Apple TV? You have it updated to 2.x, correct?

What is your computer's specifications (i.e., model, cpu and RAM)?

I haven't even tried it on ATV since I can't get it to work in iTunes. I've got a late model '08 MBP with 4 gig in it. (2.4 processor if I remember). I'd think that should handle it, no? I'll try it when I get home (at work). My ATV's are current on firmware.

Are you using the current snapshot of Handbrake that was released a couple of weeks ago? Also, you're converting the MKV to an m4v with Handbrake, right? You have the same MBP that I do and my videos using these settings play fine with it with both Plex and Quicktime under Snow Leopard.

Must be DTS or HD audio

I have this problem from time to time with a MKV file. Always it is because MakeMKV ignores DTS and DTS-HD but at the same time does not rip the AC3 correctly or something. I believe an invalid version of DTS audio is still in the MakeMKV file. In every case I have had to rip using AnyDVD HD and then downconvert to AC3 using tsmuxer..... All on Windows unfortunately. :(

I have even used tsmuxer to take the MakeMKV file and demux? it to a Blu-Ray. Then I immediately re-used tsmuxer to downconvert the DTS to AC3 and then put into HB. All worked well then.

I have not found any other way to do it. But hopefully there is another way.

Don't want to mess up with word choices-- I may be using "transcode" incorrectly but on PC, tsmuxer will downcovert (that's the word used in the tsmuxer application) DTS to AC3.

[Edit] And I am using the HB sv2845 on Mac. Tsmuxer 1.10.6 on PC.

Sounds fine to me. I was trying to help the poster who said HB does not read his MKV file. I think it is because it has a DTS or DTS-HD stream on it. And the way I resolved is as I posted.

Has anyone tried the new version of MakeMKV? (1.48) Supposedly it is able to rip Blu-Ray+ discs now. Can anyone confirm this?

It is in its infancy. There are only a limited number of titles that it supports: http://makemkv.com/svq/

I've begun to submit the dump files for BD+ discs that makeMKV does not support in hopes of them expanding its functionality at a much quicker rate. I encourage everyone else to do the same who has BD+ discs available. It takes only a few seconds to scan, dump the information file, and then email them per the instructions on the page.

Quick edit: Mike from MakeMKV has confirmed that they will be updating the SVQ file daily (unless no dump files were submitted the day before). Great news and hopefully the list of BD+ support discs will grow as more people submit their dump files.

Thank you so much. I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I didn't realize I needed to be using the snapshot. I'm new to HB and didn't realize what a "snapshot" even was. I got it downloaded and everything works perfectly. I appreciate you taking the time to help me out with such a simple mistake.

Not bad.. MakeMKV is getting pretty close to being able to replace AnyDVD-HD. I have been using it for all my DVD and BD ripping over the last 1.5 months, and am yet to run into a disk the program can't handle. Will be happy to become a paid customer, once they go into full release mode.

Bd+

so glad BD+ is getting underway in MakeMKV. I def will email my BD+ info to the MakeMKV developer.

I like MakeMKV a lot but there are two improvements I want:

1. DTS support. Right now any DTS tracks are ignored by MakeMKV or messed up in some way. Examples: Green Lantern (2009) and X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
2. Expand BD+ support. Examples: X-Men Origins: Wolverine. But that's the only one.

Really nice, clean program. Definitely give it thumbs up. Much faster than AnyDVD HD also.

That's not true at all =P Last SVQ update that I downloaded (a few days ago) was up to 50 or so titles. Again, those SVQ files are updated daily presuming people submit their dump files for BD+ discs that aren't already in there. If you have BD+ discs, submit those dumpfiles and odds are the next day you'll be able to rip them with the updated file.

No need to go back and forth but I believe it's true based on your own words: "...was up to 50 or so titles...". which means the entire library of BD+ discs is NOT *yet* supported.

Now we should all send dumps so it can be more supported but given MakeMKV's approach it seems users will have to continually update the database and download updates versus total AACS (IIRC) support without any updates or users sending dumps.

MakeMKV is my new favourite Mac tool. Previously I've had to boot to Windows to watch BluRay. Now I'm able to get at the content without booting to the 'other' OS.

I've seen other people have problems with DTS. You can use Mkvtoolnix to pull the DTS out of the MKV, then I loaded that into audacity, adjusted the pan & gain and exported to AAC using the ffmpeg plugins for Audacity. Then I used Subler (another amazing tool) to replace the faulty soundtrack that Turbo.264 HD had put into it in under a minute.

The result is perfection on my iPhone. The same could be done to replace the soundtrack in a 720p conversion.

One other item I'm watching is the XBMC support being coded at the moment for Broadcom's Crystal HD (BD Video decoder) card. That would enable the apple tv (or mac mini with appropriate compiled driver for SL rather than Tiger) to playback the original 1080p full bitrate mkv... now, if we could merge makemkv and xbmc, then we'd be able to watch BluRay straight off the disc in real time (with hardware support).

That's my holy grail right now.
