[EDIT] Read your post in its entirety and see that you offered solutions. I checked out Mkvtoolnix and it is Windows based so I will probably stick with tsmuxer since it does what I need.

Hi Fave>> Maybe you can help. When I run a Blu-Ray with a DTS stream through MakeMKV-- MakeMKV says it is ignoring the DTS tracks and it then extracts only the AC3 stream (or so it says).

But then in Handbrake...
When I run that extract through HB, HB on one of the latest SVNs says none of the audio streams were recognized-- as if the DTS stream was extracted but not extracted correctly. And it affected the AC3 stream also.

But your post...
Says some have pulled out the DTS stream after the MakeMKV extract? Do you or anyone know how MakeMKV handles Blu-rays with DTS streams? Does it ignore them? or try to extract them -- with varying levels of success?

If yes to #2 then what are some of the tools used to pull out or use the DTS stream?

I essentially have to use AnyDVD HD to extract; Then tsmuxer to downconvert the DTS to AC3; Then I either use MakeMKV on that extract -- creating a MKV or I can use HB directly at that point. I may prefer MakeMKV to get the chapter marks.

Are you sure? I'm pretty sure that for TrueHD it says extracting core AC3 and for DTS HDMA it says extracting core DTS (DTS HDHR is copied in its entirety and my plain DTS receiver seems to handle the 1.4Mbit stream ok - unless core can go up to that bitrate?)

I had no problems extracting both DD and DTS HDHR from Stargate - plex played the mkv without modification using the DTS soundtrack via my external DTS decoder (optical).

the DD was happily transcoded to AAC stereo by T264HD (perian installed)

Actually the Nix is short for unix, and there's dmgs (For OSX if that's not implicit) linked from here
the interesting tools are in the content/macos of the .app and are cli based.

TSMuxerGUI crashes for me in SL and I havent grasped the meta format yet. If you have an example it'd be appreciated.

Thanks

Yes -- think I am going crazy-- mkvtoolnix does come in OS X. Really funny thing is I already had it loaded on my computer and used it once before to extract subtitles--- and completely forgot. Getting old :(

My understanding is there is no SL version of TSMuxer .... yet. I VM into Vista and use the PC version. Sometimes that hangs though -- around 60% complete.

Perhaps it's just DTS HD

Maybe I am crazy-- perhaps DTS now works in the latest build *or* it always worked and I am just crazier...

But I am certain DTS HD is not working. See output here:

Only extracting DTS core audio from stream #1 of type 'DTS-HD Master audio' in file 00074.m2ts
Stream #12 of type 'DTS-HD secondary audio' in file 00074.m2ts was skipped
Stream #13 of type 'DTS-HD secondary audio' in file 00074.m2ts was skipped
Stream #14 of type 'DTS-HD secondary audio' in file 00074.m2ts was skipped

For X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Remember there's a big difference between DTS HDHR and DTS HDMA, one is a higher bitrate lossy format, the other is lossless. It definitely only extracts core from HDMA (like Wolverine above), but I'll have to re-scan Stargate and see what it says about HDHR.

Suppose you could get the whole EAC3/DTSHD How would you get them out to a receiver anyway? SPDIF is not sufficient and I don't think any of the macs support HDMI Audio? I guess if you've a Mac Pro and you've bolted on a 7.1ch 24bit sound card, then it might be useful to have them uncompressed to PCM?

Without Nero (or equivalent codecs) and EAC3TO on the mac, we're unable to decompress them anyway. I'd love a tool like EAC3TO for the mac, with full HD codec support.

What it does well is extract the AC3 and DTS cores from EAC3 and DTSHD which can be passed through to a receiver via optical out or decoded with the appropriate codecs.

I guess if you need more, you can use AnyDVD HD and EAC3TO in Windows. If you're compressing the sound again though it's probably not worth the effort of recovering the full PCM just to drop most of it again.

May be I am stuck. Not sure from your post above but I planned to use the MacPro for video storage and other needs. I may watch movies on the MacPro from time to time but mostly I would stream to a Mac Mini in my bedroom and have that output (via SPDIF) to my receiver to the TV and speakers.

I thought the HD (uncompressed) audio would go through the SDPIF out to the receiver in and the receiver would decode. Is this not possible? Do I need a soundcard on soundcard to output uncompressed audio?

I am bit confused.

Jumpy video and audio question?

So far I have transferred 6 of my blu-ray disc using MakeMKV v1.4.8 on my 3.0ghz 8 Core Mac Pro running snow leopard. I am using Plex to play back the mkv files. All have converted fine except for "Battle for Terra". For some reason when I play that movie back the image gets jumpy when ever the camera pans. Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this?

Also, this movie has LPCM 5.1 and DD5.1 audio stream. The first time I copied this movie I left both checked and when I played it back on my computer I heard a hissing sound. The next time I unchecked the LPCM and the audio played back fine. I know that right now you can not play back uncompressed audio on a mac, but in the future we may be able to. So how would you go about being able to make a copy of movies that contain all audio formats?
Also,
Thanks,
Steve

Right now I am doing both: Using MakeMKV and watching on Plex. And using AnyDVD HD on VM to copy the BD in its entirety.

Until I run out of disk space I will do this - hoping a final answer on compressed/uncompressed comes before my disk space runs out :).

It may not matter, IMHO Blu-ray as a format is super bloated so perhaps HD audio is no different than DTS or AC3. Perhaps. I am certain those 40-50 GB BD could be made with 20-25 GB.

LG GGC-H20L not showing up in Windows?

I recently installed the LG GGC-H20L blu-ray the first optical bay of my 8 Core Mac Pro. It's been working fine under Mac OS but when I try to use it under Windows Vista Business 64bit I can't get the eject button on the keyboard to open up the draw?

Thanks,
Steve

Do you guys know if it violates the warranty to swap out disc drives in a Macbook Pro? I'm just wondering cause I might want to do that when Blu-Ray drives become available for Macbook Pros.

I have the same drive on a Mac Pro but it is in the second bay and I only use VM for Vista. Sometimes the two O/S get mixed up with who has control of the drive and neither of them can open the drive. I usually just restart the machine in that case but that is not the issue you are facing it seems.

Have you loaded the PowerDVD and other software that came with the drive in Windows? Perhaps there is a driver that needs to be installed to operate / recognize the drive.

Sorry I cannot be of more help.

esata

I didn't install any software for the H20L. I bought the drive used so I didn't get any software, but I saw that there was a Vista firmware update on the LG site.

How did you connect your drive? I connected mine to one of the extra sata ports, so I was wondering if maybe Windows doesn't recognize that port? I know that it doesn't recognize the analog audio output on the back of my computer.

I installed in the 2nd bay and also did not install any software. But I am using VM Fusion versus Boot Camp. Via VM Fusion it is using Apple's drivers or logic to access the drives and it works well (no issues-- except from time to time neither Vista via VM Fusion nor OS X can recognize the drive). This is because Vista took control of it but then MakeMKV or some other OS X process tried to control it and both want full control so neither of them access the drive.

But this is rare and fairly reproducible. And is "fixed" by restarting. I actually can access both drives (the standard DVD and the Blu-Ray via Vista).

vmware fusion

So I downloaded a trial version of vmware fusion and a trial copy of anydvd hd. I installed anydvd while in windows then wet back into mac os and started vmware fusion. I was able to get my bootcamp windows partition to run under fusion, started anydvd, but now how to I make a copy of my blu-ray disc? Do I need to use some other software to copy the blu-ray disc? I downloaded and installed eac3to, but I can not figure out how to use it or if I even need to use it if all I want to do is make a .mkv file?

The only reason I am not just using Makemkv is that for some reason "Battle for Terra" plays back jerky when I try to play it back. I have not had this issue with any other .mkv file so I am pretty sure that it is not Plex that s causing the issue.

I did Battle for Terra a while back. I'm not sure which verson of Windows you're using, or what the restrictions are for the trial versions are, but if you Right-click on the AnyDVDHD taskbar icon, select "Copy disc to Hard Drive…". A pop-up window should open, then Select the Disc and destination folder. You can set up shared folders in VMware that you can use to copy the disc outside of the virtual machine. You can then use MakeMKV on the unencrypted folder or use tsMuxeR to create an m2ts file to send to HandBrake to create your MKV file.

yes just as mac.jedi said.

In the taskbar there should be a little fox--- that is AnyDVD and you can follow the steps mac.jedi laid out.

Hope it all works for you.

Lossless audio

So does anydvd copy the lossless audio from Battle for Terra? I was finally able to get anydvd to make a copy but when I compared the files to what was on the blu-ray disc, my copy did not have the folder labled AACS, and I was not sure if that was the lossless audio track? I would like to some how be able to save the LPMC track even though I know that makemkv will not convert it.

Thanks,
Steve

AnyDVD copies the entire contents of the disc, minus encryption. So, yes all the original audio tracks are included.

Yes. I thought the AACS folder was the folder with the copy protection information so that would not be copied.

You can use tsmuxer or even MakeMKV to confirm the lossless audio is there--- in tsmuxer it will show the lossless audio as a track.

On MakeMKV if you load the folder (index file) that AnyDVD created you will see in the comments that MakeMKV says ".... audio track ignored..." or something of that nature. That tells you the lossless audio is there-- just won't be copied by MakeMKV.

Ive been following this thread for a while as Im about to pick up the 27" iMac i7 next month. I thought I read somewhere else that your cant rip within the Virtual Machine, is that not correct???

So jedi, all I have to do is get a valid copy of AnyDVD HD (already have the standard version) and run that in my Virtual Machine, plug in my external BD drive and use AnyDVD HD to make an ISO of it? Then copy that ISO to my shared folders, open MakeMKV in OS X and convert to an m2ts file. Then open handbrake and rip it to my desired format? Sounds like a lot of work!! But worth it if it works!

I also think I read that Parallels doesnt support BD at this time. Does that mean for playback or even just the external drive. I run Win 7 in parallels, just want to make sure in case I need to get VMware.

Great thread by the way!

I use Fusion (now 3.0) to access my external LG Bluray drive using AnyDVD HD. I've had zero problems with this since I started.

If it helps I consistently use VMWare Fusion 2.0 / Vista (32 & 64 bit) to rip using AnyDVD and also use tsmuxer. Although I will say tsmuxer hangs a lot in VMWare. Not sure this is due to VMWare or other reasons though.

Not sure why a drive would not appear in a virtual environment but when I installed Vista I selected use the Mac drivers for drives.

Hi iMerlin,

Personally, I've only used VMware and I highly recommend it. Also, I noticed a couple of things in your post that you might not be aware of:

First, you don't need to make an ISO image. Using the "Rip Video DVD to Hard Disk…" option in the AnyDVDHD taskbar icon's contextual menu, will copy the disc's structure as a "folder" to your shared folder.

Second, MakeMKV will only output MKV containers, not m2ts. The good news here is that HandBrake will accept MKV files and will even recognize and add the chapter data … M2ts files used as input to HandBrake will not include chapters. If you prefer m2ts and you're on Mac OS 10.5.x, you can use tsMuxeR to create a m2ts file. No tsMuxer on 10.6.x yet.

Once you get it goin' manually, you can check out my automation thread if you find you want to start automating it a bit: How-To: Automating DVD & Blu-Ray (Backup, Encoding & Tagging) for Mac OS X 10.6

Thanks, mac.jedi
