i believe it needs to be a directly mouted BD, though im not sure

toast titanium can mount images to trick the computer into thinking its an actual optical drive, maybe try that?

Has anyone tried this with Toast? I am using my PS3 to make ISO's of Blurays and I've had to use Windows to get my mkv and MakeMKV won't work in Windows without AnyDVD (though it tells me to turn off AnyDVD, it won't work without it.) I'd like to stop messing with Windows for this step. I would buy it if I could try it first, but I don't see a trial download.

Thanks.

Hey there. I am currently doing the procedure you just outlined. except I need to add an extra step because I copy the files from the ps3 and then create an image which is then mounted into parallels. From there I use anydvd to create the iso, then I open it with makemkv. I could probably open and convert the m2ts files with handbrake, but I want to have mkvs to stream back though the ps3.

I will give mounting the toast files a try for you when I get home a bit later on :)

P.s. I hope you are using PS3 media server to stream movies to your ps3 for playback ;) I have started a thread on these forums for further information if you wish.

Can you make the ISO "mount" into a file directory --- e.g., with the BMDV file folder? If so MakeMKV on the Mac (and I am sure on the PC) can read the info files and create a MKV file.

Hope this helps.

From the online help section of MakeMKV-- "Open a disc. On a first screen program will show all available optical drives. At that point you can open a disc or file on a hard drive. " You would select the folder icon to do this.

Thanks! I'd appreciate it. I don't understand what you mean by an extra step? I just follow the PS3 Bluray guide here. If Toast will mount the iso and let MakeMKV see the iso and open it without something like AnyDVD running, I can skip going into Windows. It's a bummer that Roxio doesn't do trials.

I've thought about trying my PS3 for streaming media. So far I have been encoding them down to 720p and playing them on my AppleTV. The longer they go without updating the ATV though, the more I look into alternatives, including using the PS3. It just seems like the UI is lacking for navigating collections, but I'll check it out eventually. To busy most of the time and I need something that "just works."

I tried several ways just now and while I was able to try to open it, every way (ISO files, Bluray files, all video files) every thing I selected gave me the following:

MakeMKV v1.4.11 beta darwin(x86-release) started

The volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted
Failed to open disc

Trying to do the same file through Windows MakeMKV without AnyDVD running, I get:

Don't know what I'm missing to use MakeMKV without AnyDVD running, despite MakeMKV telling me it doesn't need AnyDVD running.

i think the app words it wrong. by "running" i think it refers to "you have used the program previously on this file/disc image". weird i know...

currently i use both anydvd hd AND makemkv.

1. copy files from ps3 to mac via linux (using secure ftp).
2. use disk utility to create disk image from ps3.
3. mount .dmg into parallels.
4. use anydvd to create .iso
5. use makemkv to create mkv - when i open the .iso with makemkv i do get the error message about anydvd running. but it still works fine!

Has anyone here had problems with quicktime not being able to play the .m4v files after running the .mkv through handbrake? It has happened to a couple of my Blu-Rays .m4v after Handbrake said the re encoding was successful.

Looks like it now supports all drives, regardless of burning ability, and now has UPnP streaming mode (Plex anyone?). It might also allow backups of discs with encryption removed. Someone needs to try this out.
ohhhh how awsome!! this is all very exciting, do u know if it can rip from an encrypted disk image? probs not yet :(

have you ticked the "large file size" setting in handbrake?

Great...a few days after taking delivery of my new external burner---oh well, my typical luck.

I've only tried to rip one movie with the new version, but the mkv output file was not acceptable to Handbrake. I need to try again, but has anyone else tried and failed like this?

external bluray sleep issues

Hello, I have a 27" imac w/ and external bluray drive in fw800 case. The bluray drive is keeping my imac from sleeping. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a fix? The only way I can get the computer to sleep is to manually put the imac to sleep or by remembering to turn off the bluray drive. It is kinda a pain.

Thanks for your help.

I just got an external BLURAY last night but i didn't notice if it kept the computer from sleeping, I'll keep an eye on it tonight and see.
My external is quite easy to remember to turn off tho, it sits right beside my imac and the fan they put in the thing is almost like a small hand vac, so it's quite annoying... this has got to go.

I've now ripped (or tried) half a dozen movies with the version. 2 have yielded files that cannot be read by Handbrake - Sin City and Jerry MacGuire. That's a much higher failure rate that I got with the previous version.

I'm concerned now that I'm on the clock before having to buy this application, and it's getting less functional. Hoping the folks at MakeMKV get this sorted out.

Im having the same issues. Ive ripped Adventureland and Open Season 2 over the weekend, neither of which would load into HB. Kept telling me No Valid Source Found.

Im wondering if buying the app will somehow correct this.

makvmkv doesn't need anydvd. In fact it tells you to turn it off.

The other problem with makemkv is when you rip a movie that has forced subs it saves them as pgs files which almost no player can read. In windows it's usually better to rip with eac3to which will give you a sup file for forced subs and you can process that with bdsup2sub to get a usuable file to merge in the mkv.

Also with eac3to you can rip the DTS-MA HD or TrueHD audio tracks to FLAC so even if you don't have a video/audio card capable of bitstreaming HD audio you can still get 100% of that audio as LPCM with FLAC.

I purchased a key last weekend, as my beta version was shut down. The first rip thereafter was "The Waterboy", and it wouldn't load into HB. I've ripped a bunch of other stuff since, and Waterboy is the only failure. Maybe the purchased version is also a movie snob...

FWIW, I tried re-ripping Waterboy, and got the same result.

Since I purchased MakeMKV, EVERYTHING I've tried has worked without any problems. Although, I havent gone back and tried to redo Adventureland. It wasnt worth wasting another Netflix delivery on anyway! :D
I will however, throw Waterboy in the Queue and give it a go. Ill let you know if I have the same results.

I was going to ask the same question, and now I see it, it seems so obvious. Would it make a difference if I left this option ticked all the time? Even with file that end up being 1.5gb?

i cant see it making any difference, really. ive never actually looked into how that setting works - but i always presumed it was some differing meta data info. i probably am wrong though ;)

i always tick it, even if the files will be under 1.5GB.

If it always works for you that is good enough for me. Thanks.

what device will you be playing the movies back on? it has worked fine for me for a 5G video, 5.5G video, 5G ipod nano, iPads and a range of iPhones - it shouldnt be an issue for you :)

goodluck!

New Apple TV, possibly my iPhone 4.
