RE: Setup

I originally had problems setting up airport to work... make sure that you have no other devices either virtual or actual above the airport icon... I recommend setting up a complete separate profile for the iphone and sharing and only have the airport and bluetooth if you need that..

First off,you need to download Proxifier from proxifier.com

Here ya go:

1) Setup a new network on windows(call it netshare)

a. To do this you need to go into your network connections and right click on your wireless connection. Then click the wireless networks tab. Click add. Name your network whatever. I call mine "netshare." Set net authentication to open and data encryption to disabled. click the box on the bottom that says "this is a computer to computer ad-hoc network"

2) Connect to the ad-hoc network by disconnecting all other connections.

3) Go to the wifi networks on your iphone and select netshare. Set the IP address to 192.168.10.1 and the subnet to 255.255.255.0. Use Static

4) Go to the TCP/IP settings and set your computer's IP.
a. To do this you need to right click on your wireless connection and click properties.
b. left click on Internet Protocol TCP/IP and select properties.
c. select the use the following ip address box
d. set your ip to 192.168.10.2
e. set your subnet to 255.255.255.0
f. select ok

5) Run the proxifier program

6) click the proxy settings button on the tool bar

7) Click Add then enter 192.168.10.1 in the address and set the port to 1080. select Socks ver 5 and click ok

8) Open netshare on your iphone

9) test your connection using the proxy checker

10) Netshare should show your connections at 1 and the data rates

11) Open your browser and you should have internet access through your phone.

ENJOY!

I notice after a reboot (without turning off the iPhone) that when I connect back to the wifi signal it takes time before Safari starts working, not sure how long, perhaps up to a minute or so, so if you guys are expecting a sudden connection you may be mistaken. give it time.

Like I said before Safari sucked with Mac mail (MobileMe) till I downloaded and used Omniweb. It may be a fluke but all I know is this thing is getting Hotmail, Mac mail, you name it and the screens look fine.

Also in Netshare on my iPhone the "Connections:" is still reading 0
and both In: and Out: are reading 0 KB/sec and I am still surfing fine.

Um, I'm not sure but that sounds to me like you're not actually surfing with the iPhone's connection. Otherwise those numbers would certainly be greater than 0.

Maybe you're still connected to your regular wi-fi and you just don't realize it, LOL

Fails the last step

Everything went fine until Step Eight. The mac sys it is connected, but NetShare shows an IP of 169.254.98.189 instead of the expected 192.168.10.1.

If I go into the WiFi Settings "iPhone Tether " is lsted and shown "connected (checkmark and lots of bars) but the IP address as reverted to DHCP and the IP address is listed as 169.254.98.189.

Any ideas?

Absolutely no way, however it now shows
Connections: 2

No; it changed back to 0

In and Out are still 0

Trust me; there is NO other Wifi source except the iPhone tether.

Only thing I don't like is I could tether both MBP and Powerbook at the same time with Jailbreak tether mod; can't seem to do it with Netshare.

Neptune make sure you used the "Static" mode to set your IP address on your iPhone.
Netshare must show Proxy IP as described and not an auto setting.

after two hours fiddling with it, i'm about to call it a night...

i followed the original poster's instructions to the 'T', and entered the SOCKS Proxy Server in Network settings as

192.168.10.1:1080

both of which show up on my iphone. i even tried the trick someone else mentioned earlier, which was to turn the wi-fi off and back on again, but no joy yet.

maybe i'll see if i can get help directly from nullriver.

p.s. by the way, what are O2's 'fair use' internet usage policies? i'm from the states, and am unfamiliar with it.

Just set it to Static and assign the IP manually, 192.168.10.1 for example. It will save it.

So I'm going to need an Airport card to use this, right?

Any way to set this up using a router?

My home address is technically a business, so my home Internet connection prices would be through the roof. Cheapest I can find is $55/mo for low level DSL, plus the $149 set-up fees. If I could use this for the limited amount of internetting I do from home, I'd be a happy happy guy.

this is getting frustrating, I tried the instructions in the netshare app and by mac-addict to no avail, tried the "keep 3g active" trick, changed settings in firefox... And all it says after thinking for a few minutes is "network timed out"
Help please?

I'm using 0S X 10.4.11 and I can't get NetShare to work

I've followed the instructions (and adapted for OS 10.4). Every seems right, but it still doesn't work. Any ideas why?

I've got 10.4.11 and my 'Network' does not look like the posters network. Anyone share how to do these steps with my version?

Cannot seem to get this to work with Camino, or get all applications to work via proxifier.

anyone got any ideas??

Y
I just downloaded it and set it up. It works fine with Safari but have had no luck with Firefox and Mac Mail.

Aaron

Safari and AIM work great, but Firefox 3 is not working even after setting up the proxy info within firefox. I guess in emergencies I'll use safari!

I've read this, not sure if it will help, just passing it along:

set "network.proxy.socks_remote_dns" to true (in about:config)

With regards to Box Office being pulled:

He's changing the name of the application, so I suspect that is the reason.

I'm wondering if some of the sites that these applications are culling their information from are starting to whine? The BoxOffice application is one of my favorites - however, it grabs data and graphics from Rotten Tomatoes, Fandango, Yahoo, and What's Showing. I can't help but think that one of these sites complained...

No, that's not it.

I've spoken to the developer and he said he doesn't know why Apple pulled it, it's not due to that reason, as he has clearance from the data sources. Apple hasn't told him why though, and he hasn't been able to find out yet. He's working on it.

i dont get it... last night i tried to download it just after the news broke on this site and engadget and it had already been removed. figured i'd give it a try today and its back in the store and working  got it working in about 10 minutes, works great but edge it pretty slow of course, gonna try it out on the girlfriend's 3g. awesome app but i'm still confused whether or not its here to stay.

yep almost 24 hours of every-so-often fiddling with it.. still does not work

iv watched 3 step by step videos, iv read 3 step by step instructions!

anyone willing to screen cast sometime? or maybe talk me through it.. this sucks, it would be SO useful to.

I got that Proxy IP: being blank
And it would not work after just comming back from some paddle ball.
I put a Subnet Mask of 255.255.255.0 into my static iPhone slot after noticing it was in my airport System prefs. Suddenly it started working again.

I dunno, seems more twitchy than the jailbreak but I can't definitely say yet.

Fortunately I have both Jailbreak and Netshare so I'll try to keep researching and keep you all updated.

So yeah, try that Subnet Mask thingy and see how it goes.
But remember I am in Tiger 10.4.11

Looking now I see Connections: 5
It keeps changing. Now its 3. Wonder what that Netshare thingy indicates?
Now it is zero.

Took me 30 mins to finally get it to work.

I followed the first post's instructions exactly and it didn't work. However, I have Parallels Desktop and VMWare installed, and so virtual ethernet ports appeared under Network settings on my Mac. So what I did was that I followed the optional Step 2.5 and created a location profile, and then removed all network cards on the left pane except for the Airport (such that the network settings pane looked exactly like the picture), and everything started working.

I get 904kbps download and 287kbps upload.

Sorry, I am new at this.
The In: and Out: and Connections:
will show various numbers when I am actually going from one web page to another or downloading something. But if I do nothing for awhile everything usually settles to zero.

Firefox definitely sucks at this but Omniweb works well.

help

could someone please be awesome and make a video?
I'm running a MBP with leopard.
followed the 1st posts' directions exactly, even tried the turn off wifi, make sure 3g working, then turn it back on trick
tried entering the 255.255... subnet
the netshare app shows the 192.168.10.1 and 1080
but no connections or data flow
i'm sure im speaking for a lot of people that aren't as proficient in this like me when i say, please help.

Ok, I followed the instructions, I normally use the Camino browser after I set everything up per the instructions nothing would come up on Camino.

I switched to Safari and it did work to an extent, every once in awhile clicking on some websites, I get the following message:

Did I set it up wrong?? any help would greatly be appreciated! Thanks!

That is the *exact* same error that I get. I've done the same steps for 3 hours and tried little variations and get the same error : NSURLErrorDomain:-1015

Wildly frustrating thinking I may have wasted 10 bucks :(
