Safari and AIM work great, but Firefox 3 is not working even after setting up the proxy info within firefox. I guess in emergencies I'll use safari!

OK, got it working nicely.

Well, I say nicely. I only have GPRS reception here, so 29kbps downloads...

Looking forward to using it better in 3G areas!!

Andy

That's funny, I just did a video demonstration of this on my MacBook. It works great and is actually pretty fast. I've heard that some people have been either been fined or have received letters from AT&T stating that their data plan has been dropped due to high usage. It's funny how unlimited data really doesn't mean unlimited. I really don't see how a few hundred people using their iPhones to tether their laptops will bring down AT&T's data servers and cause a lot of havoc for AT&T

Thanks. This video suggests that the iPhone needs to be jailbroken in order for NetShare to work properly. Is that correct? I haven't jailbroken mine and I cannot get this to work even after following the detailed instructions posted. In NetShare, 'Connections' always shows '0'.

Sometimes I can't get my laptop to tether to the iPhone, so I use this trick to "wake up" the iPhones AT&T data connection. Do the following if you've followed the first post's directions to a T and you still can't connect:

1. Go to the wifi settings on the iPhone and shut it completely off
2. open MobileSafari (or just wait) to get the iPhone to start using the data connection (3G or Edge), make sure you see the little "E" or "3G" symbol on the phone, NOT the wifi broadcast icon
3. *now* go back to the iPhone's wifi settings, turn it back on, make sure it's connecting to the "iPhone tethering" access point (or whatever you named it)
4. quickly open up NetShare, hopefully the laptop will connect now

NUTSHELL: Basically just make sure the AT&T data connection on the iPhone is on, *active*, and working; THEN open up NetShare to broadcast that connection to your laptop.

Edit: I'd like to emphasize my use of the word "active" again. You have to make sure that the iPhone is not only switched on to using an AT&T data connection, but that it is actually in use. This means that the iPhone is not only listening for the data signal but also that a connection has been made with an AT&T cell tower. In other words, make sure you actually see some data going into your phone when you open up MobileSafari; browse to a real page and see something. Then switch on the wifi and quickly open NetShare before the iPhone decides it prefers the wifi over the 3G/Edge.

One more note: for anyone who's saying that NetShare is buggy because it doesn't seem to work reliably, it's only "unreliable" because of the iPhone preferred connection can be switched on the fly automatically be the phone. Apple put this (good) behavior on the phone for a reason (switching from wifi->3G or vice versa when appropriate), which is what makes NetShare work only sometimes. Which is why you have to force off the wifi when it is currently in use by the iPhone. Which is also why your NetShare tether will stop working when the phone goes to sleep (it switches off the 3G to save battery life) after a few minutes. This modal switching behavior is good for usability and battery life but bad for an app that (hackily) depends on a stable connection mode.

This helped me get it to work! Thanks

I don't get it working. I followed the instructions screen by screen and compared them to the instructions included by Nullsoft. I see one difference. Nullsoft speaks about entering 1080 in the port field - I can't see this filled in the instructions. But even if I do - it doesn't work.

Frustrated   :(

Try what I quoted one post up

Firefox is being silly....

For those people who are using Firefox/Camino and saying that it doesn't work...read on:

These browsers have their own proxy settings within their preferences.

In firefox (3):
Go to Firefox >> Preferences >> advanced >> network
Click on 'settings'
Clck on 'manual proxy configuration'
Enter the ip address against SOCKS Host.

Save and Bob's your Uncle.

This is not working for me... any other suggestions? It is working fine in Safari... so I know the connection works. However, after entering in my info into Firefox 3.0.1, every time I try and go to a website, it simply spits back an empty file: "_PoYjel1.dms.part" and it is apparently designated as unidentified binary text....

Thoughts/Suggestions?

I got it to work in Tiger. I was making the mistake of getting out of the Netshare app on the iPhone and expecting it to tether. I must keep the app activated to tether.

That just worked for me. I tried everything then i put the 1080 in and it worked! tho my edge connections sucks. its as slow as my old dial up. back to the days of clicking a page jumping into the shower and coming back to see it still loading:D. tho i live in a place with poor cell coverage.

does anyone else have a decent connection with edge?

Oh SNAP! Omniweb browser does Hotmail!!!

now I will see if I can get onto Mobilme...

Oh SNAP!! it does Mobileme also and the login screen look perfect!!!

Edit: I don't get it; even Safari Hotmail and Mobile me is working great now. Amazing.

Now I can get rid of my Sprint Expresscard.

I show port 1080 in NetShare...is there a place to enter the port # on the desktop?

When you set your Proxy settings in System Prefs on your desktop there is a little space to the right where you enter your IP address for the 1080 number.

According to one of the iPhone speed tests I got 250 kbps and I've been watching the netshare app and it's pretty jumpy - not consistent speeds for anything but I have seen it as high as, no lie, 41 KB/sec. Not little b - big B!! :)

I'm in North Fort Worth, FWIW.

At the risk of being redundant, any PC (XP) setup directions out there would be very much appreciated.

This works great. Have it up running nicely with 1st Gen iPhone/EDGE network. Great for internet access in a pinch.

Question - is there ANY way to get this to work with Mac Mail?

Notes
-You will also notice that when your iPhone goes to sleep or you exit the netshare application it will quit and your mac will have no internet access via your iPhone.

i dont get it what if you iphone goes to sleep, the internet goes away?

so you will have to constantly be tapping the iphone screen from preventing it to sleep?

I've just spent about an hour trying to get this to work with my iBook (Panther) and my G5 (Tiger) with no luck at all. Can't see what I'm doing wrong as I'm following the instructions to the letter!

RE Mail

I got it to work, however i can't get mail with mac mail... is this a limitation or am i missing something?

You can easily go into settings to prevent your iPhone from sleeping. It will remain on till the power source dies or is cut off.

jwhittaker:
MobileMe mail works great for me in Safari or Omniweb; it could be the Omniweb download affected Safari so Safari works on my MBP. Before I had problems with Safari but not now. You may have to reboot or something or download OmniWeb.

I've tried to get this to work and it doesn't.

I've followed the instructions exactly and even the follow on suggestions. My edge is working, this application is not. Nothing every shows up under the bytes in/out display in the application on the iPhone. Nothing, nadda, zip.

This application does not work.

I'm on the latest version of both OS' on new hardware.

This is BS.

pc configuration?

cough cough.....

(getting on knee) and with great humility also request help in setting up a PC to use with netshare. Appreciation bestowed ahead of time.

Cheers
