I ran front row and I can't see any bleed either...

Only observation I have is that I've had to turn the brightness down about 5 notches because otherwise it's like sitting in front of a floodlight!!

(btw : did my bleed tests on full brightness )

And for what it's worth the graphics card is extremely quick - but then I am coming from an iMac with a XT1600 in it.

All in all I'm very happy...

so i guess that means it's from Czech Republic, manufactured in the 18th week of production? assuming they started manufacturing the new iMacs at the beginning of january (which i doubt) that machine should have made last week (ish)? or is that 1st week of production?

i still don't understand how these serial numbers work.

Thats really new if its a week 18....is it the 3.06GHz?

oh i get it now... it's the 18th week of the YEAR of production, not the actual week OF production... i'm a bit slow sometimes :p

so do you think that it takes a couple of months for apple to iron out the problems and that iMacs that are produced around week 20 or 30 will be problem free? i hope not... otherwise it seems like i'm going to be taking this back to the apple store every 2 weeks until they get a better shipment. as someone mentioned earlier in this thread, the initial complaints from the August '07 iMacs seemed to disappear after a while... i just though it was because people got use to their bad screens, but maybe the first few months of production are always problematic?

2.8ghz with Nvidia & 500GB HD, 4G Ram (crucial).

I tend to max out my CPU on my old one in Logic and FCP renders so I really didn't want to chance running the 3.06 hot for hours on end.

I will say that I had to calibrate the monitor though - I thought the default was really washed out - I like a high contrast image with a cooler white.

Yes, its a cZ model.

As for build - I think the basic tooling up for the alu iMac will be pretty tight by now. I would assume that Mboard or screen changes are really just 'different' parts at this stage rather than anything likely to create H/W issues.

I would say that compared to my previous 20" I find that with the 24" I've had to set it a good 2.5 ft away from me otherwise it is like sitting in front of the TV and just sent my eyes bonkers with 'too much screen'.

i can see the warm color gradient on my screen from across the room. it's particularly bad in the top left corner.

I know that its been stated earlier that others see gradients, color hues and major issues with mine, but I don't really notice them, and I am quite happy with it (see two photos below and judge for yourself). Brightness measurements with the digital-camera-as-light meter trick posted by LK show the corners to be 20% dimmer than the center, and there is slight backlight bleed in a few spots along the bottom on a dark scene in a dark room. Neither of these items are noticeable at all in normal usage.

The serial no. starts with W8742, and it was purchased in October 2007. Just another data point:

Solid grey screen.

That white-blue-white web pages someone created to test the screens.

Extreme left and right edges cropped and put next to each other:

it's just not acceptable. even when browsing the internet, pages like MacRumors are bothersome (as you can see). the middle is clearly brighter, and has normal color, while the edges (especially the left side) is much darker and has a blue tint. so no, so-called professionals are certainly not the only ones who should notice this problem. a $2000+ computer should NOT look like this, especially since the white iMac i upgraded from was evenly backlit and had no color problems.

it looks like one of those cheap backlit bilboards in the sketchy part of town... Apple seriously dropped the ball on this one... what a mess!

Putting digital color meter on it shows that the edge is about 40% darker than the middle. I could see how 40% could be annoying. When gradients were getting discussed last fall, they were in the range of 150% - 250%. That would be beyond annoying - that's what I thought we were talking about when people were saying "gradient".

i'd be really interested to know what are the first 5 digits of SaSaSushi's iMac, since he's a graphic designer and could see issues better than an average user, and claims to have no issues with his screen.

First of all, I'm sorry I gave you the wrong impression. While I do some graphic design work here, it is not my main gig. I'm a musician/teacher. I was pointing out that perhaps your eyes were extra sensitive to color inconsistencies since that is your profession.

That said, I do consider my eyes to be particularly reliable in terms of detecting gradients and color impurities.

As for the serial number of my machine it might not make a difference since I am not using the LCD panel that shipped with my iMac but rather a replacement installed by Apple Support here in Japan. My iMac was originally assembled in Shanghai, China last August.

I recommend Coconut Identity Card to quickly and accurately determine the manufacturing details of your machines.

The pictures you posted above show a horrible gradient, Darkroom. I'm anxious to hear if your replacement is up to snuff.

Wow, that second image is shocking - there is clearly something very wrong with your computer...

QP is a USA code.....is there bleed or gradient on your week 16?

Well, this is my 2nd iMac. The first one shipped out on May 1 [with a similar serial number] had lines on the screen, the Mac Genius replaced mine at the Apple Store. The replacement I received, I noticed 2 slightly brighter spots around the Dock area (default, bottom pinning). Other than that, it seems good and I can live with it.

Well I have been reading the forums section for this site for over 18 months and finally decided to join the community.

I have a launch 24" al and I have had the screen replaced last week. The first screen had terrible from the bottom bleed, and this one has left to right gradient.
Apple store is 10 minutes from my home, so all is well that ands well (hopefully)

Dave

they actually replaced the screen and you still have a color gradient?

using photoshop, you can increase the saturation of specific colors to judge color casts on your screen. besides the color shifts, which are not as easy to see for some people, what's clear to see is how the screen is brighter in the bottom center than the rest of the screen.
