So basically that guy on the Apple Discussion board got lied to?

well a ton of people got told the ATI was not the mobility version - my guess is that a number of apple employees like to talk out of their arse rather than admit ignorance.

I've had mine since last Tuesday, and it hasn't frozen once, been on nearly constantly doing some fairly heavyweight tasks.

BUT, I've only been using ethernet, WiFi was only active for maybe 20 minutes during the initial setup process.

I will activate WiFi tonight, and see if it has any negative effects (I hope not).

second imac

I've just reveive my second Imac in remplacement . They don't have the same serial number however problems are the same: Imac still freezing with wifi disabled.....

no chance....

I'm just thinking that IF they already have a fix up their sleeves they wouldn't be shipping out new replacement-iMacs so willingly.

I just want them to acknowledge the problem, sit down and find out what the cause of these lock-ups is and then tell the users ASAP. So far you only get contradicting stories, depending on which Tech Support guy/gal you're talking to ...

Thinking about it, the only time i havent had an issue was when my bluetooth was turned off (in windows)

I've also been having connection issues with my wireless keyboard and mouse (laggy and jumpy)

Ill try a few tests when i get home, in the meantime - anyone else using bluetooth and have a stable 4850 ?

My system seems stable so far, but I don't use WiFi to connect - I'm using an ethernet connection - nor do I use Bluetooth (I've got small kids who would likely abscond with the mouse if it was not tethered).

two non-freezing 4850 imacs not using bluetooth...

Just got my imac and it's one of the bad ones!

3.06GHZ INTEL CORE 2 DUO
4GB 1066MHZ DDR3 SDRAM-2X2GB
ATI RADEON HD 4850 512MB
1.0TB SERIAL ATA DRIVE
IWORK '09 FAMILY PACK
APPLE WIRELESS MIGHTY MOUSE-Z
APPLE REMOTE
KYBD (NUM) & USER'S GUIDE-B
COUNTRY KIT,IMAC 24-GBR

I've got both WIFI and Bluetooth ON as I have a wireless mouse and cannot connect via cable to my router. Wired keyboard. Wireless mouse.

Freeze occurred within 10 minutes of startup while watching a standard def movie trailer in Quicktime.

Will do some more testing but for those of you who have got a replacement, what is the procedure? Do you just call the Applecare number?

Just the keyboard
MX revolution is my mouse :)

I'm having issues with bluetooth stability anyway (both key/b and mouse seem to interfere with each other) and im think using both could possibly be a cause

Last night when i was stress testing the GPU (with and without wifi) my system was totally stable and the only thing i was doing differently was using USB mouse + key/b ...

just a thought !

power issue

It occurs to me, based on a discussion over in Ars Technica, that maybe the problem with the 4850 machines is power. I have a voltage regulator on my machine, and I have had absolutely no freezing issues. Do any of you owners of freezing machines have decent voltage regulators or high-quality UPSes on your machines?

So basically that guy on the Apple Discussion board got lied to?

No, no. I'm just saying that there is a disconnect between what the Apple phone reps know and what their engineers know. That is why they might be sending out replacement iMacs even though there might be a firmware update to resolve the issues.

Apple called me

I got a call from Apple, the representative mentioned my post in the Apple discussion boards. He said that he had been talking with an engineer who wanted to see one of the machines that has lockups and the replacement process got underway. Sending the machine out tomorrow, probably won't get my replacement until next week.

Unless he was lying (which is very unlikely, considering he called me after seeing my forum post), it seems that Apple does not have a fix for them yet.

My 2.93ghz machine showed up a couple of hours ago. No freezes so far, I've done set up, played some HD trailers on Quicktime, imported a few libraries, run iTunes and Safari quite a bit.

Mine was built in California, not using Wi-Fi, and hooked up to a UPS AC regulator.

*PLEASE READ*

Guys, I think we need to factor bluetooth in to this also!

My reason..?

Well, I so far (the weekend) havent had any freezes (WIFI on)

I run on the iMac an apple wireless bluetooth mouse and a wired keyboard

Just now, I brought my mini upstairs so I can connect it to the imac via FW800 to transfer some files. The mini uses an apple wireless keyboard

So i could run the mini in HD mode (press T on boot up) Iswapped the wired keyboard to the mini and paired the bluetooth keyboard to the imac

IT FROZE!!!!!

No programs were running apart from utorrent and safari!

coincidence???

I've had Bluetooth disabled since I first turned the iMac on and am still getting freezes.

Oh, ok. Sorry 'bout the misunderstanding there. Thanks for clarifying ...

it seems my iMac has stopped freezing , after i disabled wi-fi.

I used to have about 2-3 freezes a day. and now i havn't had a freeze for 2 days.

Thanks for giving us an update on this! It has definitely helped me decide to stay on track with my 4850 purchasing plan now that we all know how to avoid the freezing issue. Sounds like Apple should be able to fix this issue in no time!

I had no plans on using the WiFi at this point in time anyways... but I'm sure Apple will have the issue fixed by the time I would ever need or want to use WiFi on my iMac.
