No problems (with my 3.06 / 4850)! It has been nine days so far, problem-free running image-editing, WoW, Safari 3, watching a couple of iTunes HD movies, etc.

How many people dont have this freezing problem?

seems like the majority of people do! How very depressing :(

mine has crashed twice today - how do i do that ?

Spotlight the Console app and just glance through for string with 'ATI' 'Graphics' 'Channel' 'Error' 'Exception' or 'Timeout'. Example for an Nvidia card below

This is great. I just received the iMac and tested it for about an hour without freezes. Then I went ahead and reinstalled OS X, as I always do when I get a new Mac. Well, it freezed during the installation leaving the iMac non-bootable. Tried to reinstall again several times, even after giving it time to cool down for two hours, but it crashed every time.
So what should I do now? When a firmware update is released eventually, I won't be able to apply it.

Edit: I also noticed it'd turn on wifi during the installation, even when turning it off it freezes.

problem solved, more or less

From Apple support discussions:
"I think everyone here should try installing the "fan control" application to see if it fixes the problem. I have set all fan speeds to 2200 RPM with a low threshold of 30c and high threshold of 70c. So far everything has been working perfectly with these new settings...seems like this issue is fixed."

I know we shouldn't need to do this, but it seems to be a fix until Apple comes up with a more comprehensive answer. Downloading & installing "Fan Control" (http://www.derman.com/Download/Special/iMacFanControl.html) has worked for everybody that has reported trying it.

Of course, the role of WiFi and 3.06 showing up as 3.60 are unresolved, but at least folks are enjoying their new iMacs. Good news for me: 3.06, 1TB, 8GB, ATI delivery expected next week! Whew!

So far, no freezes. My GPU has not yet gone above 50 C (122 F), I don't know if that is good or because I have yet to tax the system that hard. I have been running it for 5.5 hours so far..albeit no games yet.

According to iStat Pro, my GPU is at 118F, GPU diode is 110F, GPU heatsink is 108F. My CPU fan is at 1700. I am not running fan control software.

I spoke to soon!

I stated I was not running the fan control but then realized it WAS installed. Remember, I am a Mac n00b.

Anyway, I removed it and rebooted. Within MINUTES, the GPU was up to 135F. Soon after that (unsure of temp) it froze up!

I hard reset, reinstalled the fan control, set the RPMs to 2500 and within minutes, the temperature was back down to 119F. I dropped the RPMs back to 1700 and am letting it sit that way the rest of the night while it performs a Time Machine backup.

In the morning, I will see how it is.

"I just got off the phone with Apple Tech Support. I asked if the issue has been fixed because I don't want to receive another iMac with the same issue, go through the whole troubleshooting steps, and then send it back again ... although it is nice to unbox a new Mac.

The good news is, they've identified the issue as ATI 4850 related, the new batch is supposed to have the firmware updated for the graphics card, although ATI has not released the firmware to public.

Fingers crossed."

Another one!

Imac 24" 1tb Radeon HD 4850
6 week delivery wait for an effing paperweight.

Replicate-able freezing by simply running visualiser in iTunes. Made it die 3 times in 1 hour!!!!

None of the chips are too hot, the fans are running as normal but there us OBVIOUSLY a problem with the graphics card.

Return

Just been on the blower to Jigsaw24.com and the iMac is going back for their engineers to poke and prod. According to their return dept, not one imac with the HD 4850 has been returned so far (take that with a pinch of salt).

Will get it replaced with identical spec machine and if that don't work it's time to choose a new model and accept that the 24" with HD 4850 is another SawTooth/WindTunnel - (ironic as I have a G4 sawtooth and it's always been fine).

boooo

Hmm...if it was a firmware problem you think they'd just patch it instead of sending out hundreds (thousands?) of replacements.

If that's true, then how long will it take for Apple/Ati to release the update to firmware?
If they don't hurry up, I'll have no choice but to call AppleCare and ask for replacement before the 14 days return period pass.

One would think so indeed.

Called tech support, they're totally in the dark and refused to email the engineers (based in the USA) to ask them if a firmware patch was imminent.

The chap on the phone said that if there is going to be a patch, it'll be released on Friday (as is the Apple custom).

It could be a simple matter of the firmware needing to be patched; the engineers are working on it but haven't told the minions in tech support. Then the unenlightened tech support folk keep sending out replacements...

If it gets fixed prior to my new imac arriving (the 5-6th) I’ll cancel the order. If not, I’ll try again with a new imac :)

So bear with me for a moment on that ludicrous scenario - the engineers are working on it, but they're not telling tech-support, so tech-support keep sending out replacements instead of telling people to wait, because an update is in the works? Heh. Disorganized much? ... but could well be true .... ;)

Well, they couldn't even give us a straight answer on wether or not the 4850 was the mobility.

Installed my brand new 4850 iMac and... no freeze a all...
Done all the updates, installed windows, copied all my files from my old mac
No problem, it's a beauty :D

Played a 1080p, iTunes visu... no problem at all

PS : wifi is off...

Same problems...(I've a 2.93 Ghz), today I ordered a replacement..

I'm sooooo disappointed...
