No way that would ever happen. Mass-scale is right. Do you have any idea how much it would cost Apple to test each computer ordered for "at least one day" before delivery? People were already complaining about ordering the ATI and having to wait 3-5 weeks for delivery. How much longer do you think it would have taken to test each one for "at least one day" before shipping?

And I know you'll say, "But I was just talking about testing the replacements for the malfunctioning iMacs." Either way, it's probably cheaper for Apple to replace or repair the iMacs of customers who complain, and, for those iMacs that are replaced, to refurbish and resell them at discounted prices later.

Gotta respect that bottom line.

You know you are probably right, now that I think more about that. They may do that, and wait for people to complain for now, while they work on a firmware fix and issue it out when the fix is done. ;)

AppleInsider now has a post regarding this particular issue: New iMac owners see Radeon HD 4850-related lock-up issue.
Thanks for those who sent it to them. Can we see a post as well here on MacRumors, maybe Engaget too?

It's unlikely the GPU is overheating causing the freezes. Since I always keep an eye on the temperature, every time my mac crashes, the GPU is always around 50 to almost 60 Celsius. It's quite normal.

Yeah, my iStat Pro puts my GPU temperature around 130F (54C) at the time of a crash. Typically, that has been the highest temperature for any of the components listed on iStat, so I agree that overheating is unlikely the issue.

On a more positive note: I am glad that my computer can perform basic functions in the meantime until such time that I replace it. Even in its handicapped state, it beats the pants off my old PowerBook G4 (look for this on eBay sometime next week).

Ha ha! Scooped MacRumors! Well done AppleInsider for bringing the issue forward. The more its in the public eye, the better.

1st Time Mac Purchase...I thought a Mac "Just Works"

Anybody know how widespread this freezing issue is? Any possibility that I'll be spared the freeze? Any reports of satisfied people with the 24"/3.06/ATI 4850?

Just received notice to expect delivery Mon, am I worrying too soon about this? Too many Questions?

aww ,they didn't link us ;(

I wanted to become interweb famous. ^_^

You will have to try it yourself. This is the first Mac I bought, and now typing on it. Overall, I like it a lot, the system freeze is annoying though. It could happen even when you watch YouTube. (Even my 5 years old computer can handle that pretty well with no problem...) Mac doesn't seem to report crash logs to Apple automatically, (or maybe it just won't prompt?) the only way to let Apple know is to gain more publicity.

We think it's less than 50% chance to get a bad iMac, according to https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/687169/

but that neglects the fact that those without problems do not tend to browse a troubleshooting forum.

So I'd say there's about a 75% chance your imac will be golden. just imo

Can anyone with a screwy 4850 iMac check the Console? See if there are any panic.log/Panic Reporter entries or if there's anything screwy in the system.log at the time of the freeze.

But you cant say this too

Of course less of the people having no problems are in forums

you can only be shure if you do a representative survey

I check it every time after a crash. No entry recorded at the time it freezes.

Could it be network traffic related? ppl are saying it crashes with safari and firefox... or playing WoW... what if you disconnect the system from the network and just do like photo editing for a while... or encode a movie? Will that freeze too?

Anyone willing to try this?

The console crash logs are empty even after 4 freezes.

New rumor

Here's a rumor:

Microsoft to debut new anti-Apple commercial featuring an iMac that freezes up. Compares it to Vista and users choose Vista over Mac.

Ok, don't shoot me for this. :D

I think you are on to something here, people report freezes when coping files over the network, dowloading stuff and watching movies on the internet.

i just had a freeze, while watching a video in Safari, 15 min after i cold booted my machine so the temprature of the system was pretty low. and nothing else was running.

That would certainly be possible. However, I can't imagine using a computer which doesn't connect to the internet. What can you use it for? :p

My iMac just froze again while I was listening to music and typing a reply here on the forum. It was a long one, but I won't bother retyping it again... :( Well, at least I can rule out Flash Player now.

Best rumor yet...lol.

I am a self declared newbie in line awaiting delivery of a 4850 iMac. Now I am wondering if this was such a good choice. I never experienced any of the so called blue screens of death with PC. I have been a PC type since the early 90's. I was very much looking forward to learning the new (to me) Mac OS but am now unsure of my decision.

Never had any of this kind of concern with PC...I could always work my way out of any problems. Never had to take it to a shop, rely on a help desk, etc.

I don't think it's network related. If you play an iTunes song try opening the visualizer in a separate window. Don't use it in full screen, but drag the corner as big as you can make it. I get a freeze out of this every time, usually in under a minute. With the window sized so large, I also monitor CPU usage and temperature, GPU temperature, and RAM usage using iStat Pro. None of iStat Pro's measurements suggest that a freeze is imminent, but then WHAM! . . .frozen.

I would more inclined to believe that Apple received a bad batch of 4850 cards, a revision of the card that doesn't work well with their firmware, or some installation problem with the cards going into the iMacs themselves.

Nothing to date would point me towards this being caused by a software problem of any kind, including network access.

So a firmware fix for the 4850 problems... Would that just mean under-clocking the video chip to give stability, possibly due to overheating?!

I doubt it, because think of the people who have had these iMacs for an entire week without any freezes... they sure wouldn't appreciate a lesser performance.

Just to prove my theory wrong, let's entertain my theory.

If jaw1034 can make it happen instantly like that, can you pull the network cable out (or shut off the wireless) and do the itunes visualizer experiment for 1-5 mins? Let's just rule it out... this helps the community figure out the problem and possibly find a workaround.

even so, who would want to use their mac without the internet. ugh, I would be so bored.

If the NIC had something to do with it then why aren't the GT120 and GT130 iMacs having the problem also?

I would be interested to know how people in the "2nd batch" of shipments make out. If they'll have a high percentage of bad macs or if the next batch comes with minimal problems.

The fact Apple is shipping replacements to unhappy consumers leads me to believe they know something that we don't and for some reason think replacing it will fix the problem (and the user won't get two bad ones in a row).

I ordered Wed night and it shows April 25-30th for estimated delivery, so I guess I'll find out for myself sooner or later.
