The profits they make on those premium models must be insane. I did some research some time ago if the titanium cost is really that much higher than aluminium and I realized the cost might be like 4-8x higher for the same part, but the question is: how much really cost to make for example that aluminium Watch casing (material and machining). Is it like $10-15? So a titanium casing one would be max $100? And I guess they will sell it for like 3x the price of the aluminium Apple Watch. I understand that main goal of most businesses is to make profits, but oh boy, this is "a gold mine".

Titanium is about 3 x the cost of stainless steel per tonne....but given that there are only a few grams of metal the real cost difference is tiny. Titanium is harder to work with and that’ll add another incremental increase. I would hazard I guess that an Aluminium case might cost $2-3 and SS, maybe twice that. (Everyday $20 watches typically have a SS case). $10-12 for Titanium?

Aston Martin tried this with the Cygnet, according to one source it sold a total of less than 600 units. And then they put a V8 in it (as a one-off custom order).

They made the Cygnet to comply with EU rules on average CO2 for car manufacturers - they didn’t expect to sell any, they just needed a model capable of low emissions in their range.

People spending the absurd amounts of cash on them are just wealthy culturally adapted brainwashes IMO. It’s a thing. Needing, craving status as some form of personal gratification and measurement of success. Those are the people spending $1300 on the throwaway Apple watches.

Do you really believe that this is less true for people who buy Rolex?

The white ceramic version was gorgeous, looking forward for a series 5 like this.

I agree, the white Ceramic was really nice looking and I loved the weight of it. The only thing I don’t like about the Watches that are not the silver stainless steel is that not all of the bands go with them.

I have 132 bands and each of them go really well with my S0 silver stainless steel.

Still have my Rolex GMT master from when I was a recon aviator in the Navy circa 1964. Fifty years later it is worth way more than I would ever have thought. Offers anyone :)
Where does one with rare watches go to sell them? There must be a place other than eBay, right?

Titanium is something I always wondered about and thought they might think about for the top of the range to replace the ceramic.

I have a Titanium watch though and to be perfectly honest I love the feel and weight and look of the stainless steel Apple Watch so I really hope that they don't switch and this is just an option.
I agree. In addition would be fine but not as a replacement. I am curious on looks and price though.

What's the deal with mentioning Japan Display? What advantage will they bring to the current Watch displays?

I don’t think the current displays are OLED.

I’ll give you my Apple Watch Series 3 for it.

I never understood why someone would purchase a high end smart watch. High end watches like Rolex and omega are timeless, smart watches are not. Dropping $1300+ on a watch that will be obsolete in 2-3 years doesn’t seem like a great investment.
A smart watch isn't an investment, though.

Perhaps you mean it's just not a good way to spend money, and maybe you're right.

But a lower end Rolex is north of $5,000.00 and that's not what the modern Apple watches cost. I'm sure these new materials will be $1,000.00+, but not Rolex territory.

I stop at the cost of the SS---that's expensive enough for me.

Apple Watch does indeed have an OLED screen already.
Correct, since the beginning.

I just last month picked up an automatic Seiko for $350. It serves functionally and as a fashion accessory.

No, it won’t tell me the weather or my heart rate. But, I’ll venture to say it’ll last longer than any smartwatch many times over. Mechanically and probably from a fashion perspective as well.

They each have their strengths and weaknesses.

I’d rathee have they fix the scratch resistance of the display. It is horeendous as of now, my Apple watch ssries 4 is full of deep scratches after only moderate use.

Ill try and generalize as much as you :

No it isn’t. My series 1 has few scratches, none of them deep, after daily use since purchase(i.e heavy use).

You have 132(!!) Apple Watch bands?! Wow. Quite a collection!

I see a lot of comments about the price of an apple watch and how it's a bad investment because you might get 3 or 4 years out of it before you want to buy a new one. With all good quality mechanical watches you have to pay for a full servicing every 5-8 years to replace worn parts and gaskets to make sure everything is keeping accurate time and is still waterproof. On my Omega this is about $750. Rolex servicing start around $800 and go up depending on the model.

I look at the replacement cost on the apple watch as basically the service cost on a luxury watch, but the key difference is a 3 year old apple watch will still have some resale value, and the new models always have more features than what it replaces.

Finally, bring back the more premium cases for Apple Watch!

I’ll take a ceramic edition this time around, if it remains the highest tier of Apple Watch case material.

Those are screenshots from the new watches right? Does that mean the new watches have a Quicktime video player onboard? As far as I know the current models don’t.

Do you really believe that this is less true for people who buy Rolex?

No, not really. A different degree maybe but not any less true. I have not studied psychology professionally but the subject and the mind interest me a lot. I personally believe that a sliding scale of “ego” exists and is highest in people who chase status and wealth. Not all, of course. Lots of down to earth wealthy who don’t appreciate brand names/status whatever you want to call it. But I’ve run into so many wealthy people and conversely many poor or homeless as well and I can’t help but notice the shedding of ego the poorer someone gets. There’s some kind of protection mechanism in people who feel like they need the latest and greatest. It’s some type of unconscious avoidance of something they don’t like about themselves and they think status hides it or improves it. Imo.

I have it on good authority that Ceramic and Titanium are just a ruse, they will actually make the next Apple Watch out of Mimetic Poly-alloy and it will be called the Apple Watch 1000 not the Apple Watch 5.
