Old hat. They need specifics and to hit those specifics home. People might think, 'Oh great less trouble, less viruses, I'll go and look at the Apple site' - then they get hit with big price tags and it all goes out the window. Best stick with the cheaper, seemingly more high specced PC and use some anti-virus

Tell that to recession-proof Apple who is turning out record Mac sales ("big price tags") during a recession.

Best stick with the cheaper, seemingly more high specced PC and use some anti-virus.

Which seems to be the exact opposite of what's happening, and the funny part is that MS and especially Ballmer, still can't figure out why. Priceless.

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...calls_apples_mac_growth_a_rounding_error.html

"We do not, say, like Apple, believe in low volume, very high prices, very -- Apple is a great company, does a fine job. But their model says high margin, high quality, high price," he said. "That's kind of how they come to market. We say we want big market share. But with big market share, you take a lower price."

The 40-minute speech covered a variety of Apple-related topics, including product pricing, advertising, and the number of Macs in the audience. Ballmer noted the large number of Apple machines in the crowd as he spoke, saying the Windows maker has a "low share" in the investor audience.

"I can see the Apple logos versus the PC logos," Ballmer told the crowd. "So we have more work to do, more work to do. Our share is lower in this audience than the average audience. But don't hide it. I've already counted them. I have been doing that since we started talking."

Yup. That about sums it up. :D

There & Back Again
For all Apple's innovation, these latest ads are pretty much devoid of any imagination. A lot of the earlier ones had a lot more wit and punch to them.

I admit that the challenge of touting the features of OS X in 30 seconds is pretty hard to do, but that last ad doesn't say much to a PC user who sees a $2.5K laptop vs a $700 one. I could see them telling themselves $700 plus a virus subscription @ $70 year still equals amazing savings over a MBP.

If they could show off the features, they would smash the PC laptops.

Maybe it's about time Apple re-targetted the UK with these TV ads.
Microsoft are having a field day with UK TV at the moment whilst Apple's are sat on their website.

Come on Apple BITE BACK just like Blackberry did!

Has anyone ever met a PC user that switched to a Mac and didn't like it? I haven't. All of these PC users that dog on Macs probably haven't even tried a Mac.

Agreed. Yet on the other hand, based solely upon what I see every day in these forums, there seem to be very few Mac users who can even comprehend what it's like to have to fit a computer purchase into a very narrow budget. For those people -- and there are more of them every day, with the economy the way it is -- purchase price is the killer factor, no matter how much they might prefer an OS X machine.

Ignorance is a two-edged sword.

I think people already know why, and have known for a long time. It's common knowledge.

So true. Apple Fan Boys will pay whatever price Apple decides on. That is common knowledge.

Oww, and by being expansive and shiny = exclusive and bling bling... so all of us apple users can feel better then those loosers using PCs. In reality most of us run a Windows OS on our macs cause...well macs just cannot do everything. Take away bootcamp and see how many people will remain with apple.

I am guilty as, love my MB air....ow its way way overpriced... but i can have an elitist complex when i pull it out.

These ads used to be funny, but it's been a while since I've gotten any pleasure from watching them.

"any PC you get is gonna have those problems"

I've had my self built PC for 3 years and it has never had a virus or any of that other crap. Not using IE pretty much solves 95% of PC problems.

IE is still the most-used browser as of last month, and more than a 3-1 share over Firefox. It isn't the 90% dominance it once was, but if you take the 9% of the overall browser market out that are non-Windows, more than 3/4 of all PC users still use IE as their primary browser. If IE causes 95% of the problems (according to your totally anecdotal Pareto), then the vast majority of PC users must have the experience that this ad is citing. It may be a sweeping generalization to say "any PC you get is gonna have those problems", but it holds true for almost all PC users based on the transitive property of bullcrap.

most of that is corporate use. most in-house apps require IE6

Even if I grant you that, just 15% of the 67% total IE share is IE6. That's still well over half the PC users out there that are good candidates for security breaches. If Apple is so wrong for using sweeping generalizations, the PC rebuttals have to avoid them too.

I'm SO amazed at some ppl coming here claiming that Windows7 is all the Holy Grailz of the Internetz without taking into account that it's not even out yet! Windows has still a long way to go to match Mac OS X's elegance and simplicity.

It so reminds me of the Vista release days. :D

I've been using the Win7 Beta's and Release Candidates for over a year now. Microsoft has reported over 9 million official downloads of the Win7 RC, that number doesn't include the unofficial downloads from bittorrent. At the current rate of Mac sales (aprox ~ 2 million a month), it will take 5 months of OSX sales to equal the number of people who are testing Windows 7. There is a reason why so many people claim that Win7 is fantastic (I am one of them).

After a year with Win7, the only persistent problem I've had is with IE8, it consistently loses the cursor focus and I have to click inside text to scroll with the keyboard. I've encountered no other problems. It is more stable than any flavor of OSX I've ever had the pleasure of using.

Haven't seen the new ad (blocked at work), but why does Apple still advertise based on reasons why not to buy a [Windows] PC, rather than reasons to buy a Mac? If they are going to use the "doesn't have viruses card", then why not buy a Linux computer. As for "headaches", I must say that I have heard about "headaches" from all sides.

Fact is the general pc user doesn't care about geotagging, or making movies, etc. While it's an added bonus, i can tell you right now the general pc user is more concerned about things working when they plug them into their computer, viruses, and reformatting, Apple know's this, and thats what they play to.

As much as people say Windows 7 is the best Windows ever (which it very well may be) the taste of virus and formats with XP, and things not working with Vista are fresh in people's minds till this day, and at the end of the day people just want their computers to "work" with minor hassle. The commercials get this point across.

Wait, what ? You say people don't care about iPhoto or iMovie, they care about things getting done ? What are these mythical things that need to get done but don't involve software ? People don't boot computers to look at their background image, unless they are clinicaly insane.

How bout an ad that showcases what exactly "just works" and what the user can "get done" with minor hassle instead of yet another broken record "Microsoft has viruses, trojans and malware...". Of course, this is ignoring the fact that the recent iWork '09 torrent had a trojan for OS X in it...

What you say and what I say isn't different. You just think they need to drive the viruses thing home again and again. Most people are just getting tired of it and frankly, I don't think it's really helping them anymore. How bout they actually try to be something else than that "Yeah, we're more expensive and don't really have anything good to say about our software, but we don't have viruses!" company.

"Windows: when you're ready to compromise".

I thought that was pretty harsh, a perfect sound bite, and awesome advertising. ;)

Macs are for stupid people who can barely grasp the concept of a two button mouse and think that a computer that matches their wallpaper is more important than the actual performance.

Funny PCs are for stupid people who don't know the difference between a terminal and a command prompt. I think using performance and windows in the same sentence is an oxymoron. I guess that is why people who use their computer for computing, video editing, and audio recording, generally use a Mac or Linux.

Exactly my point. It doesn't look good when all a company can say in their advertising is why not buy the other guy's product. I believe that is what is typically referred to as FUD. They need to scrap the whole PC thing out of their commercials and get back to basics.

Here is a Mac. This is what the Mac can do for you. These are the features that will attract you to our product.

Hmm doesn't everyone that has a computer of some sort use it for computing?

Lame and boring; no real substance here. We know this already folks!
Apple - time for a change in the ads. Yeah, they're getting old.
This one wasn't so cool. More rehash of the same stuff...

A lot of really funny stuff ended up on the cutting room floor, apparently. Hey, you have 15 seconds to make your pitch.
