2-3 times faster does not seem all that much for 8 years.

I also have the mid 2011 imac, and if this is just 2 times faster I would be very disappointed.

Maybe there are exponential gains as geekbench scores increase instead of just 1 to 1 gains?

Only hard drives have seen tremendous gains in that time period. Processors aren’t a ton faster now - just more effiicent. In the last year or so core counts have increased, but even that is not used the majority of the time. It’s still the feel that is the big difference though. The PCI-Ex SSD storage Apple uses makes the newest macs feel 100 times faster, even if most of the components aren’t.

Well for me anything is going to be a big upgrade. I only had a regular 7200 HDD, so not even fusion, and 4 GB RAM which I later updated to 12, but was not even properly set up as I had 3 modules rather than 4. Will do it right this time.

Looking at some of these timelines.. order 3/21 for store delivery and I’m still sitting at 4/2 pickup.. is home delivery always that much faster ? noob question.. first IMac :/

Is yours configure or built to order?

The OP on that Reddit thread said it was hovering around 3.9GHz. But at 75-80c, so it seems like there's some headroom for a higher frequency. The comment about it not not reaching the single core turbo boosted to 5GHz and all cores turbo boosted to 4.7GHz seems concerning, so really looking forward to more tests.

Not too concerning regarding all cores turbo... Anandtech did a test where when left unrestricted and allowed to go above it’s “95W” limit, it would do 4.7 on all cores. But once they restricted it to 95W, all cores stayed at their base clock.

I would be curious if he manually sped up the fan to dissipate heat more would the frequency increase further. For my uses I would rather have the fan going full blast and have the machine run cooler than run silent, but run hotter. Heat kills and not sure why Apple values silent running more than getting rid of heat.

3 times for the cpu means a lot in 8 years...since we were all used to have just 10-15% perf boost from one year to another, but i guess in terms of the dGPU the jump is even higher...i think its around 4x or even 5x if we test the vega gpu

My BTO was available for in-store pickup today. I got the i9 and 1TB SSD, otherwise stock (I'll upgrade the RAM myself later).

Ran Geekbench on it real quick: https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/12577995
Seems to indicate it's the new top of the heap for single-threaded performance, and second only to the iMac Pros in multithreaded which isn't surprising given some of those have 18 cores (https://browser.geekbench.com/mac-benchmarks).

Didn't notice any additional fan noise during the test. Pretty impressed with it so far. I came from a 27" 2012 iMac.

macOS 10.14.4 from App Store is build 18E226 (on my other macs). My new iMac is 10.14.4, but the build is 18E2034. Does anyone know the difference or even which is more recent?

So mine arrived at the local depot last night. I thought maybe it would be delivered today, so I called FedEx and was told that it has a shipper hold and can't be delivered (or picked-up) until tomorrow. I don't know if that's accurate or not. Anyone else in the US already get a Fed Ex delivery, or have one today?

I'm not going to complain. I ordered on 3/22 and was quoted delivery after Apr 4, and I'll have it a week before that, and I won't be home in time to even open it tonight, so it doesn't really matter.

Mine is with UPS and still no update since export scan. It could be in the country or maybe still in China. Scheduled for Monday. Really was hoping to get it before the weekend. My Monday is crazy busy.

A pessimistic 5% increase year to year would result in a 150% increase over 2011 speed. A slightly optimistic year to year improvement of 15% would result in about a 300% increase in speed. I think the actual gains were in the 10-15% range year to year.

I'm coming from a 2010 iMac, so I'll see up to a 350% increase in speed.

and from the dGPU stand point?? 400% 500% ? :))

Hello everyone,
use mac for work and gaming.
at the moment I have an imac 5k 2017 with i7 and radenon pro 580 and an egpu.
I was thinking of getting the new imac 2019 with i9 and vega 48.
Can it be satisfying in gaming? (with bootcamp) I would still use the egpu when necessary.
with my current mac I play very well using the egpu and also with the 580.
I know that a PC would be better to play, but for space and work requirements, I only need imac.
I would change the mac because I can resell it at a great price

It sounds to me like you already have a pretty decent setup for your needs. Unless your apps can take advantage of the additional cores and you’d get a real productivity boost why spend the money. I’d save it for a significant future upgrade.

You can decide if its worth it.

Take your resell price, put the price you want the new iMac for and see if the difference is worth it.

Scheduled to be delivered Friday 3/29. I live in Southern Calif, about 60 miles north of Los Angeles. iMac was sent from Shanghai China to Oakland CA, which is about 250 miles north of my home. From Oakland it was sent to MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE???
WTH? Now it’ 2/3 of the way across the US! Geeesh!
I live in SF Bay Area and mine was delayed a day, arriving on 29th, Friday. It was in AK and then transported to KY! I don’t understand that either.

My paperwork was slated for delivery Wed when I awoke on Monday morning. It then hung around in Shanghai for a bit and flew to KY and was delayed to Thursday. Yesterday it flew from KY to Alaska (I live in NC) and then back to KY early this morning around 2 am. It’s been hanging there today and is now delayed again to tomorrow. I ordered on 3/20. BTO 27” 8th gen i5 512 SSD.
