Does anyone know the stock levels in the Regent's Street store right now?! What are the chances of me going in there and picking one up? I was gonna buy online, but after all the talk rubbishing the screens of the new iMacs I thought I better test the goods first.

Cheers

Worth phoning around to check a few places. My local reseller had a few machines in last week and the online guys like Mac Warehouse and Computer Warehouse seem to have them in now, just so long as its not the Extreme version you're looking for, you should be able to pick one up today or have one delivered tomorrow.

I've ordered the 2.8 Ghz model and can't wait for it to come, shipped a few days ago but like it seems with a lot of people, it is still stuck in Shanghai waiting for it's plane! And i thought when it shipped it was going to be delievered 1-3 days after but nevermind just have to wait a bit longer, i hope it will be here by next monday!

Edit: i forgot to mention that i was using a student discount, and where you normally get 6% off, i placed my order through calling and got my imac for £1249 instead of the £1508 it was going to cost me with no discount at all, thats about 17.2%, almost like VAT free. This did include a £60 contract uplift instead of applecare (called up and apparently same cover), but still with this, it seems that if you call then you get a better saving than online, and i have heard that if you want a bigger discounts, just talk to the sales person really nicely.

I was in London yesterday so popped into the Regent Street store for a good look at (hopefully) my next purchase!

The iMacs look WAY better in real life than in photos. But what struck me most was the glossy screen.

It looks fabulous.

The store was brightly lit, with sunshine pouring into the front through those big windows.

The screen were reflecting. A bit. I adjusted the tilt. I looked from every angle I could manage. There was a teeny bit of glare, some reflection.

When I started using stuff (Pages, DVD Studio Pro, Adobe Indesign, general system stuff), within about 2 second I didn't notice the glare or reflections at all. In fact, after using DVD Studio Pro for a while (which is quite dark), I remembered the reflection "issue" and actually had to think about refocussing my eyes to see it.

Upstairs I wandered past the kids area. There were several kids playing on the iMacs, and the sun was coming in even more upstairs. As I walked around, there was some reflection, but the actual images being displayed far outshone even the strongest reflection point. The depth of colour and clarity (and brightness) really stood out and again within a second or two I had totally forgotten that there was any reflection.

So, in summary, people like to complain. Sure, if you have the iMac facing a window, it will be a problem, but then that's probably a bad computer area set-up anyway.

I'm sold on the 20"!!

No iMac 24 at Regents Street for at least another week; just came off the phone and they ain't getting anymore in til next Friday (24th)!!!

It would be quicker to order online, wouldn't it?

Quite a few UK suppliers have the new iMacs in stock, so yes, you could order one today for delivery tomorrow if you're desperate.

Really, like who? Tou talking Mac Warehouse etc?

I reckon if you oredered iMac 24 from the Apple online store you'd probably get it next Friday

Yip, Mac Warehouse, Computer Warehouse, PC World etc.

If you order anything other than the 2.8 model from the online store you should have it next Friday, but the lead-times do seem to be increasing if anything, so I'd get in fast!

I'm torn whether to get one of the old ones right now to be honest. I do a lot of graphics work and am a bit unsure about the glossy screen in the new 24 inch. I tried to find out if it's the same display (apart from the gloss) as the old 24 inch - I realise that the 20 inch has an inferior tn panel, not sure about the 24 inch though.

I'm going down the Apple store tomorrow to check it out - not been able to get down there til now....been up to my neck in it I tell ya :)

Cheers

yea its true the 20-inch uses a lower grade quality screen. from my understanding and reading the 24-inch uses a much higher quality screen. its really quite vibrant and amazing.

They have supported extended displays for years. Even the G5 iMac supported an extended display and that was out 2 or 3 years ago.

Pardon my pedantry maverick808 but the G5 only supported mirroring - even the rev c (which i have). The extended mode only became supported with the first intel iMac.

Do you know if it's the same technology as the previous 24 inch generation (apart from the gloss)?

Cheers

thats gotta suck. i hear there are mods/cracks to make it extended desktop though.

sorry dont have any info on that.

Anybody been to the Manchester Trafford Centre Apple Store recently? I'm not buying just yet but wanted to pop in on Saturday and have a play - I assume they're all kitted up with display iMacs at least?

I went in the day after they came out and they had a couple of the new ones in even then, so I expect they will have plenty in and be all kitted up since then.

Just buy one mate, you will love it :D

Heh, oh absolutely - I run a 12" PowerBook G4 (see my sig) so I am in desperate need of a big screen and a fast proc.

But I need to wait for a tax rebate to come in first. Bah!!

They seemed to be trickling into stores until recently i ask the regent street store if there were any 20" in stock on wednesday and they only had 7 units which came in that morning they weren't even in stock according to the database but the guy called upstairs and found out 7 just came in that morning.

The online store has changed the ship time on the 20" from 5-7 to 3-5 days whilst the 24" remains at 5-7 days. So i think availability is impproved. Samecan'tbe said for the MBPs however especially if you order the 7200 RPM drive. Chances are you will be waiting for up to 3 weeks.

Bump!

Just ordered myself a 20" 2.4GHz iMac with BTO 500GB HDD. Due to ship in 3-4 days! So this is going to be the longest week ever I think - I'm upgrading from my 12" 867MHz PowerBook, so this is one hell of a leap up...

Picked up a 2GB stick of RAM from Crucial (seemed to be the cheapest around at the moment) so I'll have 3GB total.

Any tips on how to go into stasis/hibernation until the thing turns up?

As Far as i'm aware both the old screens 20" and 24" were S-IPS, where the new 20" uses a worse TN screen and the new 24" uses a better H-IPS.

i have my 24' 2.8ghz 4gb ram 750gb hdd sitting here. its a very nice machine, too bad my brother uses it, im stuck with my MBP. (dont get me wrong, i LOVE my machine).
