Thanks for doing such a thorough job with the photographs! Hmm, I see what you mean... the screen reflects about the same as the picture you have hanging above your imac. I am in a similar room but my desk sits at a 45% angle to the window behind me (as oposed to being straight on as yours is). I may get a picture of my own to see what sort of reflections I should expect. If the replacement you get is silent, not flickering and undamaged do you think you can live with the gloss?
Also, might I suggest you get some curtains that really darken the room:)

If the replacement is perfect as far as sound and flicker go then I will force myself to live with the glossy screen. I'm sure the screen looks amazing in a completely dark room (then again, the previous 24" matte screen looked amazing in both bright and dark rooms :( )

And yes, I probably will end up getting some really thick curtains as the desk is quite large and I don't really have anywhere else I can move it in the room.

Blackout curtains will be the way to go. After all, if you can eliminate the reflection, you should enjoy the screen a lot, which will make up for having to use your office with the curtains drawn during the day.

I'm ok with glossy, but I'm wondering whether Apple will quietly update the iMac with a BTO matte option soon enough. Then again, they haven't done that with the Macbook yet.

I just got a picture and held it in front of my current 20" g4 iMac and the reflections are pretty bad :( I work as an illustrator and these reflections would really stop me looking at my images as a whole to see how they're working.
I'm really considering canceling my order and going for a mac pro instead (maybe this is Apples plan?).

Unfortunately the ram I ordered from that website you suggested just turned up. Wonder if they will exchange it for something the pro can use?

eBuyer will let you return the RAM within 7 days but you will have to pay shipping (should be less than £5 though as it's not a big package).

I'm a programmer and writer so I spend the majority of my time either looking at code in Visual Studio or writing documents in Pages/Word. Whilst the glossy display is annoying and slightly distracting it won't impede my work too much. However, if you are an illustrator or designer and don't have a completely dark room to work in then personally I'd definitely advise against getting the iMac. Sorry, but I really think it would slow your work down.

What a nightmare Maverick, sorry to hear about that. I'm now having second thoughts tbh. I'm sitting here in front of my current 24" iMac and I think based on that and having now seen the new one in the flesh, that I'm going to have to change my room around to minimise glare.

As for the noise levels, hopefully that's just a one-off, unlucky machine, but it is definitely making me think about canceling my order for the new machine.

Edited to say: Just looked at your pics and that's pretty depressing to see actually. Especially given the weather in Scotland just now.

Typical. Would you believe that my order just changed to "Shipped"! I phoned Apple and the very nice lady in the US told me that they would collect it after delivery at their own expense (should normally be £60 for purchases over £300). I think mentioning that I was intending to buy a mac pro and cinema display may have helped. It's a shame because the iMac would pretty much suit me and the pro may even be too much for my needs as a 2d artist. Ah well I'll be entering the world of perfect colour calibration and the ability the swap parts out as I require. Also, I won't need to keep getting rid of the screen as and when I get upgraditis as I have done with the previous 3 iMacs I have owned.

Just a quick question about some people getting NHS discount.

I work for the NHS too, and have registered, but is not possible to get the same discount when presenting you ID badge at a store?

Thanks.

Oops. I appear to have gone and bought one.

I only popped into the apple shop in nottingham to check out the glossy screens and um, sort of, accidently appear to have managed to have parted with cash and walked away with one

Bought it with a Netgear DG834G wireless modem router so they did the two for £970 and chucked in a free copy of Parallels Desktop. Am not very good at haggling but it brought the price of the Imac down to £915 and knocked a bit off the modem, so I'm pretty chuffed.

Was going to get NHS employed sister to order it for me, but I thikn the saving was only about £60 in the end, and she doesn't live close by so it would have been a hassle getting over to her to pick it up yadda yadda yadda. At least this way I didn't have to take a day off work and wait in for a delivery either.

Am having to work today so can't go home and play on it yet, but as I'm on a mac here at work, I couldn't resist opening the box and plugging in the new keyboard and mouse. WOW. Never has typing been such a joy is all I can say :D

Sorry if I gave anyone unrealistically high hopes about the NHS discount. Just re-read my post and when I said "£150 off the total price"... in my head I knew what that meant which was that I had bought an iMac, Applecare, iLife and iWork. It wasn't £150 off just the iMac. Will try to be more clear in the future - just got a bit excited!!

Well I just ordered and saved 70-80 quid? Thats on the 24" 2.8Extreme

Either way, a nice saving to be had :D

Now the 'waiting game' starts Arrrrgh.....

Since its monday, and the order has been done...Anyone think it'll be here on my desk by the end of the week?

*hopes and prays*

Craig. :)

thers a 7 day waiting list on new imacs in aust, thats without the wireless kb tho... that ads a loooong time onto the list!! they must be low on stock

happy waiting!

Does anyone know if the apple stores here in the UK will have the new iMacs in now or will we have to wait a few weeks for them to get shipped over here?

Thanks.

I've quoted just incase the topic has derailed after many pages, but a friend I met online works at the Regent street Apple Store and they have plenty there, so I may only assume that they have them in other Apple Stores across the country too :) (There aren't that many so it's not like they've got a lot to fill, haha)

Ask and you shall receive the following on a 2.4GHz 20":

Apple online: £949
Apple education online: £891
NHS discounts: £ 891
Local mac reseller after enquiry from me by email only £887

worth asking the resellers what they'll do!

Let me get an idea here, are people who've ordered online received theirs or are abou too?

Just so I know my imac wont take over 2 weeks as it states to arrive :(

Thanks

I ordered my 24" 2.8Ghz iMac on 7th August.

It shipped on Monday 13th, is currently waiting to board a plane at Shanghai and is expected to arrive on my doorstep on the 23rd.

Time goes by, so slowly.

Long time lurker, first post :)

Hmmmm, really can't make my mind up what to do with this.

I sold my 20" G5 iMac back in April when I heard a new iMac would be on the horizon this year, but i'm just not entirely convinced with the display.

I'm a graphic designer and where the iMac would be positioned in the room I think would just reflect like crazy and obviously with the work I do would put me off massively. Everything else i'm completely happy with - I looked at them in the Meadowhall store and the thing is stunning, just the screen...

Are there any designers out there using the iMac? How is the display?

My current thoughts are:

1. Get the 24" iMac and see if I can get used to the display (24" screen would be ideal).

2. Get the 20" higher spec iMac and a 23" Cinema display and run in dual display

3. Save up a bit longer and get a Mac Pro with cinema display (Don't really need the power of the Pro but I guess the upgradeability is a pro).

Decisions, decisions...

Does anyone know the stock levels in the Regent's Street store right now?! What are the chances of me going in there and picking one up? I was gonna buy online, but after all the talk rubbishing the screens of the new iMacs I thought I better test the goods first.

Cheers

current imacs do not allow for extended desktop, just mirroring.

Sorry that's wrong. The iMacs definitely support extended desktops on a second monitor. My previous white 24" iMac did and the new ones also do...

Yes I'm serious. They have supported extended displays for years. Even the G5 iMac supported an extended display and that was out 2 or 3 years ago.
