There hasn't been a single Apple product in the last few years that added features without increasing the price.

Well there was the 2018 iPad, but yes I too expect an increase not just because, but due to the addition of FaceID and change in form factor to thinner bezels.

I have this crazy feeling that the new iPad Pro will be at least one giant step closer to being a more useful PRO tool. I am betting my dad $.25 that it will have mouse support of some type. I hope I am right. I need the money!

LOL good thing the bet is so little given that iOS 12 is already out and if such support was being added it would have been found locked away in iOS 12’s code by now.

It could be a similar scenario to last year with the iPhone. They release an iPad Pro with updated internals (Like the iPhone 8 with same home button etc) at the same pricing. Then release the iPad X, starting at 899 for the 11'' and 999 for the 12.9'', available mid November.

Interesting times for the iPad Mini, the market for that device I don't think will stretch to pricing levels like the X - whilst versatile it would offer poor value compared to Kindle Fires etc.

Apple hasn't made a major redesign of a product during the last 3 years without increasing the price at the same time. That includes the Macbook Pro, the iPhone and the Apple Watch. The iPad 2018 is a very old design with just a newer processor added, plus pencil support.

If I do not win the bet, it is back to the street corners for me. Please help me Apple!

Maybe the lineup will look something like this:

iPad 2018 9.7: starting at $329 with 32GB
iPad Pro 10.5 with updated internals: starting at $649, with 64GB
iPad x 11.5: starting at $899, with 128 GB
iPad x Max 12.9: starting at $999, with 128 GB

I feel the worst case scenario is a $59 to $79 bump - but they could easily stay the same - they aren't phones. Pricing actually stayed static between 2015 & 2017 (although there was an almost immediate $50 bump) but they increased storage - the 2015 12.9 128gb Cellular sold for $1029 - then the 2017 came out (middle storage) and the 256gb cellular started at the same price - then bumped to $1079 - so there are examples of pricing staying relatively stable - and they don't want these to creep up past Retina MacBooks or the 13" MBP. I plan on buying the middle storage 12.9" when it comes out - looking forward to it - 256gb is the sweet spot for me.

iPhone XR vs iPhone 8 seems relevant: XR ‘added’ Face ID and edge-to-edge display with same resolution (but bigger), plus usual annual updates to camera and processor etc. XR is $50 more than 8 (for same 64 GB storage).

New iPad Pros are rumoured to also add Face ID and edge-to-edge display, plus possibly new wireless pencil charging and presumably usual processor etc updates. Increase of $50-100 seems about right.

I predict the ipad pro will have price choices for a small or large screen. Then you will choose small or large storage. Then finally cellular or non cellular. You will then add Apple care or not for a final price 20% higher than the current models.

I don't think Apple will be updating the old iPad Pro Models, I think they will be discontinued.

I believe it will look like this.

iPad 7.9" (Mini) - Starting at $229 (same specs, reduced price)
iPad 9.7" 2018 - Starting at $329
iPad Pro 11" 2018 Starting at $649 (New Design, Face ID, A12X Chip)
iPad Pro 12.9" 2018 Starting at $799 (New Design, Face ID, A12X Chip)

If they keep the old iPad Pros - which I only think they would keep the 10.5" - it might look like this.

iPad Mini 4 - (same specs, reduced price) Starting at $229
iPad 9.7" 2018 - Starting at $329
iPad Pro 10.5" (same specs, reduced price) - Starting at $499
iPad Pro 11" 2018 - Starting at $699
iPad Pro 12.9" 2018 - Starting at $849

I don't think we will see crazy increases in price, this would just make users go for a laptop.

Thoughts?

I agree FrankySavvy. If they go with a $1500 price - I would probably go with a laptop instead....

If they release another 10.5 and sell it at iPad price (your quote of $499), I’d possibly jump. The only thing is the pencil? Would they also lower the price of the first pencil to $79? Would it be too confusing to have two pencils (not including that crayon)?

The thing is with pricing, iPPs already come close to $1500 with AC and accessories (I paid almost $1500 for WiFi only 256gb 12.9, AC, ASK and a pencil last year). Whatever I get, I am skipping the ASK and waiting on sales. That was way too much considering how quickly issues began cropping up.

Hoping prices are about the same, I don’t wanna pay to much. Could buy a laptop that does more.

And this is why they won’t breach the $1500 mark. Also, it’s important to remember that as the iPad Pro uses Apple’s own silicon rather than Intel’s it is cheaper. It also runs iOS rather than a full desktop class OS. Maybe in the coming years we will see their prices go up as Apple brings it even closer to being a full Mac replacement but for now I can only see a $100-150 increase at the most.

Bright side for me is that I saved $550 toward new iPad by not wanting 4 watch(or any Apple Watch till the battery life makes it useful, they are so far behind other watches)....so that’s the bright side...it WILL be pricey!

So right now the model wi+cell 10.5 pro 256 with AC and tax is $1,100, wow, so these will be close to $1,300 or so with same config I believe...like phone getting out of hand

Right now the current 12.9” iPad Pro maxed out with 512 gigs of storage and cellular costs $1,279 new. I am predicting that the upcoming 12.9” iPad Pro with Face ID, 512 gigs of storage and cellular will cost $200 more at $1,479.

This is my guess.

The more I consider it the more I'm unsure. The high-end tablet market is very wonky. The sub-$500 is basically all iPad but the success of Chromebooks in education is keeping the price low there. When you get close to ~$1k, you've got the new Samsung whatever, the Chrome Slate, and the Surface 6 which are all commendable hardware but very different approaches from the iPad and each other.
