I'm not trying to indicate that Apple should stop innovating, stop updating. My point is, is it realistic to see Apple upgrade RAM and drop a A13X chip in it THIS fall? Judging from history of iPad Pro releases, since 2015... it's been sporadic. Never a fall to fall update.
There isn't much history to go on. There have only ever been three generations, with 15 and 17 months in between releases.

I believe manufacturing probably will start in 2019. Whether or not the new models are released in 2019 or not is a different question, but if not 2019, then probably early Q1.
The topic was surrounding if it was just an upgrade bump of 6GB. Of course, that wouldn't entice 2018 iPP users... whether if Apple waited until 2020. If it was more to it... 5G, 2 camera setup (occasional, people use iPad for the camera), A13X (showing upcoming apps utilizing it). Then, obviously... it would be of interest to 2018 iPP users.
What I was thinking was it would get bumped to 6 GB... but Apple wouldn't mention that at all. However, besides the SoC update, they could also change the storage tiers, to include 128 GB at the entry level. That way they can justify keeping their entry level pricing high.

Remember the time people swore up and down, that we would NEVER see an iPad Pro launch at WWDC? Because WWDC was for "software news only"? Then it happened in June 2017.
Heh. I bought two new Macs that launched at that "software-only" conference, a 12" Retina MacBook and a 27" Retina iMac.

If your wife reads your posts, she won't be happy how you intend to pass her what is not good enough for you.
So I suppose she does not check this forum...
Honestly, she couldn't care less. All she wants is a replacement for the Air 2 she had before, since we gave that to the kids.

In 2014 I had an iPad Air 2, and she got my old iPad 2. Then in 2015 I got her an iPad Air 2 too, and the iPad 2 got passed down to my kids. However, recently they started complaining about the speed of the iPad 2, so this year we both gave our iPad Air 2s to the two kids. At the same time I bought an iPad Pro 10.5" for myself, when the 10.5" got discontinued and discounted. My wife initially seemed OK using an old MacBook Pro, but she discovered she prefers the iPad and would like something comparable to what she had before, but isn't in a big rush.

A 10.2" iPad with A12/A13 and 3 GB RAM would be a nice upgrade for her, and my old iPad Pro 10.5" with Smart Keyboard would be an even bigger upgrade.

You are lucky that your wife accepts so easily your decisions.o_O
As to the "OLD iPad Pro 10.5 with Smart Keyboard" I am since Wednesday a very lucky (!) owner of such an "OLD" equipment and cannot be happier.:p
In my humble opinion it is an astounding device and I wish everyone could call that OLD iPad his/her own and appreciate its quality as I do!
:) :) :)

There's probably a larger install base of 2015-2017 iPad Pro models than there is of 2018. Given they still haven't updated to the 2018 iPP now, I expect they're waiting for a (slightly or significantly) bigger upgrade.

I don’t think majority of 2017 or previous iPP users are not really interested in the feature-wise aspect of upgrades. Aside from users in the MR forums… the average iPP users will keep their current generation until some crazy bizarre situation comes up. And as @JPack pointed out.. non iPP users is what Apple looking to convert.

Because if 2018 is not a significant upgrade… I’m not sure what is, compared to previous generation.

I'm with you! Didn't want to spend the huge premium on the latest Pros, and had to choose between the Air and a refurbished 10.5 Pro. The Pro is cheaper, and in almost all ways better than the brand new Air. Got it last week and it's great!

I will be looking closely at the next Pro refresh just for myself (this one is more for the whole family) but this "old" Pro model feels really good right now.

Yeah, I get that. We look at history to guess the future. I've just been suggesting that the change in iPhone sales and the official branching of iOS into iOS and iPadOS, along with how much iPad activity we've seen elsewhere (new Mini, Air 3), that Apple is perhaps doubling down a bit on iPads as an area of revenue growth and therefore might be more inclined to update a bit more regularly. I may be completely wrong ;)

I must say though that I’m perfectly happy using my 10.5” Pro in the interim. iPadOS 13 with desktop browsing support + “full sized” 18 mm Smart Keyboard is a wonderful combination. The main issue is how long my wife can tolerate not having an iPad at all, as her preference is an iPad over the old Mac laptop (upgraded to 8 GB RAM and SSD) she currently is using.

The screen size of the iPad Pro 10.5” is great for this purpose, and the 4 GB and A10X is very responsive for multi-tab browsing. The 18 mm key spacing is also very comfortable, whereas in contrast, keyboards with smaller key spacing give me wrist pain. (The key spacing on the 11” is exactly the same as the 10.5” Pro, since their physical widths are very similar.) Yes, when compared side-by-side the 2018 iPad Pro is faster, but the 2017 10.5” is already fast enough to last several years of pleasant browsing. The increased horizontal resolution on the 11” in landscape mode is a bonus, but not a make-or-break feature.

Actually, if we do get that 11” Pro sooner rather than later and I pass this 10.5” Pro down to the wife, I’m a little bit scared she’ll destroy the keyboard. She has a tendency to use the iPads for cooking. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve wiped flour and chocolate off her iPad Air 2. I don’t think it would be pleasant experience trying to wipe that off the keys of the Smart Keyboard, or even worse, wiping that off the fabric undersurface. Hopefully she’ll use it like the MacBook, and keep it out of harm’s way when cooking, or in the very least will detach the Smart Keyboard when she uses the iPad for cooking.

New iPad Pros are pretty much guaranteed in the next few months. As soon as Tim gets word that I couldn’t last a week without an iPad and bought the 2018 model today he will approve the launch. ;)
Thanks for taking one for the team. :)

LOL - I hear you on this one. Have been debating about picking up a Mac Mini and know that if I do the same thing will happen and a new model will be released one day after my return period ends.

Why not just give her you’re iPP? Happy wife, Happy life? And wait for a new iPad Pro in the Fall or Spring... just a suggestion.

Unfortunately, I actually need to use the iPad Pro at work sometimes. The advantage the iPad Pro has over my 12” MacBook is Notability with Pencil support for highlighting of PDF documents. Also, as mentioned, I cannot use a keyboard for a 9.7” (or future 10.2” non-Touch ID model). The keyboards are just too small. Also, Smart Keyboards are way better than Bluetooth ones IMO.

I alternate between my 2017 iPad Pro 10.5” (4 GB A10X 64 GB) and 2017 12” MacBook (16 GB Core m3 256 GB) for work stuff. Actually, sometimes I carry both. Interestingly, the iPad Pro + MacBook with Sidecar support for dual screen usage weighs the same as a 13” MacBook Pro.

BTW, I expensed my iPad Pro purchase as a business write-off, and she already knew I could only realistically buy one per fiscal year. Luckily, the fiscal year just ended a few days ago, so I’m good to go whenever the new iPad Pro comes out.

If there are new iPad Pro's coming this year, I wonder if Apple will hold an October event where they announce the new 16" MacBook Pro and new iPad Pro's. Altho if they are just a processor update, the iPad Pro's could just get a silent update (altho I doubt it, my guess is there might want to demo the iPadOS on new iPad Pro's).

Rumors suggest that Apple will reveal the new 16" MacBook Pro in September.

That would be different, they usually announce new Mac's at an October event or WWDC. It is possible they do a September 2017 style event, where a lot of devices get updated. If that's the case I think we could see, iPhones, new AirPods (rumoured 3rd gen) Apple Watch, MacBook Pro 16" alongside the new Mac Pro and iPad Pros. If that's the case it will be a big event.

Umm... I don’t know. I think they separate it into two Fall events. But it all depends on if the new AirPods & iPad Pros are ready. Because they can always push products to the March Event, it’s hard to predict these things... with potentially 3 events that Apple can choose to announce products.

They can use the 2 Fall events to talk about their Apple TV+ offering... more deals that they landed. But one thing is ALWAYS certain... the iPhone will be released in the first fall event.

I forgot about Apple TV+ it will probably get some time as well. The iPad Pro’s have EEC filings which mean they are ready to launch, so I expect we will see them at some point soon. The new AirPods I’m not sure, we could see them later this year or even next year. Apple are also said to be working on a pair or over the ear headphones, they may launch this year or next year. There are a few devices that have been rumoured for later this year, however only the iPad Pros and new MacBooks have the EEC filings.

There is nothing the ecc filings that can be identified as new pros. More than likely the new iPads will be replacing the 9.7 entry level iPad.

Assuming those are filings for iPad Pros and not whatever the rumored 10.2" iPad is. (or it could be both, however those part numbers break down.)

Some rumors suggest its going into production in September making an October launch make sense-- I honestly don't know how long Macs are usually in production before they officially launch.

I'm sure Apple TV+ is the bigger one, but we have Apple Arcade coming too, right?

There are too many for it to just be a replacement for the 9.7” iPad. There are 2 new iPad models in the filing.

https://www.t3.com/news/buying-a-new-apple-ipad-is-about-to-get-much-much-tougher

“Cupertino-based company has filed five models with the Eurasian Economic Commission ahead of the tablets going on-sale. As well as three updated versions of previously-seen models, the filing includes two all-new tablets, AppleInsider reports.”

All these rumours of the new iPad Pro seem to be revolving around a 10.2" design ? So likely to replace the current 9.7' iPad ! What about the 11" iPad Pro which was released last year (2018) is that also gonna be upgraded this year ? There are no reports suggesting that the 11" iPad Pro is also getting replaced ?

The report cites a supplier out of China and says that the 2019 iPad Pro has “the possibility to be released with a triple lens.” ...

...The iPad Pro does not support features like Portrait mode with the rear camera. Presumably, the rumored new camera hardware for the 2019 iPad Pro would add features like that, as well as improve performance in areas such as augmented reality....

...We haven’t heard a whole lot about what’s in store for the iPad Pro lineup in 2019. The device just underwent a major design overhaul last year, so many had assumed that it would only receive an internal spec bump this year.

I guess this is possible— how likely I don’t know. But if they update the camera module, that gives Apple a more tangible feature update to talk about on stage. Given how often the iPad appears in tech demos for AR, it makes sense that Apple would put more advanced camera tech into the iPad Pro. (Though it does amuse me to imagine a marketing campaign called “Shot on iPad” :D )

Another thought— the original Macotakara report cites a comparison with the Galaxy Tab S6 which apparently has a dual lens camera on the back, suggesting that throwing a triple lens camera on the back of the Pro will give Apple an edge (spec-wise, anyways). This is interesting to me probably because I’ve never thought about Apple competing in the tablet market with Samsung / Android, but hey— it stands to reason that Samsung too may be looking at tablets as a potential area for growth. I guess I’ll go take a gander at their recent tablets. Competition is good, right?

From that January 2019 Bloomburg report:

The laser-powered 3-D camera could debut first on an upgrade to the iPad Pro currently planned for as early as spring 2020, according to one of the people. Apple isn’t expected to release a major iPad Pro update this year like it did in 2018. It typically upgrades the line in the second half of the year. Apple in the past has launched major new features on the iPad before the iPhone, including 4G internet connectivity in 2012.

This seems to support the Spring 2020 release suggestion... who knows. I’m just talking to myself on this thread at this point... It’s like I’m jonesing to upgrade my iPad Pro or something. :p

Anyone know of the best price for a 12.9 Pro?
Don't know of any amazing deals going on currently. A few weeks ago, they were $175 - $300 off depending on the model at Best Buy and Amazon. Haven't seen anything like that since then, but that's what I'd keep an eye out for.
