Not really
All I can think of nMPmini as a decorative unit.
...
I always wanted reliability and speed, and unfortunately external drives can't give you neither (and I speak from experience).
:)

On previous generation Mac, people typically use USB2.0 or Fire Wire for external drive connection and Gigabit Ether for NAS. Please look at the table for interface speed and drive speed. Even for single (non RAID) HDD, the speed of these interface was the bottle neck. So, people experienced that external drives were always slower than internal.
However, after USB3.0 and TB became available, this is not true.
For a single HDD, the speed of USB3.0 is no longer bottle neck. For SSD and RAID, TB or TB2 will not be bottle neck.

For reliability, I do not have such data, but I personally feel that NAS in good quality is much reliable than internal storage, considering environment for HDD.

I don't think you're going to get any of those answers from Apple before they launch. Except for #4 since we know RAM is replaceable.

http://www.apple.com/mac-pro/specs/

RAM and SSD are both listed as user accessible. I would bet that the GPUs are not replaceable but I can hold out hope. I've had 3 different GPUs in 2012 Mac Pro that I bought last December.

You both have valid points. Just saying that for a Pro machine, price starting from 3k and goes up, I'd like Apple to approach their customers with a fully-explained proposal/presentation of this machine, instead of having to rely on rumors and the iFixit tear down that will surely follow right after launch. Heck, we are in December (the launching month) and we don't even have a date yet.

They have covered a few things on their site now, but still leave many things for us to guess/hope/assume. As a potential buyer of this machine, I still don't have a complete picture in order to decide, and we are - as it seems - a few days before launch.

Oh well... enough with the complaints, I guess we'll see soon, one way or another.

"With Apple's new Mac Pro scheduled to launch this month but no exact availability date having been disclosed by Apple, many customers have been anxiously awaiting word on when the machines will be available for ordering. It now appears, however, that units are starting to make their way to Apple's retail stores, suggesting that a launch may be imminent. "

Your objections seem a bit misplaced if not irrational...

That's simply not true. The latest leaked benchmarks show the new 12-core is 20% faster than the 5,1.

There's no doubt you're pissed, but I'm still not understanding why. I'm a photographer as well, and I don't think I could have asked for a better solution than the nMP. It's a huge performance upgrade in every department vs. my 2009 Mac Pro... at least 2-3x the CPU performance (20% in your case), 5x the SSD speed, 2x the memory bandwidth, 10x (or more) the GPU performance. And I use a NAS for archived data already, so I don't miss the lack of drive bays.

I've had a drive fail on me both inside the chassis and out... and in both cases, it had nothing to do with where the drive was located.

Let's face it, the SATA2 bus in the 5,1 is 10-year old technology... and slow. Hopefully you're using some kind of PCIe storage now.

And a NAS is a perfectly good external storage solution for large volumes of media/data, particularly for someone like you with so many different systems that would likely benefit from sharing. I know... from experience :)
I so agree
I order a second drobo today Drobo D version
The S version that I had had some major issues with not butting up and loosing connection in the middle of work so thats why I went away from external drives also I had issues with two Lacie drives already where I lost the drives so I'm not happy with the external drives
in last 8 years I only lost one internal drive so thats why I do not trust externals
I know TB2 is 4 times fast then PCI slots but its still limited to drive speed so having that amazing speed its not really helping.
If the new Drobo will be reliable I will entertain nMP after it passes my test of running on MBPr, maybe than will I trust it 100%. This is so tough as we do over 200 events a year loosing any information is not an option. Drobo s let me down ones as well Lecie big drives so you understand my hesitation. I'm willing to try different drive options but since there is nothing from apple it worries me a bit that apple has no faith in seamless integration, because if they did had faith in it they will build one. :)

Could you clarify where they say the SSD is user replaceable? The RAM looks like it certainly will be, but the SSD might be soldered. Based on their animations, it looks like it it will be accessible, but nothing says that from what I can tell.

I'd REALLY like it to be user replaceable though :)

It looks user replaceable. Just like the rmbp and air is.

I have a feeling tomorrow is not the day. Maybe I have just lost all hope lol

Look under where it says "Storage".

I think it shows that I'm pissed at apple for not looking after Photo and video pros.
Seriously? Photo and video pros are exactly who the nMP is designed for. Not really sure what your problem is. As a 3D artist, it doesn't do anything for me yet, sadly, until my apps use OpenCL. But if I was a pro photographer or video editor, I'd have my American Express card sitting on the desk, waiting.

Do you think it will be tomorrow?

Considering tomorrow is the 17th, I would imagine anything later is getting awfully close to Christmas. If they stick to their Mon/Tues releases, then it's certainly not going to happen on Dec 24. So I say it's tomorrow, or Dec 31.
