Time, because it rules EVERYTHING!
Here are the new Sony handsets in a leaked video interview:

And the French talking people have CONFIRMED that the new Z5 5.5" Premium model WILL have a 4K SCREEN!! A worlds first for Sony.
Now I WOULD have said why oh why oh why, but when more and more phones are filming in 4K including rumours for the iPhone 6S doing this, then of course it makes perfect sense. Otherwise what's the point with 4K capable phone cameras? Because not many people have 4K TV's. Probably less have 4K computer screens.

The results from editing and downsizing to 1080P will show an improvement over a native 1080P phone's video. Also, for future-proofing a bit.

I thought I read QHD screen not 4k ..

Really don't see a need for 4k on a mobile, were reading the point of vanishing gains where like the jump from 100-300 dpi was noticeable, the leap from 300 - 450 less so and 450-600 even less. At 800+ dpi it might top out on dpi numbers but likely will be imperceptible difference to 99.99% of its users.

The issue then comes from power required to drive it and of course GPU / CPU peformance in intensive scenarios.

We already know the Z3+/Z4 was an utter disaster heat wise - even the Z2 & Z3 had issues in certain scenarios usually 4k recording.

If true it seems to me Sony are going to make a rod for its own back just to be first to market a 4K mobile, one with potentially greater damage to its users overall than potential gains.

I hope this isn't true ...

Exactly their is no 'if' about it, it is fact the new Xperia Z5 Premium will feature a 4K screen. The person in the video is a Sony executive in an interview, the video was uploaded by mistake and taken down, people saw it and managed to grab it, re-upload it.

And as I said, if you believe 4K screens are pointless then so are 4K cameras too, why shoot video that you can never fully appreciate as you don't have the screen to do so? I expect this will just be the first 4K mobile screen.

Damn .... Another feckin phone I now want !!!!!

I think the middle Z5 sounds very exciting. Compact is too mid-range, and Premium model is too high-range. The middle sounds perfect.

Also, that side-fingerprint scanner... very interesting.

Phone looks amazing...... Wonder how Sony will release it? Will they go the carrier route here in the US? Another Verizon exclusive? Or will it be an overseas release only?

My problem with Sony is that all their handsets have poor LCD screens, the cameras are never great (which is odd given how many camera modules they fit in other devices) and the hardware within them is always a bit out of date,

OK Sony have just made this REALLY INTERESTING!!

I've already counted the Moto X Style/Pure out simply because it's just going to be too similar to my G4, don't see the point in changing for such a similar phone.

Sony could make it interest, iPhone 6S could be interesting and maybe the Nexus 5.

I would hold off buying any Sony until they have been FULLY tested as they will,

1, all Z5 models will be using the overheating Snapdragon 810
2, have new camera sensors and behind the scenes software.

Now Sony from what I've seen has had a bit of a rep with the camera algorithms being rubbish, well poor anyway. Hopefully they have fixed it.
If not then never fear as the Z6 rumours will start next week haha.

That would be my biggest concern. The Z3+/Z4 is reportedly terrible for over heating .

So many Android phones coming out this year that are extremely close to being perfect. LG G4 without native NFC. Moto X Pure/Style without a fingerprint reader. Sony Xperia Z5 without 64GB internal storage. But it may be that the Z5 is close enough.

Sorry, what do you mean the G4 is without native NFC?

Fingerprint reader on the side is... That's going to be super irritating every time you want to just do something quick while the phone is on a table.
