Fingerprint reader on the side is... That's going to be super irritating every time you want to just do something quick while the phone is on a table.

The whole fingerprint reader thing is going to be a bit weird regardless.

I use the example of when my phone is in the windscreen dock for my car.

The docking station will obviously cover the back, and mine covers both sides. So the only way is on the front.

I've thought for a while that if Apple can nail Force Touch, then in 1-3 years we could see the iPhone lose the home button, and the fingerprint scanner could develop onto the Force Touch screen.

In short, nothing is 100% ideal right now, but it depends how you use your phone predominantly.

That's the first time I've heard or can imagine force touch being useful. Thumbs up if it becomes true!

The design seems to have got uglier. Z2 was the best followed by Z1 and then the Z3. The Z3+/Z4 went backwards with the ugly thick metal sides and now the Z5 seems to have got thicker. I hope the uglier design is because of a super large battery.

Owned all previous Z phones including the Ultra and whilst I consider the Sony the only true iPhone alternative in the Android world I keep getting reminded of the appalling customer service from the company and the weak screens. Half of my Sony phones suffered cracked screens that occurred for no reason.

In any case I will probably buy the premium version.

I think the matte look on the Z5 and the Compact look awesome.

If anything, I really hope they don't go with glass on them - I can't stand glass backs, they just crack so quickly it's pointless.

The Samsung S4 and LG G3/G4 are the only phones I've ever been able to go without cases for.

If the matt back resembles the materials used on the Z3 and Z4 tablets then it is a massive step back design wise. Just glad that the premium version looks like it still has a glass rear.

I hope to hear that the thickness is because of a 4000+ mamp battery.

The only thing that truly has one full days use is my iPad mini. Every phone including my iPhone 6 plus has half a days use max.

The camera on the new Z5 sounds very impressive, and that is a very important factor in a smartphone IMO. How many times has a great opportunity come up to take a pick of your kids, or girlfriend / boyfriend / mistress, or a cool sport scene, etc... And with a crappy camera or bad focus, or slow click, it just kills the moment.

On the software side, the Z5 family runs Android 5.1.1, and Sony says "stay tuned" about an Android M update. The good news for virtually everyone but the most die-hard of Sony fans, though? The company's Android skin is no more. Instead, the devices all run a virtually stock Android experience. Sure, there are some differences in iconography, but the general look-and-feel isn't too far from a Nexus device.

Well I'm impressed.

They've pretty much nailed it. Arguably the only potential sticking point is the 810 but otherwise it's a brilliant line up of phones.

I'm interested. Had a Z3 Compact earlier this year and loved so much about it, that I'm definitely considering Sony again.

Let's see how the reviews pan out!

Interesting new releases from Sony. The camera is supposed to be top notch, best in class for any smartphone, across all three of the new Z5 models, Sony supposedly went all out on the new camera. I like the main Z5 they announced, with a 5.2" 1080p screen, 2,900mAh battery, 3GB RAM, 810 SoC, and now the Sony UI, is said to be like Moto's, being 90% pure Android like a Nexus phone now, I would think a phone like this will get pretty sweet battery life, and be fast enough.

Spec's;
As far as specs go, though, the displays are pretty much the only things distinguishing the Z5 Premium from the Z5 and Z5 Compact. All three have Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 processor inside, up to 32GB of internal storage (expandable by microSD), high-res audio chips and "up to two-day battery life." That's a cute way Sony found to say "you only need to charge this one once a day." How they eke out that battery life differs of course, with the Premium having a 3,430mAh battery, the Z5 a 2,900mAh and the Z5 Compact a 2,700mAh. The only other differentiator is RAM: The Z5 Premium and Z5 have 3GB; the Z5 Compact only has 2GB.

Time, because it rules EVERYTHING!
Lets wait to see if any Chinese carriers place overheating warning messages on their stands next to these phones! Think they could have put a 1080P screen on the compact though? And maybe a 2K one on the standard Z5?

then it would be 1080P, 2K, 4K.

a better place
I'm skeptical until after its release considering heating issues on current Z3+. And will be interesting to see peformance impact differences on Z5 & Z5 Premium based on resolution of screen alone.

So would you say tech progress in phone screens have reached as good as we will ever need and they should push forward?
