If you have the 'Backup my data' option checked, it should -- though it is half baked and doesn't always work.

When you're signing into your Google account on the N5, you should see an option that says 'automatically restore my data' or something similarly worded. Just make sure you check that and connect to WiFi during the setup.

You could also backup your apps/data to your computer (or even Google drive) with something like Helium to be on the safe side.

Found 'backup my data'. It's checked. So that should be enough? Sign into my N5 and the apps will download automatically? Maybe look into helium?

The built in restore has worked for me on my past few migrations (Nexus 4 to Moto X to HTC One GPE to Nexus 5), but I always made a Helium backup just in case. Are you keeping the other phone? If you are and find that Google doesn't restore everything to your N5, you could always go back and use Helium later. Just make sure not to wipe it until you're satisfied.

There's nothing half baked about it. Nor do you need to back it up to your computer, it's already backed up to one's Google account.

Simply sign into Google, and all apps are automatically installed just as they were.
This works _every time_ without fail. On Wi-Fi or not, it couldn't be easier.

I'll have it while setting up my N5.

Can this also apply to Gmail? I have several accounts.

It doesn't always work the way it should in my experience.

Not sure what you're asking here. The backup/restore process is tied to your Gmail account.

Sorry you're having problems.

We have a BYOD policy at work that supports our choice of the Android models. Nexus 5, Galaxy Note 3 & S4. None of us have experienced any issues, it's been a great platform for our heavy usage.

I was under the impression that restoring my apps was via the Play Store. So how do I load all my Gmail accounts at once?

So apps will only auto download when signing in to Gmail using a nexus? I thought it could be done on any android device, the catch is you have to sign in ( gmail) when prompted during your initial set up/after a hard reset

I went through about 6 android phones last year and the nexus is the only one that auto-downloaded apps, and I always sign in using my google account during the initial set up.

I had no idea, now I know

----------

I had an iPhone 5S since launch day. Wanted to try Android out so bought a Nexus 5 a month ago. I sold my 5S yesterday.

The only thing I miss is the camera, but everything else is so much better that I can't really compare. Just the productivity improvements (quick example, uploading to dropbox WHATEVER I want from wherever from my phone...) really make a difference.

Love the Nexus, and love Android. I even managed to put it into my Apple ecosystem almost completely. The iPhone 6 will have to be SO MUCH better to make me go back.

I made the switch myself started with a Nexus 4, I recently bought an iPhone 5S ( yup because of the camera and missed iOS a bit, after 2 hours I got right back to my Nexus 5) and in all honesty the Nexus 5 camera is pretty close to the 5S I don't think I can differentiate between pix, Nexus 5 HDR+ takes pretty sharp picture, I also thought the retina display would be superior to the Nexus 5 ( It's not) my only complaint is the battery on the Nexus 5 I went ahead and rooted the device and noticed a huge improvement in battery life, would I give iPhone another shot absolutely But it needs to be a 4.7 Display and lets see if the camera can be stepped up on the next release, for now I'm sticking with the Nexus 5

Does anyone have this problem? Ive had it since the week I got my phone and its the most annoying thing ever! I wish there was a fix for it!

I can be texting in hangouts and out of no where (happens at least once every couple of days and at anytime), I will be in a convo and try to input text and nothing happens on screen. What I have to do is exit that convo and go into another one of my text convos with my friends, then exit that and go back into my first text convo and text will now input. Uhhhhh

I currently have a Nexus 5, Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 3, Nexus 7 & 10.

Each of these automatically download all my apps unless I choose to turn off that feature. It has to do with the OS, not the phone.

Any model phone with Android 4.x.x or higher has this feature.

The note 2, HTC One, Moto X (maybe, do not remember) all did not auto download. I know the nexus devices do, but it really was a mixed bag with other phones.

Another perfect example. The guy I work with got the Samsung Mega 2 days ago and it did not auto download. He was coming from an original Note.

What about the battery?

I can say it's got better battery life than my 5S. I think it's mainly because the Nexus 5 seems to make a much better power management when on low coverage areas. Also, it does stand by Data a lot better when on WiFi.

I've never been much of a gamer, so can't really tell what would happen when pushing the CPU for long periods of time.

Most users only upload videos/pictures to dropbox. Is there any other feature the Nexus has to convince me to leave my iphone 5S? I hear about inconsistent battery life and shotty camera pictures (different users have different experiences).

IMO the nexus 5 seems like the best android device out there, especially for the price.

I decided to sacrifice the camera because of everything else. I do miss it, but I can live without it. If the camera is a super must for you, then don't leave the 5S.

Good to hear a story that is completely opposite to mine. I have a 5S, bought a Nexus 5. My nexus 5 now is covered by dust. I keep it as a backup phone.

I guess it all depends on what one wants of his/hers device.

Nexus 5 due to arrive today. So I sign into Google and all the apps that I'm currently using on my First download automatically? (Awesome!) And this is limited to the N5 only?

I did some online research and it appears I'll need to add my multiple Gmail accounts individually to the Gmail app?

I had my apps auto download too on my gpe s4, so may be it is a "stock" android feature :p.

I used titanium this time though (doing a rom update) and regret it a lot. All my apps were force closing...had to reflash and use gmail restore instead.

It is not exclusive to the n5; All of the nexus products do this. Other phones just seem to be a hit or miss as to whether they actually work in that fashion.

You need to add additional accounts either directly through the gmail app or go to settings--accounts if you want to set up an additional gmail account with more options.

But each Gmail account must be added manually correct?

None of my apps transfered onto the N5. I did it manually.

Anybody using Google Voice for VVM? AT&T's app is not compatible.

That's because you have to select the checkbox to give permission during the first boot. If the Nexus has already been setup then you must go into settings to choose it.

As far as accounts:

During the first boot it'll prompt you to set some preferences and ask for your Google / Gmail account.

If you have more than one, choose the account you want the phone associated with. That will become your primary account.

Upon completing setup, you're free to add your other Gmail & other accounts. To do so simply click Settings/Accounts/Add Account.

It's done now that I manually downloaded each app but can you explain this just so I know for the future? I don't remember leaving any boxes unchecked during first boot.

I am. Works pretty well, except transcription sucks. Also, every now and then I will get random notifications saying "new voicemail", but when I listen to it, it is just the same voicemail I got a week earlier...

You can sideload the "official" AT&T VVM app (grab the apk from XDA). It's what I've been using since I got my Nexus 5.
