But doesn't doing so make is more like iOS, more 'locked down? And if they do lock out some functionality, aren't they then risking damaging the relationships with all the OEMs that have given them that 85% market share? They essentially would be exercising that clout with their partners first, in order to then have some influence with the carriers.

They make far more money from Android being used in some many other devices than they stand to make from a Nexus phone.

I sincerely hope the carriers are offering the Nexus 6 in exactly the same state as what one will get ordering it through Google, I just seriously doubt that will be the case. The carriers don't need the Nexus and I'm guessing your going to see some carrier bloatware on the carrier branded versions. I really hope I'm wrong though.
They would not have to lock it down as much as IOS .......they can still impart more control through faster updates and less need for OEM skins by adding default features.......

Not disagreeing with you for certain. The Android faithful would torch me alive for saying it but I think the best thing Google could do is exert a bit of control over certain aspects of Android. It can still be 'open' with being unnecessarily or excessively 'open'.

It's really a double-edged sword--the best part about Android can also be what causes some of the biggest headaches.

Yes! I have been hoping for a Nexus/Android phone for all carriers similar to the iPhone. When Google announced the Nexus 6, the first thing I wanted to know was whether there was going to be one or two versions. I did the same thing when Motorola updated their Moto X. Sadly, there's currently no international option for the Moto X. As someone who is planning on living abroad, I was looking for a phone that would work on any GSM network in the world. It's a real shame that Google hasn't made one.

I feel like Google is trying to find a way to update their phones (or just Nexus devices) like the way Apple is doing it. It's probably still a couple-few years away but I think Google will eventually bypass carrier intervention.

The devices should work over seas, what you would be missing is certain LTE bands, but UTMS and GPRS should work just fine world wide. The iPhone actually has 4 versions (A1549, A1522, A1524, A1586) the major differences are the supported LTE bands...

Yeah, sorry. To clarify, I was speaking with regards to two different models with different LTE bands: one for US and one for international. I wonder if I should just get a Nexus 5 or 6 via Google or Moto and just run without LTE in Europe/overseas.

so, preorders happen sometime today. anybody gonna get one?

I have a 6+ and have been using iOS phones pretty much exclusively since the iPhone 4. I dabbled with Android here and there over the years but never stuck with the phone more than one day.

I'm really liking the specs on the Nexus 6 and Android L looks awesome so I think i'm going to order one and force myself to try it out for 10 days. iOS is great but I think I need to try something new. I'm going to stay objective and really give it a try for 2 weeks. I think Google's cloud services blow away Apple's (except for iCloud backup) and some of the misgivings I've had about Android seem to have been fixed in the KitKat and Lollipop releases. The only thing I'm really "worried" about is the app support but I think that my most used apps on iOS are also on Android. looking forward to trying it out!

I used to think my Nexus 5 was the perfect size, and when news that the Nexus 6 was going to be gargantuan, I felt a little let down. But having actually seen and played with the thing, I've gotta say I'm coming around, and fast.

At least I was able to add the 64GB cloud white one to my wishlist. Don't have the funds to by it now any way.
