In a kind of unexpected bit of news, I have returned my Pixel.

Had the pleasure of using it for just under a week and really did enjoy my time with it.

The reason I've returned it then?
Well one thing I've learned from having both the Pixel and iPhone 7 Plus is that I don't need 2 high powered / high end devices like this.
I don't switch between them, nor do I have any desire to use one for one week and one for the next. It just isn't the way I like to use my device. Plus it isn't easy seeing as the majority of my chats are WhatsApp and they don't migrate over from iOS to Android and vice versa.
So yeah, not ideal.

But also, I really don't like the size of the normal Pixel. Even though it's bigger than the iPhone 4.7 screen it doesn't really feel that much with the on screen buttons. Just cannot forgive that design decision with all that wasted bottom bezel. There isn't even a speaker there for crying out loud.
At least with the iPhone you have the home button there to actually make you feel like the bezel is worth something (kinda :p )

Obviously, I knew this before I bought one, I held it and played with one so I knew exactly how big it was and the screen - bezel ratio.
But in real world use, I just don't like a phone this small. I've well and trule been converted having used the BlackBerry Priv most of the year, and now my iPhone 7 Plus.

As I mentioned in my initial impressions, the screen is also a bit of a problem for me. It is literally retina blurring, even with the brightness down.
If I switch to SRBG mode, it is too muted, to the point where I would rather have my retinas burned out haha.
There needs to be a middle ground, which could come in an update and hopefully does as soon as.
It made using the phone annoying for me, as there was no way I could have my display setup in a way that suited / pleased me.

I loved the results from the camera, took some fantastic shots and it is quick and reliable. Lens blur was a definite issue which I could have done without but again, it is early days and an update could rectify this. The actual camera interface was horrible though, as with iPhone. I always tried to shoot with HDR+ on, rather than auto but it was additional touches to get this mode on. Little bit finicky for my liking.
Again, an update could rectify this.
What an update won't fix is this viewfinder for 4:3 ratios. I literally hate it. But the problem I've got personally is that I have well and truly been spoiled with the Lumia 950/XL camera. In all honesty, this camera is the closest to the Lumia's I have used for quality, and it is faster in low light and also more reliable. But the Lumia still takes better shots outdoor (where I tend to take most of my photos) and it gives me a 16:9 shot when shooting 20 megapixels.
There's just no comparison for me.

So that's basically the main reasoning for me. The other thing and I hate to say it because it literally is just something that I know will probably be exclusive to me, but it's boring.
It is literally the Android iPhone. And to me, that's not a good thing. It's a good thing when it comes to speed, fluidity, and OS polish (which this thing has in spades), but it just isn't when it comes to design, lack of features that should be standard (looking at you memory card slot) and price.
The price actually isn't a problem for me, and I don't mean that in a 'I have loads of money' way - coz christ knows I do not! Haha. I mean it in a it doesn't bother me that it's at this price point. It did at first, but it truly is a great phone for a large majority of people if they gave it chance.
It's just not the phone for me when I have my iPhone 7 Plus as my main device.

I think had this phone come before the 7 Plus I could have easily bought an XL and I would be keeping hold tight of it. But I don't want an Android iPhone when I have an iPhone. If that makes sense.

For me, this also isn't the definitive Android device. I think I will always give that award to the Note 7. Obviously without it's problems and just taking it for what it was prior to the issues. The Pixel just comes no where near it. The design of the note, the feel in the hand, the stylus capabilities, the waterproof, wireless charging, memory card slot and dat coral blue!! Pixel can only dream of being as sexy and well equipped.

It was a fun ride, and I still hold the Pixel in high regard, but I will be going back to my Lumia 950 for a second device as the camera and size is more suited to my tastes than the Pixel was. That with the Iphone 7 Plus was the winning combo I should never have tampered with, but temptation always gets the better of weaklings like me haha and it was nice to experience the Pixel for the time that I had it.

Apologies for rambling, but that's me signing out of the Pixel club! I know you will all continue to love yours and will still be looking in here for the amazing photos I know you'll no doubt be capturing! :)

Hey you gave it an honest shot! Not all phones are a good fit for all people.
Respect that you didn't feel the need to trash a phone you didn't want! :)

The reason the display burns your eyes is because its using NTSC coverage and the sRGB mode is not even as accurate as the Nexus 6P.IMO it would be a very noticeable difference if you use color accurate displays simultaneously with that phone which is why you had trouble with that part

I also think the Galaxy S7 and Note are the definite Android devices, I will be very anxious to see what the Pixel 2nd gen does. They are off to a great start that is for sure

Do you guys feel that the XL would have the staying power to keep me satisfied with it for 2 years vs. something like the LG V20 that has a lot more bells and whistles? I had been considering the 7+ but I'm still not completely sold on iOS and the direction Apple has been going recently. I'm a month away from my Note 4's contract being up and am going to be pulling the trigger on something. Halp!

The Pixel XL is more than just the sum of its parts. It has the best camera on a smartphone, and will get all the latest updates immediately. Sure, the V20 and S7 Edge have more bells and whistles, but the Pixel is directly from Google and will be supported heavily because of it.

After a week of use I can honestly say the Pixel has become my favourite android smartphone I've ever owned. I don't say that likely.

As Jamezr and others have said, the Pixel is more than the sum of its parts. It feels as smooth and as hassle free in day to day operation as the iPhone. It's the closest experience across both platforms I've ever had.

The build quality is fantastic, the design is much better in person and actually feels lovely in the hand. Performance has been fantastic. Had no overtly hot moments where the device has inexplicably warmed up and for the very first time Android Software across the board for me has felt consistent. Performance wise and battery wise so far it's all been utterly consistent and that was something we used to associate more with iOS and we had grown to expect hiccups, occasional bouts of heat and throttling and inconsistent and random battery life. Where the pixel seems to correct this.

It's just fluid and solid. Yes it is very expensive and I think Google's limited release and pricing is a bit of a mistake as it will prevent more users from experiencing the device and Android as Google intended Android to be. That being said, no regrets buying here.

For once and this is very rare for me to say, I feel I have an Android keeper (at least till the Pixel 2) and won't be jumping ship every few weeks like I have been doing for last number of years.

Highly impressed overall.
Since you've also owned the HTC 10 I'm interested in knowing in what ways you prefer the Pixel to the HTC 10. I'm loving the HTC-10 but I will always want to know what I'm missing. My curiosity is through the roof. After so many years on iPhones with modest little wallpaper customizations, I've lost my mind.

I've been messing around with my HTC 10, trying to get it exactly the way I want it and I mostly succeeded except for not being happy how the default contacts app looks and feels. It's an ugly brute that makes me respect iOS and Samsung more.

I've tried two launchers in the space of fifteen minutes and really messed with my own head. For about ten minutes I had my phone turned into a recreation of a Star Trek interface. It was crazy. I find myself wondering if my experience with launcher experimentation would work better on a Pixel because I did find HTC Sense UI kept asserting itself and Total Launcher did crash when I was trying to customize it. I think the Star Trek Launcher extension for Total Launcher was adding too many shades of complicated on top of everything else.

Every iPhone user should mess around with Android at least once in their life and not on a Samsung, either, unless there's an easy way to override Touchwiz. I wouldn't have believed how crazy a phone can get had I not seen it and done it to my poor HTC 10. I never see any of this stuff around me. Nobody I knows plays around like this with their phones. Actually most of my friends and family have iPhones. Not even my husband the techie plays around like this too much because he needs his phone for business too much to be messing around for fun on it.

He is looking at me like o_O girl, what are you doing? For a couple of days I brought shame to my family by encasing my phone in a TPU Pokeball case with a Pokemon theme applied, making Pokemon noises for notifications and all of my icons were turned into apples.

This morning I had a spinning world Live Wallpaper for awhile but that seemed to eat my battery and I still couldn't figure out how to get my phone to stop yelling Pokemon sounds at me. Fortunately it was not too loud and only for notifications. I had no trouble silencing them but turning them back to something less Pokemonnish seemed to elude me.

The Star Trek one was really a mess. That was loud. Every time I touched any icon I was making Star Trek noises and I couldn't find a way to stop it. My settings indicated I had every sound turned off and yet there they were, blaring sounds from the bridge of a starship. I had to get a refund on that launcher and the accessory packs I bought for it. I would need hours and a tutorial to figure my way to customizing that.

I am in such trouble. I'm supposed to be working on the house so we can complete some projects. But I'm playing around on the phone. I'm setting such a bad example for the kids. :(

^ I don't mind Sense and in many ways it's become ever closer to stock with many elements ripped straight from stock, however there are still many elements in Sense that stray too far for my liking or at least preference.

I just find stock android more coherent aesthetically.

That being said the audio settings and equaliser on the HTC 10 are much better than the pixel, the ability to customise audio experience listening to frequency tones and the higher quality DAC means headphone output on the 10 is better than the pixel.

However I prefer the size of the pixel and the rear finger print scanner on it, the fact that HTC decided to put the capacitive buttons and finger print scanner uncentered alignment wise on the bottom chin (even though it's only slight) irked me. I know it's a silly little thing.

The HTC 10 is a fantastic device. Really when saying I prefer the pixel, it's the pure stock compared to near stock experience, it's the feel in the hand (the pixel feels a little narrower and for more more comfortable to hold). I also have prefer the flush camera module.

Battery wise I got much the same, display wise both have great displays, build quality both feel great and are solid devices.

It's more small personal preferences, but as I say there are elements of the HTC where you get a little bonuses such as QHD LCD which is more colour accurate than the Pixel, the better speaker arrangement and higher quality audio DAC with better audio equalisation and optimisation options.

But as I wrote previous it's the sheer smoothness of nougat on the Pixel and stock cohesive gui that for me make it a more enjoyable device for me.

It's all just a matter of taste and personal preferences really.

Wow, you have never had an Android phone before? Such a shame to only stick with an iPhone because these can do so much more , but if they make people happy, so be it. Funny to see that you are like a kid in a candy store with it lol.

Battery life continues to impress me on the Pixel XL. I get over 6 hours SOT consistently.
I never worry about battery on this phone......I just use it because it will more than last the whole day. I don't have anything disabled it tweaked in anyway. It is just as it was out of the box except for my apps.

Got my Pixel yesterday. So these are my own takes after just 24 hours:

  • Build is sturdy if unspectacular. I'm fine with that. I think it's a very comfortable phone to hold. I don't mind the bezels at all, they add balance and give my fingers a perch to hold it in landscape.
  • Phone is faaaast. Not quite ios smooth but easily the slickest of any Android phone available today. No stutters, no lag. Apps stay in memory.
  • Camera is fantastic! I have an IP7+. Pics are mostly even except for low light. iPhone wins.
  • Chrome still sucks. It's faster than previous iterations but still a bit clunky, and I find pages aren't formatted correctly too often. Any suggestions for browsers out there? I enjoyed Sammy's on the Note7.
  • Can't comment on battery life just yet. Too new and I won't put it down.
  • Fingerprint sensor is as good, maybe even a hair better than iPhone's.
  • Single speaker is loud but hard to go back to monospeaker after IP7. I use my phone for a lot of conference calls, difference is noticeable.
I agree with those that say this is the closest Android has come to their own iPhone. It's snappy, intuitive, perfect out of the box. If you want more...still Android.

Well I borrowed an early generation Samsung phone from my husband a few years ago. It was awful. So I stuck to iPhones but kept an eye on the Note series after Note 4 came out. I wanted the S-pen. My husband kept talking me out of getting any Android phones. But I was always curious. Note 7 was the one that made me determined to break away from iPhone exclusivity at long last. So I went ahead and told my family I was going to make that leap.

My husband didn't want to be left out so when a BOGO deal for Note 7's came up on AT&T he got one too and to everyone's shock he went completely over to Android. He's more of a kid in a candy store than even I am, in his own way, when he has time. It took him by surprise how much he enjoys Android because he really hated it for many years and talked some serious smack about the versions he's used. But he's a smart guy who knows to keep his mind open about these things and give them a chance.

I think he's surprised because I'm the one finding things he hasn't heard of like Wire (that I read of on this forum) because he is so busy with his career these days and doesn't have time to discover things like he used to. He's used to being the one showing me new tech stuff and even now it's hard to find things he hasn't at least heard of. But every now and again I get to be the one to make the big find! It is fun.

Because of the Note 7 recall, I went from never owning an Android phone to owning two Note 7's, a Galaxy S7 (sadly defective and prone to overheating) and my S7 Edge (great phone) and now the HTC 10 all just since the end of August. It boggles my mind what they can do and how one Android phone can be so different from another one not just in hardware features but in how the manufacturer chooses to modify Android.

That's why I'm so curious about how the Pixel differs from the HTC 10 (thanks @MRU) and how it differs from Samsung phones. When you've known just one single way of experiencing a smart phone for so long and then see this completely different world that you've ignored, it's...well, words fail me. I just know I'm happy.

The thing I notice most are things that are not specs like the hand off between networks is fast, the connection is faster, the camera is quick, the UI is consistent, it never gets warm, and I don't worry about charging it. The phone really just works well without futzing and it'll work even better once beans makes a ROM for it. This really is just a nice phone

Just a tip, try taking pics in HDR+, vs HDR auto. Night time pics are much better. HDR auto does not do full HDR +.

Yeah beans roms are fantastic. Wonder if it will lose the Google assistant though?

Right now the biggest weakness Pixel has compared to IP7+ for me is Chrome. Any good Android browsers that support ad blocking?
