Really? I would think at some point they would end up releasing a dual cpu setup.

I agree with handsome pete that this is highly unlikely. With Intel struggling to make much progress with increasing single threaded CPU performance while continuing to raise Xeon prices, Apple appears to be betting that GCGPU is a more cost effective and promising way to continue increasing performance for a broad range of applications.

I doubt it, the haswell EP CPU next year will have a new socket, ddr4 ram, usb 3.0 built in, larger cache and up to 14 cores. The broadwell EP after is 18 cores!

Ah, then I guess it would make sense to stick with single proc setups. I guess what really matters to me is how this hex core nMP performs as a workstation. Hopefully 3D apps will start utilizing the dual GPU setup...

I wish that too but 3D apps takes SOOOO long to implement stuffs, probably Mac software will see an update earlier then Windows software cause of the nMP.

I don't understand the point of reviewing a configuration that can't be purchased. Why not do this test with the actual 8-core available from Apple?

I gave up on Digilloyd after his remark regarding the Sony A7r shutter "issue" and his comment on Twitter regarding a person who tried doing a scientific test about the vibration and how it compares to Nikon D800 or Sony NEX 7 if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of his either, his blog has become a shill piece for OWC, probably because they give him products to review for free (which explains the OWC 8-core review). Some of the stuff he writes makes me groan.

I certainly agree with you on that. On the other hand, he's the only one who's doing the kind of head-to-head comparison of photography applications that I'm interested in seeing. He's now added the 6-core to the mix, and in most tests it's very close to (sometimes better than) the 8-core. The 8-core did manage to best the 6-core by about 10 percent on a Lightroom import.

I can't even find this 8-core upgrade on OWC's website, nor is there any pricing available.

OWC stated in a comment on their website that they would eventually have processor upgrades available.

By "processor upgrade" do they mean selling units with the upgraded processor in them or just a DIY type kit? Because if it's the former, then you have to wonder how much you'd really end up saving after OWC gets their cut. If it's the latter, then that's something we can already do through places like newegg.

Why is that? The point of doing it was proof of concept that the nMP processors could be swapped out. It was a pretty big deal actually.

It's not silly that OWC is doing that testing, but it is quite silly that the other guy is benchmarking against that instead of a production system. He's an OWC shill.

He may be a shill, but I'm not sure I'd say that with this instance where it's something OWC doesn't even sell. ;)

Or at least, not YET. [dramatic chipmunk]

He added the 6-core, so that's a bit better, but it's still basically an ad for a unreleased product.. :D
