If they update the iMac should they not just mimic the thermal/cooling system from the iMac Pro?

Yes that would be the best design for an AIO design but the chances are slim to none. It's difficult to say what the actual selling point on the next updates are besides news chips. Rumors are a display change which could mean many things. It will be an interesting fall.

If Apple is not waiting, by definition why the new imacs aren't available ?
I didn't say Apple isn't waiting, I just think they're not going to release a new iMac that will hurt sales of the iMac Pro, such as similar graphics for $2,000 less. They're probably waiting because the current iMacs still fit in their lineup where they want them to fit, despite all of us screeching for updated specs and a cheap iMac Pro-like iMac.

I'm still predicting new Coffee Lake 6-core iMacs in the next couple of months with Polaris 500X series.

Vega iMac non-Pros will be next year.

So your prediction is a new set of iMacs in a couple of months and another new set of iMacs next year? Have you been at the rum cake again? :)

Would a display change mean a necessary re-design of the inside at all that would allow them to incorporate the imac pro cooling system into it or does that not effect that?

I have a feeling there will be a new imac Pro spec upgrade that will allow it to stay distanced from the normal imac.

This would allow the imac to have the imac pro cooling system or at least a cpu upgrade, but allow the imac pro to still have some appeal that would make it worth owning.

Even if that's true, you're looking at probably late 2018 or more likely sometime in 2019 for a new iMac Pro (if any, some here have predicted there will not be another iMac Pro, that it is just a stopgap until a new Mac Pro). I still don't see Apple significantly closing the gap between the iMac and the iMac Pro anytime soon, with the iMac Pro just having shipped in December. It WILL be interesting.

There was no "2016 iMac".
Perhaps there's going to be no "2018 iMac".
Perhaps Apple has relegated the iMac product line to the same "we'll update it when we feel like it" attitude they have towards the Mini and Mac Pro...

There will be a 2018 iMac, I'm 95% sure. There is way too much at stake here, given it's one of the biggest CPU upgrades of the decade.

There was no "2016 iMac".
Kaby Lake wasn't available until 2017 and the 2015 iMac already had Skylake, that is likely the main reason there was no iMac refresh in 2016. Though you could argue Apple should have done a minor Thunderbolt 3 + GPU refresh in 2016, Coffee Lake is out now in 2018 and there is much more to gain with a 2018 refresh.

Probably will not have any effect. Display could mean just a new display or it could actually mean an actual new redesign which could mean many things including a redesign being slimmer with worse thermal performance. Remember every single redesign across the board from Apple trends towards slimmer, less upgradability and less IO so if this happens to the iMac don't be surprised it has the same fate as the Mac Pro, Macbooks...etc. Redesigning the regular iMac could also help further separate it from the iMac Pro if they gimp it down with IO and make it slimmer. It could end up being closer to a giant Macbook Pro in design but who knows for sure.

i hope for a 2mm thinner at the edge and at the back 25% less volume hahahah
Apple should remove the fusion drives at least for the 27” and redesign for a better colling,25% reduced bezels and 1000 nits so this way you can remove tha room lightning . Thats a true all in one, a pc and a light for your room
Oh and better speakers,,the macbook pro in 2 years already upgrade the speakers 2 times and its getting embarrassing to have almost the same level on a 15” mbp the 27” imac

There is no way you’re going to get 1000 nits.

I know you’re joking but some people have actually asked for this for HDR support. It’s possible but it would cost a fortune.

So no 1000 than 2000? :)) i will light up my entire country with my imac. No more energy from the Russia needed
[doublepost=1532013819][/doublepost]I think for hdr we need microled because oled is a no go for this kind of display

Apple may update the iMacs this year, but if they did all it would be is a processor update and maybe a minor update to the graphics. Nothing beyond that.

It is also possible they won't update it until early 2019.

Smaller bezels could so be done...was looking at the iMacs at the Apple Store today and considering that. But I'd be fine with the same bezel size if they maybe put FaceID in there...bugs me that the iMac has no biometrics like the rest of their devices.

I don’t care about a new design really, I like the current one.
All I want is standard SSD and user-upgradeable RAM.
You can upgrade it in the 27". Assume you are referring to the 21.5" or iMac Pro?

Figure all they could bring to the iMac is Face ID. Would love an external Touch ID keyboard, just not sure it will happen.

Are we ready for throttling party? If Apple just put Intel’s 8th gen. cpus without redesigning next iMac’s cooling unit then I’m %100 sure that we’ll see throttling issues again.

Just an example, Noctua NH-L9i is great cpu cooler for small form factor pc. It coped very well with 65w tdp cpus. Even some people tamed delidded i7-7700k with this cooler. However this time it can’t handle “65w” i7-8700 or even barely handles i5-8400. So, what happened to its magic. Actually, nothing. Intel just lies everybody about cpu tdp values now. Power consumption of i7-8700 reaches up to 128w!! AMD just kicked intel’s a** so hard with Zen architecture and intel has been releasing ridiculous cpus for the last 2 years. They are in panic and fooling around. Look at X series, 8th gen cpus tdp lies, i7-8086k fiasco (they advertised it as a 5ghz cpu but then said it was overclocked, then it turns out that cpu is not different from i7-8700k and then it turns out they used a cooler at a size of mini fridge and they hid it under the desk) and lastly 28 core cpu fiasco (it’s a rebranded of an existing xeon cpu). Btw, don’t forget meltdown and spectre; intel had found it in 2012 but did nothing because they thought the system is so complicated that nobody would understand it.

If I were buying an iMac at the next refresh, it'd probably be an i5-8400, i5-8500, or i5-8600, perhaps one of the first two. If Apple adopts the i5-8400 as the new entry level, that would actually make for a very decent machine.

BTW, I returned my i7-7700K for fan noise, and got the i5-7600. It should be noted though that the 7700K didn't seem to throttle much. It was just loud. I just hope the i5-8400 isn't as loud. Some seem to suggest that the i5-8400 runs cool enough, but this review suggests otherwise:

Maybe it depends upon the individual chip, because this review suggests the i5-8400 is very cool:

Or perhaps it relates to the testing method, as the two tests have drastically different results for the i7-8700K too.

Apple did put that 295X, that was hot and throttling...now Apple put i9 into the MBP...lets see whats next
