I think the debate would clearer if we had a view of which market segment Apple is going to address because for me it is not clear:

21.5 - Home: Edu, home-office , entry level
27 - Work: more demanding applications (like running microsoft poorly optimised Word, haha) photo, some video, development
iMP - High end work - Research, higher end video, photo and 3D modelling/rendering, ML, development

There is overlap between these segments and the biggest unknown is if the 27 iMac will lean more towards the low end or more to the high end. That will decide how the case will look like.

Personally, I do not think that loosing low end iMP sales to high end iMac configs bothers Apple at all. We should also remember that the processors in the iMP is a year old (or more) and of course can be slower than this autumns processors.

Apple event just announced for 12th september. Maybe we could see updated iMacs , probably coffee lake in higher up 5k models with 570x/575x/580x graphics, true tone display and hdr compatibility. I think that the true redesign will come next year with cannon lake architecture and ddr5 RAM alongside new modular Mac Pro.

I wanted to ask also is it possible that HDR support will come to 2017 iMacs via software update?

Realistically I think there is close to zero chance imacs or minis get even a mention on Sept 12. But the next event up may be a different story Oct-Nov ish.

September events are not for Macs. Plain and simple.

I don't know. With the latest report that Mac sales have slowed, along with the talk around here with a large number of people waiting to upgrade, it would be a huge missed opportunity to not at least give us a peek at what they have in mind.

An event just for Mac Minis, an updated iMac and entry level MBA is way too short to be its own thing in my opinion.
Throw in iPads which has been a rumor. Last years iDevice event was nearly 2:30 hours. Just could not see the Macs make an appearance unless it is just for a spec bump mention. But there is rumors of new MacBooks, MacBook Airs, Mac Mini and a bumped iMac. Never could fit into an event with iPhones, Apple Watch, AirPower, AirPods.

True, but a september event for just updated iPhones (won’t take long) and a new watch is too short. AirPower will be a 2 min job, and the ‘new’ AirPods are going to be minor if they are updated at all.

Well, if they cut out the "patting ourselves on the back" sections, the "feel-good" movie shorts and a few of the pointless demos, then they'd have more than enough time. It's time to show everybody what Apple's been working on. Talk about the future, not about how you became an insanely profitable company. People are losing faith in the company, bring us back in and get us excited again, thats all we want.

Are you kidding? They will drag this out till everyone is bored out of their minds!

We'll have Jony Ive giving us a deep and meaningful reason behind the choice of the shade of gold for the iPhone Xs that only his mind understands. And to decipher that **** must take an hour at least.

Plz not just a cpu bump,we need a better cooling inside too for those 6c cpu

Better cooling exists inside the iMac Pro - at the cost of losing the RAM access door. It would help the average selling price greatly for Apple.

Traditionally the Mac hardware update happens in October. September is for iPhones and iPads.

holding out hope they do at least a spec bump to current processors on the iMac at the 9/12 event so I can buy one

Simple spec bumps will be press release events - they won't go anywhere near iPhone events. Given the CPU timings recently I don't think we'll see any press release bumps and everything will be revealed in an October event given the increased likelihood of redesigned hardware - MBA and Mac Mini could see redesigns while MBP nTB could be going and MB could see 3rd gen keyboard.

Do not conflate the iMac and the iMac Pro, they are two separate product lines and Apple is not concerned with an 8-Core 9900K bumping up against the iMac Pro. That scenario is maxing out the iMac to maybe get it to meet the bottom of the iMac Pro line...the Pro is way more than just the CPU.

In addition, there are many people who would love a high-end iMac but can not afford the $5K price. My max budget is $3K and I’d imagine a 9900K iMac would fit that price range. In my case, Apple is gaining a customer. I could never buy an iMac Pro but Apple currently has no other 6/8 core desktop option so I’m sitting here waiting for something that fits my needs and budget...

Apple doesn't understand that those who make music.....90% of us can't afford the $5,000 imac Pro or Mac Pro.

The Base imac is what a lot of people can afford and are using.

They seem to think that anyone wanting to make music somehow has $5,000 laying around to start making music with.

They have so much money they don't realize how little the rest of us have.

I wish one year they would cater to music makers and Logic Pro X users.

So many people only use mac because Logic Pro X is exclusive to Macs and if we could use it on PC standard without wine or boot camp......We would, and save a ton of money.

Apple doesn't seem to care or respect people making music anymore.....they will focus on final cut pro and video editors all day every day....but never music people.

It's weird and annoying.

We need a good CPU & good cooling....stop gimping those apple. please.

I’d say the 2017 i7 iMac is a great machine for music production. If it had a 6-core or 8-core option I would buy one, as my projects eat up my current quad-core, but I can’t justify a $5K machine.

Apple will drag out the intro of those new iPhones for at least 30 minutes, new iPad 30 minutes, Watch 30 minutes, intro and recap plus air power and any other bits 30 minutes. I think the Mac event will be separate in October once Intel lifts the embargo on the 9th-Gen CPUs. Apple could then spend around and hour and a half with those three (mini, MacBook and iMac) and then give a quick sneak peek at the Mac Pro.

I have to say that I find the standard iMacs with i7 processors plenty good for music production.

I am quite heavily into sound design based music and I use plugins with my own patches with many granular and spectral plugins. I regularly run these in Logic on my 2015 27 inch i7 iMac in sessions with 30 + tracks and 60 to 70 odd plugins going (not super heavy loads but still pretty substantial). I'm rarely hitting CPU spikes with working like this with the right buffer size. I do have issues from time to time with some patches i make with some VSTs, but this doesnt happen too often.

I had thought though that in general that the regular iMacs were sufficient for the needs of most people involved in music production. Each to their own though, and that's just my perception and experience.

It is except for the i7-7700k is too much for that build in terms of heat and getting that fan going. Fan = noise and can be annoying when trying to make music. But yea I've already committed to "settling" for the 2017 27" imac + 16 GB Ram + 512 GB SSD + i7-7700k if there is no release in 2018.

I'm not waiting until 2019.

You probably know better than me. I could be 100% wrong. It just seems like they could be better build with Logic Pro X and making music in mind....at least going forward with the newer models. The imac Pro airflow with 2 fans is a nice step forward, and hopefully should be in the new imacs within a year.

* What kind of music do you make? I'd be making multiple genres, but I definitely wouldn't want a base model. Seems weird to pay $2,000 for something so underpowered.

even 1k is absurd for me . 5k i'm better doing other business unless can get income 10x 5k per per 6 month to cover up the cost.

True! I’m hoping when we do get the spec bump, they improve the cooling solutions. There is a lot of empty space in the current iMac design (esp if they take out the HDD). Either copy the iMP or design something similar with two fans.

I think if Apple were to release an update, it will mimic what they did with the MBP. No event at all, just a silent update. I think the September event is for iPhones/iPads only with maybe a roll out of the new inexpensive 13" laptop.

I don't think we'll see any other media event after September, and certainly not in November, that's just too late for the holiday season

Don’t crush my dreams of a full redesigned iMac with proper cooling!

Do you not think iPhones, iPads, Watches, and a few smaller bits, plus maybe the odd Mac update is too much for one September event?
