Well, the A chips have never been used in real world situations where the CPU was stressed for an extended period, like what you would have if you're rendering a 30 minute HD or 4K video.

It's possible the A13 (or whatever it would be in a desktop) would be cooler than an intel chip, but since they've only been used for dinky apps in phones, and none of those apps give it any real prolonged stress test, we have no idea what their actual thermal performance would be in a full fledged computer environment.

I would expect a dedicated CPU development for the Macs and not a re-use of phone chips

If the chips are scalable with wattage, why not? I'll gladly take the industry leader in mobile chips there before another Intel m-processor variant, thank you very much.

Are there new Intel CPUs coming in 2019 suitable for the 27” iMac? Cause 9th gen processors are already out for a while. Or perhaps Apple is waiting for new GPUs from AMD.

With the Mac Mini getting 6 core processors, it stands to reason that the next iMac will, even if there isn't a redesign i think the updated iMac will be a beast.

If the Mini got 6 cores I’m hoping for an 8 core iMac. At least as a 27” BTO model.

The new iMac is going to be more expensive that's for sure, especially if they remove the RAM access on the 27".

Why are you so sure?

Of course not an INTEL variant designed by Apple but an A13 variant designed for Macs with much larger batteries, thermal possibilities in mind. Like what they do for the watch or the iPad Pros. A specific development for mobile Macs and desktop Macs. That would rule.

Someone noted that there are still some 9th generation CPUs not yet released that correspond with the SKUs currently used in iMacs. Not sure what the case is with AMD's GPUs, but drivers for them are said to be shipping in the next point update of Mohave (10.14.4).

So I think WDCC could be the date since we should have everything in place (CPU+GPU+Drivers).

The little MacBook is a good candidate for the A Series switch. I think we'll see that this summer.

That would be wonderful. Also in time for a redesign as the current iteration is now past 4 years old, well past the average of MacBook redesigns. Although I’m curious as to how much an A-series MB debut at.

Greater of course, just in between the Air and the pro

I wouldn't mind it, just as long as single core scores go up as well, and ... without having the turbo boost frequency way above the actual clock speed, thereby 'cheating' benchmarks like Geekbench.

A 'normal' clock speed of 2.3ghz with a turbo boost to 4.1ghz is not going to give you the kind of sustained real world performance that a Geekbench comparison might imply ... compared to a cpu with a 3.8ghz clock speed turbo boosting to 4.1 - Even though both with come up with almost identical Geekbench scores.

One of these would make a huge improvement:
  • Intel Core i9-9900K (8 core/16 thread), 3.5GHz (5GHz Turbo Boost)
  • Intel Core i7-9700K (8 core/8 thread), 3.6GHz (4.9GHz Turbo Boost)
  • Intel Core i5-9600K (6 core/6 thread), 3.7GHz (4.6GHz Turbo Boost)

I suspect either the i7 or the i9 as the top option (maybe both - i7 as the top standard CPU, with the i9 as a CTO option). The question is whether they can cool the thing? Those CPUs, especially the i9, may be "supposed to" have the same TDP as the 7th generation, but they draw quite a bit more power under load (the i9 is capable of nearly twice the draw of the 7700K). The iMac Pro cooling system would work, but will they do that?

The Kao rumour today of the 31.6 inch 6K monitor, might very well also make its way the the iMac and be the “significant display improvements”.

This is an interesting move if it happens, as there will be a redesign to accommodate this and most likely will remove the bezels down to virtually nothing in the process. But at the same time, my god that’s a big display to have for anything other than actual work.

This is most likely the reason for the delay. I doubt Apple will do 31.6 screen for Mac Pro and different size for iMac etc. I belive Apple will use this format across the board. Unless the 31.6 will be some super expensive thing and in that case we might as well just forget it for iMac. (maybe pro)
Knowing Apple, I think we get this size for everything.
So, its starting to make sense why such delay. Redesign is comign :)

So what you guys are saying is that it's possible we could soon be able to buy a 31.6" 6k iMac with matching 31.6" 6K displays on each side? This would be amazing....all for a modest price of 12K after taxes :)

I was saying this before....I think it’s possible the 27” and a 30” (now 31.6”) display could belong to a newly expanded iMac Pro line, while the 21.5” and/or (maybe, hopefully??) a 24” would be the consumer product line., which is exactly how the MacBook and iPad product lines are laid out.

I would really love to have iMac size bigger with matching design display. That would be amazing

Just as long as the stands are such that the screens align - having to find a piece of wood to raise my old Thunderbolt Display to be inline with my iMac 5K was insulting to both me as a user and Apple as a supplier.

I really hope they won’t discontinue the non pro 27” iMac. I’d expect a 21” and 27” standard and 27” and 31” Pro iMacs.

But what if they replaced the 27” non pro iMac with a 24” size?

That was very short sighted on apple’s part. Let’s see if they can do it right this time.

I have a 2015 iMac 27" 5K, does what I need it to do but was planning to upgrade when the new release is out. If the rumor is true about the switch from intel, and the next refresh of the iMac uses intel chips is it safe to assume I should skip it and just keep what I have.
