Mac Mini is a fine pc if you don't have heavy work to do but in my line of work it would probably burn to bits because of CPU and RAM usage a program like Logic or Protools would use.
Bit of an odd reply really as the new focus of the latest Mini's is the 'Pro user's and all the reviews are very positive. In fact the 8th gen i7 gives the iMac Pro a run for its money.

It’s not odd....the work i do calls for a lot of computing power for long periodes of time. What do you think will happen to that mac mini when say two hours of max cpu usage ?! It would get so warm in that little housing it could fail. On paper the mini may look as a champion but in practice it wouldn’t cut it as it is not designed to be used like that.

My iMac Pro’s have 14 core xeon processors with 128 GB RAM.....it’s an absolute beast that i doubt a mac mini would triumph over.

The Mac mini won't burn up. If the fan can't keep up, it will just throttle. These chips are designed to reduce performance when necessary to keep temperatures within the acceptable range. But even then, reports suggest its throttling is not severe in Mac mini.

It should be noted though that it uses 65 W TDP chips, not the 91/95 W chips in the higher end iMacs.

With the Mac Mini getting 6 core processors, it stands to reason that the next iMac will, even if there isn't a redesign i think the updated iMac will be a beast.
it better be a beast and i hope the hold up is the GPU because that is what I would love too. I just don't want to get a cpu bump and thats it. I want proper update after 2 years :)
Redesign? Yeah, I think we need one as the look is a bit dated compared to the other products that are coming out. The bezels are just too big and need reduction. The chin doesn't bother me that much but should be reduced also to complement the new bezels :)

Why a redesign with just a simple spec bump. I assume that we get the redesign with the change to Apple CPU.
not happening. They won't do iMac first. First one will probably be mini or something small as a test ground (just like they did with Intel)

Apple kept the new MacBook Air a secret (no case leaks prior to the announcement) so the lack of any such leaks does not necessarily imply they are not planning a new iMac form factor even if I personally do not believe there will be one.

As for the move to Apple CPUs, it will almost certainly be the 12" MacBook that is moved first. Desktops will likely be the last models to go.

Yes and yes! :D

The Intel transition started with the iMac and the MacBook Pro.
My bad then. It looks like I remember the event differently. I thought it was Macbook first or one of their smaller ones. :)
In that case, yeah, iMac but I doubt it as its still too early. I think 2 more years :)

Two words: Wait, what? Are you assuming that the A13 (or whatever it should be in a desktop) would actually throttle in an iMac case?

Well, the A chips have never been used in real world situations where the CPU was stressed for an extended period, like what you would have if you're rendering a 30 minute HD or 4K video.

It's possible the A13 (or whatever it would be in a desktop) would be cooler than an intel chip, but since they've only been used for dinky apps in phones, and none of those apps give it any real prolonged stress test, we have no idea what their actual thermal performance would be in a full fledged computer environment.

Disagree. You know that the current A-series chips operate at around 3-5 watts, whereas Intel chips need way more? That‘s the thing here - if you introduce a super-powered A-series chip with actual cooling and a chassis built for it, pundits expect small wonders. Let‘s wait this one out :)

Well, I personally dont want an A chip machine anytime soon. Would mean most of my current software wouldnt work (or at least wont work well if we’re talking virtuization) and I do like the ability to bootcamp windows now and again.

To me, A chip macs would mark the end of the line.

Personally can’t wait for A-series powered iMacs in the future. I can’t imagine the power these things will yield. Logic Pro X on A-series should run like a dream.

I agree, the problem will again be software as devs will again take ages to port and some will give up.
Its already pathetic that Overwatch for example is not on a mac

Well they are getting a not-insignificant influx of money and staff this year so... *fingers crossed*

Seriously, I expect they're building a Battle Royale version, but one can hope.

I share your disappointment. Its still shocking to me, considering how supportive Blizzard has always been with the Mac.

I would not at all be surprised if the woeful state of graphics drivers and OpenCL / OpenGL on the Mac played a role in the decision. Overwatch is a more GPU-intensive game than the other Blizzard titles that have been ported. All that being said, maybe they will consider a Metal2 port.
