I do. I may be in the monority, but i'm not the only one. typing entries on my phone is nonsensical.

another thing to keep in mind is that a lot of news reports were saying apple was shifting resources to go all in on AI. I don't want to project into the future, but it's hard for me to believe that apple won't continue to put most of their resources on AI.
I do too... don't understand why they wouldn't put Journal on iPad and Mac.

My guess is next year yes

don’t count on it too much though
I don't want to be a jerk about it, but I will no longer entertain any notion from anyone in here that big changes are ever coming to iPads and iPadOS:

Since 2019, Apple has made it crystal clear that iPads run iPadOS and will never evolve or combine with any other Apple product or OS belonging to a different product category.

iPad is its own product category, with its own, well-established user-demographic that Apple will never abandon and convert to macOS.

iPads sales/profits are simply too good. Or at the very least as good as Apple needs them to be. And I'm sure the last batch of iPads will only add to iPads' success.

Yes, no macOS on iPad sucks for those of us who would like that or something close to that. I'm one of those people, I want macOS on iPad for my setup.

But we are not the demographic(s) Apple caters to with iPad.

macOS on iPad won't happen. Stop speculating.

Honestly, I think Apple Intelligence will transform the iPad more the people will be willing to realise. It looks like a real help with productivity.
Agree. It should make for a big upgrade to all the OSs. At least over the coming two years or so.

Kinda wild though that the 2022 iPad Air (M1) and M1 iPad Pro get Apple Intelligence while iPhones 14 Pro/Max and 15/15 Plus won't

As was the case when iPad Pro m1 came out and people were hyping that WWDC as “surely they must transform the iPad to the next level”

They don’t know how Apple rolls ;)

Always buy the product for what it does at time of purchase not off speculation or a wishlist of future features. Cause you’re likely to be sorely disappointed

My 2020 12.9" iPad Pro is due for an upgrade.
What I need? A standalone device when on the move, with cellular capability, good multitasking centred on docs and pdf (on its own screen - external monitor is not an option when in Court), desktop class browser, full file system acces and pen input.
Sadly, although hardware-wise it is very capable, the iPad Pro with iPad OS 18 is not that device.
So, like it or not, when cellular Surface Pros will launch I will have to buy one and give my iPad to my wife for content consumption.

Yes, the Surface Pro is your answer. I think MS is poised to be the competitor that Apple needed now that Qualcomm has a capable SOC. Sadly, you'll have to wait until the fall for the Surface Pro 5G.

Not an issue because Courts are entering in vacation period starting July.
I would have preferred to stay fully in the Apple ecosystem but iPad Os simply doesn't fit the bill.

I'm still within the return period for my M4 11. Debating if I should return it since iPadOS looks so underwhelming.
If everyone returns it, it might get their attention….maybe just a tiny bit 😆😂

I have a question… what didn’t your M4 11“ do that you was hoping Apple would have announced at WWDC… folks act as if their M4 iPad suddenly got discontinued lol.

And as the saying goes… buy the product as is not on what you hope it would become.
For me it is clearly MacOS together with the (Laptop-like) magic keyboard. This could be e.g. a container or a VM - Filesystem (and ideally application state) should be shared. That way I would only have to carry one machine with me.
Currently, if something gets complex, I am forced to pull out the laptop - after cursing over iPadOS restrictions.

Can the new Mac control iPads too or just iPhone?

Being able to do iPads would be less awkward since it takes up much more of your computer screen canvas

I really dont care for the new ipad Hardware. I care about iPad OS, which is the limiting factor. And since there are no real changes or anything that would make it a better OS to replace my Laptop -> still no iPad for me.

To be honest, it is also the apps themselves - e.g. iPadOS outlook has a lot of unpleasant restrictions, you won‘t find in the MacOS version.

It’s funny that people were eagerly awaiting a new iPad OS update that totally takes advantage of the new M4 chip, as an excuse to upgrade from older hardware. Shouldn’t you be happy they didn’t release a new iPad OS which is a complete resource hog and makes your M1 obsolete? The reason for getting a new M4 now isn’t all about getting new features that can only be used with the processor today, but for making sure your iPad will still receive new features and support 5 years from now.

Having said that, there are some features that SHOULD be on the iPad Pro by now. I’m not looking for Mac OS Apps to come to iPad anytime soon, but the following should exist, especially for a device labeled “Pro” and costing over 1000 dollars.
  1. Multiple tasks running properly in the background, multitasking in general better support
  2. File manager that works reliably and has the basic features of a desktop OS
  3. Windows management that is much more flexible
  4. The Journal app should exist on iPad, Preview as well
But even with all these features implemented, an M1 wouldn‘t come close to its limits, and people would continue complaining.

Hugely disappointing. iPad OS is still significantly behind Mac OS for productivity and overall capability.

Unless you’re into illustration, I’d opt for a MacBook as your main serious computing device.
I’m not into illustration yet I find the iPad M1 to be able to handle 80% of my work and I have an M2 Pro Mac Mini at my desk for the other 20%. No need for a MacBook in my workflow. I tried it, hated it, went back to the iPad after about 2 weeks. I ordered the M2 Air to replace the M1 simply for the landscape camera since I do plenty of TEAMS/Zoom meetings every day.

I think we saw some seeds of that yesterday. Asking Siri in plain language to fetch a file based on erratic memory of the file name and content is not bad. Yesterday, we saw Siri taking the first step to be an organiser that keeps track of you rather than being a stupid robot that you issue command to.
I hadn’t actually watched the demo yet, Siri was actually able to do that?! Man, we really are getting closer and closer to the Apple Knowledge Navigator mockup:

Guys, after 13+ years with the iPad, I might switch to a Surface tablet, if iPadOS is not evolving. If my iPad Pro 2017 isn't getting updates despite remaining snappy, I think this might be it :(
What specifically about this year, year 13, makes you want to make that choice?

I actually like iPadOS for touch, but with the Magic Keyboard the iPad is Laptop like.
So I wouldn‘t want MacOS as a replacement, but as an add-on for the iPad.

Apple could have had that already - by allowing UTM on the APP-Store and not removing virtualization code in iOS recently.
