I wasn't saying it couldn't happen, I was saying that people are more likely to swipe left as some do that all day long to get to their other app pages from their starting page. How often do you swipe right to get "back" to your starting page where you then could accidentally swipe right again to get to the home page?

That's what I think most are complaning about...they are constantly swiping left and now will stop on the app library page instead of their last page of apps. I always kept my apps in folders on one page to avoid swiping at all, so never affected me, but I can see why some might not like having it there.

And I've now taken the opposite route where I'm using only widgets and the app library...no more apps or folders. I swipe left quickly BECAUSE i know I will end on the app library. Everyone is different.

With the accidental swiping, it's just a matter of habit, and the more people use it, the more they get used to it and it cuts down. I see it in the releases within the company I work for. Any time there's change, people grumble about it, but then they adapt to the change, and are content again.

....personally, I see the app library as completely pointless and not useful at all if users cannot actually rename the folders that Apple creates here.

Instead of now hunting for apps spread over say 2 or 3 pages, you'll now be hunting the same apps in the library because they have been placed in a folder named something other than what you would expect it to be named.

sigh...the difference is that you can actually tap on the most used apps right in the "folder" instead of opening a folder and then tapping.

Do people even try these things out or just complain about them first?

And it has been mentioned so many times before...what is the point of renaming the folders when the App Library is a "smart" page controlled by Apple and driven by what the developers categorize their apps as? You have been able to name and sort your own folders anyway you want for years...just do that and don't use the App Library.

There is an alphabetical listing of apps and you can also use spotlight to find an app. No one has to hunt for apps in this day and age unless they don't know how to use their phone. The library is to clean up the home screen.

Most people are not going to test every feature and function of a beta OS. They will test those elements that apply to their business or personal interests. From a developer perspective, I would not waste time and resources testing the App Library when it has absolutely no bearing on how my app(s) will work with the new version of iOS/iPadOS. The only way the App Library even pertains to my app would be based on the category/categories I assigned to the app when I submitted it to the App Store. I would be significantly more interested in App Clips then the App Library, because that can affect how customers interact with and use my program.

Owning a MB, IPP, ProMax, AW4, Airpod Pro, iPod Touch, (along with a Thinkpad, Razer, and B&O headphones) I try to see what works and what doesn't. Having a developer background and as such I tend to try to see broadly what works and what does not. Then I look at new features and new functionality to see if and/or where these might fit into, replace portions of, or enhance my current use and workflow. So from my perspective, I am testing this very broadly. If you do not, that is your option. Mine is to try it all where possible.

Well, they're a bit late to the game, if they only start complaining about it now, as Today has been there for years. Of course, no one would have double standards and not have an issue with accidentally swiping to that screen, surely? 😂

I think you are looking at this from a very narrow point of view. 🤫
  • Some like.
  • Some complain.
  • Some adapt.
  • Some ignore.
Surely you remember many complained about that also. ;)

One never swiped right though before home was added...but swiping left is quite common to get to multiple pages of folders/apps.

They can just add the ability to "hide" it in a later iOS if people are really bothered by it, but I doubt that will ever happen. As someone who had every app in a folder, I love single tapping into the more common apps I use while still seeing notifications for ones I don't use that often. A much cleaner design IMHO and I have hidden all my old pages.

Personally I just tap the dots 🙃

For the people who don't understand the concept of the app library. Really?

It's for people with pages and pages of uncategorized/rarely used applications. They can hide the screens with all of these apps and have them appear on one page in folders.

How fricking hard is that to figure out? It might not be useful to you, but to say you don't understand the purpose/concept is ridiculous.

I'd say you are being disingenuous. Many of us don't have that issue. App Crowding.
[automerge]1595954986[/automerge]
I'd argue that if you had more than 1 page of apps, you would swipe right accidentally to Today, as you would accidentally swipe left to App Library..... I can guarantee if I did, then many others do too.

Be consistent, if people want to have the ability to hide App Library, then the same must occur for Today.

That would be great!

Actually ... Say What?

Here is my current App Library
AL001.jpgAL002.jpg

In all of the "folders", looking at the upper left in each, eight of those apps are used often. Some I have not opened in weeks. Some I have yet to test under B3.

So, unless I am seriously misunderstanding you ...

I wonder who really "hunts" for apps these days....

Now I'm confused...which part of what I said wasn't clear??

EDIT...wait...the comment about "most used"??

Maybe you have to use it more? Mine defintely shows the most used/accessed apps as the larger icons so I can easily tap them while the smaller cluster is less used ones (or not used at all in recent memory).

Of course, they are already sorted by category, so some well used apps are not in the top three for that category and move into the smaller cluster. My "social" folder is like that...but it is definitely showing the most used first/larger.

My page 1 is composed of apps I use multiple times per day. Eight of those are in the upper lefts of their prospective folders. My front page has 16 apps on it. My page 2 has 19 apps on it that I use most daily.

Suggestions folder I use one of those. The other three are on page 4 in folders.
In Health and Fitness - I use NRC and Castlight daily.
Entertainment - App Store? I only that if needed
Lifestyle - Pinterest is the only one I use daily

I hear what you are saying but I am not seeing this at all on my side.
I would love to get it to do that.

I wonder if recently added can be affected by updates. I added FF9 and Translate when I setup my device originally. I have added a number of apps since then.

I would have to think using app library would have nothing to do with it showing it as I am seeing it.

I'd say I was being sarcastic. Those that don't have 'app crowding' issue can ignore the app library. To say they don't understand it's purpose is silly.

You've lost me.
I'll keep playing with it.

Hah...I should have said, the app library should be based on how you access apps in general, not whether or not you actually use the app library.

So, if someone has their existing pages of apps set up and they are accessing it like they always have been, they should go in app library for the first time and see the apps laid out as I described they are for me. For me, the more I use it, the more I'm liking it!

Why is it silly?

I for one am trying to figure what it is really useful for. If it's sole purpose is to support search and reduce clutter for some .... I find that a lot of effort for little gain. From my perspective.

Sadly I am not seeing it that way in the AL.
I'll keep looking.

Thx!

You answered your own question. It's literally the same concept as the Android app drawer and I think people understand the purpose of that, so yes, it's silly to act like you don't comprehend this. You didn't put in any effort so who cares? As I said, it might not be for everyone. Enjoy the rest of your day.

If there were any complaints, there were none to this level, that I am sure of.

Within each category, the ones with the larger icons are the ones you commonly open from that category (regardless of how you opened them - App Library, Home Screen, Siri, etc). Suggestions is same as Siri Suggestions, which varies by time of day and amount of usage. Recently Added - This does seem to not just be ones installed, but ones updated, I am noticing.

If you're seeing different behaviour, then there's possibly a bug, so report it. ☺

I for one am trying to figure what it is really useful for.

You’ve hit the key distinction here: what something is “useful for” (in one sense, a subjective determination) is different than what something is “used for”.

I can tell you what a cement mixer is used for; it just doesn’t happen to be useful to me, as I do not need cement poured anywhere.

The same is true of the App Library. It’s obvious what it is used for (to list apps and make finding them potentially simpler). It may not, however, be useful (relatively speaking) to someone who has a highly organized foldering system already in place.

No it isn't. Android is my main device. Been using it since the original Nexus ...

Can you point me to where it says this is how the App Library is supposed to work?
I have not seen it and honestly it is the first I have heard of it.

This way I can reference it in my feedback.

Oh just stop. The app drawer and app library are the same concept and you know it. A place to find apps not on home screen. One is hidden and needs an icon press or swipe, the other is not so hidden and requires a swipe or two.

Anyway, I've had about enough of you. Have a nice day. I don't plan on replying to any more nonsensical bull crap.

Ummmm...but that's not true...App Library never changes and always has the same layout whether you have apps on other pages or not. It's just another way to view them.

Not to quote myself, but I think my post a couple of pages back is the clearest I have been in any post... ;)

You obviously have no clue. Sorry but the App Drawer is nothing like the App Library. Not sure what model or launcher you are using. The Android design is not like iOS. Anyone using Android knows this. When you can give a factual answer come on back.

Stage drama and written guides are different. Sorry but I need more than see WWDC for reference.
If we don't have it, I'll submit without it but word it differently; "other users are reporting..."

App Library

App Library on the Home Screen
The App Library is a new space at the end of your Home Screen pages that automatically organizes all of your apps into one simple, easy‑to‑navigate view.

Automatic categorization
All of the apps on your iPhone are automatically sorted into categories such as Social, Productivity, and Entertainment. Categories intelligently reorder based on app use.

Suggestions
The App Library shows suggested apps you’re likely to be looking for based on usage such as time, location, or activity.

Search
Use the search bar at the top of the App Library to quickly find the app you’re looking for. When you tap Search, apps can be displayed alphabetically, making them easy to scroll through and find.

Hide Home Screen pages
You can hide pages to streamline your Home Screen, making it easy to get to the App Library. New apps downloaded from the App Store automatically go into the App Library.

Recently Added
App Clips that were recently launched and apps downloaded from the App Store appear in the App Library, making them easy to find.

so....another way to view apps...that's it. And they even mention hiding your other pages so you can view the app library instead. This is the way I'm currently working and I love it...app library is showing me exactly what I want to see when I want to see it...very smart IMHO.

My big concern and I've expressed before is about many, many folks having no idea what these changes are and what to do with app library, etc. I would think a vast majority of people never change screen layout or do anything with wigets etc. So are they going to be very confused with all this new look stuff. I know I'm thinking of going out of town when my wife gets this update.
