My big concern and I've expressed before is about many, many folks having no idea what these changes are and what to do with app library, etc. I would think a vast majority of people never change screen layout or do anything with wigets etc. So are they going to be very confused with all this new look stuff. I know I'm thinking of going out of town when my wife gets this update.

You're correct...I think of my parents who most likely don't even use folders. This is perfect for them. Just delete all their current pages and leave them with App Library. And honestly, I think this is the majority of iPhone users.

We here on MacRumors are the minority and like what we like and know how to use the system to it's full extent. As shown by most of the comments on here, App Library as simply "too simple" and not customizable enough for some. The answer? Don't use it!!

This is such a rare situation...Apple has actually added a new feature (or features if you throw widgets in here as well) without taking away any of what we were able to do or organize like we did before. But for the vast majority of users that download hundreds of apps and they just sit on multiple pages, this is a great option.

You answered your own question. It's literally the same concept as the Android app drawer and I think people understand the purpose of that, so yes, it's silly to act like you don't comprehend this. You didn't put in any effort so who cares? As I said, it might not be for everyone. Enjoy the rest of your day.

I think that's why I couldn't care less about App Library. I don't use the app drawer on my Note 10+ unless I need to add an icon to one of my folders for quick access. Since iOS already makes those icons available on the home screens, I can just drag them into the correct folders and be done with it.

How many people have that many? The average is definitely less than 100 AFAIK

Says 60-90 on average when I Google it.

Sounds about right...so 3-4 pages of apps assuming they don't organize them into folders (wonder what the stats are on that!)

Getting rid of 3-4 pages of apps and using just the App Library (and maybe a page of widgets) starts to sound appealing to the "average" user (not most on here).

I can see it IF we had the ability to alias folders and organize by those.

the average iphone user is not going to get the 'alias' concept, and, realistically, this isn't going to happen anyway. the app library will be useful to those that find it useful, and, for everyone else, life will go on just fine....

I beg to differ. If they use folders at all they will get it.
I suspect even businesses would go for this.

they will get what: aliases? it's irrelevant, as apple's not likely to do this (& why would they)? meanwhile, i've explained aliases on the mac to a lot of people, most of whom don't really get it, or don't like the idea anyway.

We are talking Apples and Oranges.
I'm not looking at having Apple replicate Mac functionality.

I’d never have thought not liking the app library would be such a contentious issue lol. Is it not ok to want the choice to be able to disable it from showing up? Not a ridiculous suggestion seeing as Apple are finally allowing the user to customise the home screens after nearly a decade and a half.

it would be nice if we could disable that; i'd also disable the today view, i never use that either. but apple is not much for giving us customization options. sometimes i miss jailbreaking..

I don’t use today view either and a,though it’s not as intrusive within the general navigation, the ability to disable it would be very welcome. It took years until we were able to hide iOS apps like stocks and keynote even if they can’t be deleted completely. I might be out of touch on this though and maybe this has changed again.

wait, so what are we talking about? i thought this was about aliases for the folders in the app library? am confused..

The ability to create a local folder and call it what I want then place what apps you want into it in the app library leaving the original icon in the folder originally assigned. It can be a previously designated folder, Other or User01 or ... , that I can locally rename. Kind of like a label (alias - non-indexed). That way if I need a School folder for the apps I use in school .... like Evernote and PDFExpert and ...

Kind of like an app library folder relabeled with app shortcuts.

this would allow the minimal use, or no use, of folders. Do it all in the app library.

that sentence alone is enough to send my brain into spasm. i get that this is something you want, but what does that have to do with what is? this isn't how things work, so not sure what you're trying to prove. in the real world, you use it as it's designed, or don't use it at all (which is what i'm doing). but for some, it will be useful...

So you want the existing home screens (where you can create local folders, call them whatever you want, then place what apps you want in to them) PLUS the app library? What you want is home screen functionality in the App Library, when the latter is intentionally designed to operate in a different manner from what we already have.

Can we stipulate that some would like the App Library to be something other than it is and move on?

Please?

Or at least create a separate thread for this? This has been an interesting thread until this topic took over. Given the voluntary nature of using this feature, its like arguing what’re certain accessibility functions should be on iOS devices. Just don’t use them.

To be fair I have tried to get to love it but using it daily apart from widgets which I don’t like and I only have one page because of my ocd and it’s always laid out the same I don’t see much change I know the ui for calling etc but to answer with speakerphone is still a longer step, and I just wish the ui was new looking to give it a fresh new look it doesn’t feel much change and all I want is plz Apple let me remove the homebar I really hate it lol

Let’s be clear though, it wasn’t just a few people who wanted the App Library to have renaming capabilities that took over the thread. The conversation had two sides with dismissive suggestions also which made out one side was in the wrong. Nobody was wrong, just different preferences on what is expected.

Let me try to clarify a bit ....
1. I would like to give the App Library an honest try. I am as part of the beta.
2. My devices are process / task sorted: work, family, vacation, daily activities, consulting, etc...
3. My folders (current design) generally contain apps I use to support these items and are labeled accordingly.
4. The App Library as it is currently designed does not allow the flexibility to cluster my apps to support my current use.

If the App Library allowed user folders that worked like favorites in Safari but with apps .... OR allowed the user to move apps from one App Library folder to another, I could make this new function work for me.

As it is in its current incarnation, the App Library is of no use to me.

hope this helps

Not at all. I am looking at how I can minimize my current home screens and replace my folders with the App Library.

Basically think of Home screens as an app and App Library as an app, they have different purposes and usage. The Home Screen allows user customisable folders and can now hide screens that are not used as much. The App Library is an App Store category based indexing system. You can't customise categories yourself in the App Store, same applies to App Library.

There is no point in having the App Library do what you want with folder naming, as that basically is just what the Home Screen is, and therefore makes it redundant.

App Library isn't for you, you'll never be happy with it, so therefore just don't use it and move on and use customisable Home Screen folders like you have been, as that's all you want.

I don't have any use for the Today screen, and I ignored it and wasn't bothered by it's existence ever since it was added to iOS.
