Me and many, many others. And how is it a phone size that’s dead when it’s going to be the best selling phone this year?
Well a few here. Outside of macrumors probably not many. Could you source your many many statement.
Sales has nothing to do with the size. It’s all about the price. If Apple released a 6” phone for 399 it would be like crazy too.

Thanks for your OPINION.

... thought I’d do what you’ve done throughout this thread.

You obviously missed my sarcasm (/s) switch.

Reddit, YouTube comments, the media, personal friends and family. Can you source your “if Apple released a 6” phone for 399 it would be (think you meant sell) like crazy too comment? No... opinions are what make a discussion forum what it is so don’t lament those who use it as it’s intended.

Size is a reason the demand is high, to say it isn’t i think is quite short sighted. The Touch ID love, the lightweight build, familiar form factor plays a big part in why it will be a success and in turn sales figures high.

It’s not worth getting so worked up on a platform like this, it’s unimportant in the grand scheme of things.

Whose worked up. Not me. You seem to be though. Lol

Oh, I should mention (if I haven't already) that I did go ahead and purchase the 2020 SE (White back, 128GB storage upgrade). I got in on the Walmart deal for $250 ($200 + $50 for the 128GB upgrade for existing customers - It remains to be seen whether there are some hidden gotchas on the pricing). I don't think it's shipped out yet. I know I won't like the size as much as my older SE, but I lived with a 6 (and later 6s) for a while, without *too* much complaining, so I *think* I can deal begrudgingly with the added size, which I *think* I'm willing to do in order to get a better camera. The camera is really the big draw for me. I'll do some comparisons with my older SE camera to see if it seems like it's worth it.

If/when the rumored 5.4" model comes out (which will *still* be bigger than I'd like), I may upgrade to that and then pass this 2020 SE on to my daughter.

One other bummer with the added size of the 2020 SE is the all-glass design, which will make it extra slippery. I've been keeping my older SE naked. It, too, is slippery, but it's tiny (making it easy to grip securely) and relatively cheap, so I took my chances and have been fine with it. Actually, I've dropped it a couple of times and it's survived unscathed. With the 2020 SE I'm thinking that I may have to get some thin/grippy case (or some adhesive things to make it grippy). I know that Apple likes to make their devices "beautiful" and they also now make a lot of money by selling their own cases, but I wish this "low priced" iPhone would have had rubbery body that was easier to grip, didn't require a case, and possibly was a bit more damage-resistant with drops. The current glass design + case will make it heavier than it needed to be.

May be worth checking out Peel or Totallee cases, they are the thinnest so will protect from scratches and the like if your going to be careful and not drop it. Keeps the form factor slim and basically almost like having no case on.

I can also vouch for the genuine Apple leather cases. They last literally years, get better with age and feel really comfortable to use.

I'm an iPhone 6 user, had mine for almost 5 years. My wife had an iPhone 5se, same time frame. She never wanted to upgrade because she liked the small size of the 5se, but constantly complained about typos in text messages. She never liked my 6 when she used it. I got her a refurb 7, and she loved the size. A lot! Unfortunately, the battery life is about 2 hours, even though the "health" showed 100%. So it's going back, we're ordering an SE2020. Same size as the 7/8, only .01" different.

My only problem with any of these is iOS13 and my older macOS machines. They don't play nice, Apple wants to push us to the latest macOS, which will break a lot of very expensive apps. It's a difficult place to be, but iCloud to the rescue...I guess.

Unlike a lot of folks, I'm actually not even that much in love with the old SE design. I think it's quite beautiful (if a bit dated now), but I find the sharp edges to be a bit uncomfortable. I'd actually like a more comfortable-to-hold design, with no sharp edges and a case/back that is made out of a grippier plastic/rubber material, that is also more durable, such that I wouldn't need to use a case and wouldn't worry about it getting damaged if I dropped it.

FWIW, I've actually been using my old SE with no case, since the purchase price was low enough that I didn't worry too much about the possibility of it breaking and needing to be fixed/replaced. So it allows me to truly maximize the smaller size and weight that it offers. But, like I said, it's not ideal, as the sharp edges make it less-than-comfortable to hold, and the slippery metal back increases the risk of dropping it.

Everyone's needs are different, but for me, the lack of a headphone jack isn't a concern. I have AirPods and a CarPlay head unit in my car, which I plug in via lightning to keep the iPhone's battery charged.
I'm not in love with it either, never have been. I've found it very nice to look at, but less so to hold. I, like you, find the sharp edges less comfortable to hold caseless. But I found the 4 series comfortable: perhaps it has to do with the thickness. Because of that, it's the first iPhone with which I've used a case. The new SE will be the second.

Anyhow that's how I ended up with the 5c back in the day. I could tell that the 5S was the real technology win (Touch ID, better camera, 64-bit architecture), and that the 5c was much more comfortable. The plastic was nice and grippy, I never felt like it was going to slip out of my hand. And I thought it was a beautiful design: completely minimal. And this may sound really nit-picky...it was just the slightest bit heavier, which I appreciated. The 5 series (including the 2016 SE) all felt so light as to be a movie prop. The 4 was perfect: it was smaller, it had full glass front and back, it felt DENSER. Like I had a good piece of technology in my hand. It had good heft.

So in the end I chose comfort instead of technology. I expected that in two years, they'd have updated the 5c with the newer tech, and I'd get that. I was/am disappointed they didn't.

Outside MacRumors is exactly were majority of the SE's target market is. Majority here already have Xr or better.

That said, I do agree the price is its most attractive feature for most. I prefer smaller phones myself but sadly, most of the world has moved on.

Okay, so I bought the new SE. I love the size and design of the original.

Now the new one is here I'm seriously reconsidering... and will most likely return it and get another original SE with more storage space. I'll give it a week. How long do you think the old SE will continue to get updates and support?

At least 5 major iOS versions, I expect. The iPhone 6s and SE (2016) already got iOS 9-13 and are expected to still be supported on iOS 14.

I upsized storage as a hedge just in case I don't like any of the iPhones Apple releases in the near future.

Old SE is likely to get iOS 14, although that was rumoured before the replacement came out, so at this stage no one can say 100% but it’s highly likely.

Give the new one a fair chance, it’s a big adjustment changing phone size but if you can adapt the benefits are there. I moved from original SE although had an 11 Pro until early this year and sold it as it was too heavy and I couldn’t justify the cost.

But if you can’t adapt, there’s no harm going back. Even when updates stop it will still continue to be a great device for another couple of years, maybe longer going by how well it runs on iOS 13.

Thanks, I'm going to give it a shot and see how it goes. I don't need a high spec phone at all, really only using it for calls, WhatsApp and email. When I picked up my old SE, I seriously considered getting the 4S as it is even smaller...

If your device can no longer ger security updates, you should replace it. We just have this one now:

and then you have this list:

I feel the same, I’ve particularly small hands so anything bigger than the 5/5s/OG SE chasis is too big for me, my thumb can’t even reach the top opposite end of it as it is! I’m usually on the move so one handed use/ability to fit pockets is handy.

But unfortunately small phones are becoming a very small niche with 6” screens becoming the norm, I know keeping a small phone just isn’t working for me at this point. My original SE works wonderfully but the battery life is just too small, at this point I’d rather just get a bigger phone that would last me the day. I’m considering getting an iPod touch for gym/comfortable one handed use at home once I upgrade to a larger phone as well so I can get the best of both.

At the end of the day I have given up on wanting a small phone. Like you I have small hands, like "little girl's hands", and given my choices in the current environment I'm just going to go with what gives me the best user experience and more to the point, the best one-handed user experience. In 2020, or even 2019, that's not Apple for me. I don't know about anyone else but from my point of view iOS is designed around 2 handed use.

I do get it from a manufacturer's perspective, larger phones are easier to design for and manufacture. There's a lot more real estate to get things done in. But still, I can't change the size of my hands so it comes down to the OS's ability to compensate for the hardware sizes.

If Apple would make a serious effort at a smaller phone I'd buy it in a second. While they choose the SE to be the cheap phone, as opposed to being the small phone, I'll be buy other phones.

My old SE has lasted a good 4 years and if the battery was better and the Touch ID was still working I'd be sticking with it. This was my first "smartphone" and if it was possible to use WhatsApp on my Mac I would 100% be returning to a non-smartphone. I do miss their smaller format and the real keys.

Yes, the new SE is not great for using with just one hand.

I'm curious, what other options do you have? From low-end to high-end, it seems most Androids are bigger compared to the smallest of Apple's offerings.

Obviously not smartphones (and both are pretty expensive).

And this is the thing for me, there are simply no small phones anywhere. The moment you have that it all comes down to software.

For me, the best combo seems to be Android 10 its Samsung's OneUI 2. It simply allows me to operate at the bottom of the display far more. Don't get me wrong, far from perfect (and "perfect" is an exaggeration of where it's far from) but it gives me the best fit… at least for now. iOS is a two-handed OS for me. If Apple allowed the "back" button to be at the bottom right (or left) of the display things would be significantly better. With Android 10 I can simply gesture swipe from the left or right side (I can do both at the same time). Also the layout of a home display, it all starts from the top left… opposite of my most important digit.

Bottom right is the key corner for me, not the top left!

I have both a Samsung Galaxy S10 and an iPhone Xs (and an iPhone 6 - father's old one, iPhone SE and iPhone 5s… older iPhones are gone). The S10 is in fact taller than the Xs with the same width (at least with the covers I'm using on each) but is significantly easier and quicker to handle for me. My milage definitely varies based on the app but something is better than nothing.

Sure iOS is prettier etc but I end up looking at it for longer and getting less done. I want to be looking at my phone at little as possible to be honest with you irrespective of what I'm paying for my phones.

To keep it on topic, given the size of the iPhone SE 2020 I cannot reach the top left so its size no longer matters. And given the choice of a top end 6.1" OLED display vs 4.7" LCD display, not to mention all of the other improvements like the cameras, from 3 years ago its a simple choice.

Unfortunately, because every OEM seems to look to Apple as a lead, there are no other brand of phones that don't follow the Zack Morris brick phone trend.

I'm alright though, since I still have my 6S and Galaxy S5. They are not going anywhere and offer more features than any modern phone does. All modern phones do is take features away, cost far more, and are way too big unless one expects 80s parachute pants to come back in style

What will change the trend is for folks to stop accepting bad design and stop buying. loss of profits will motivate any company to change. Unfortunately everyone thinks the Apple logo is holy and lines up at any store regardless of what they do, and people have an incessant desire to buy new things they don't even need just because theirs is too 'old' when it otherwise works perfectly fine. when did gadgets become fashion? Heaven forbid the user who still loves their iPhone 2G is caught in public, they will become a social outcast!!! gasp!

Actually most peeps are fascinated when I fire up this puppy: ;)
