So as quoted above the Buyer's Guide says:
"Recommendation: Buy only if you need it - Approaching the end of a cycle
Days Since Update: 161 (Avg = 185)"

So what are the chances of an upgrade in the next month? The last one was a significant overhaul so firstly is an upgrade imminent and if so, what could we expect? I too am itching to buy an iMac but am tempted to wait a few more weeks. I would really appreciate any savvy advice.

thanks,
R ;)

I can understand wanting the latest and greatest with a big purchase like this, but with electronics there will always be something newer. If it meets your needs, and you need it, then buy it. It will only be top dog for a few months, and then it will get superceded. Life's too short to be waiting on this stuff all the time.:)

...so I'll be placing my order tomorrow, it was worth hanging on just in case....can't wait.

Not sure why you waited until Macworld and hoped there was going to be something new for the iMac as it was introduced about 2 months ago?

Extremely inaccurate. If you had taken the time to read the posts just above yours you would know that it has been over 160 days since the last update!

I wouldn't take much stock in that. The last one went over 350 days between cycles, if I remember correctly.

And the update before that one was only a couple of months time. You can not determine anything by simply looking at the LAST update.

If they were just going to update the cpu to penryn in the next month or so I wouldnt care, but It would be nice if they put in a 8600gt or even 8800gtx to keep up with the mbp's gpu

You won't get any argument out of me thre...

I just wish we KNEW when the update was coming!!!

Nothing of value, that is.

Why is it of no value to know that the last update cycle was 350 days? It indicates that the next update could be next week or 190 days from now.

If you want a new iMac go for it. The current machines are fabulous. I ordered mine on the day of the latest update but not everyone needs to or has the luxury of doing that. I'm loving this iMac.

It's not like you're going to be stuck with "junk" if you buy an iMac today and they come out with an upgrade next month. There's always something new coming no matter when you buy.

Just to note ...

The 24" 2.8GHz iMac is listed as 'Discontinued' in the European Apple Stores, though oddly it's still possible to order one. They will probably revert to 24" 2.4GHz with a 2.8GHz BTO option.

The current line of iMacs uses Intel Core 2 Merom processors: the 2.4GHz is a Core 2 Merom T7700, the 2.8GHz is a Core 2 Extreme Merom XE X7900. Since Intel is facing problems with Merom's successor, Penryn, it seems likely that iMac processor and bus speed bumps are not to be expected for a couple of more months.

I wouldn't trust that buyer's guide. The Macs on there are frequently on 'don't buy' for a few months.

I wouldn't expect any speed bumps until May/June personally.

...I want the 2.8GHz machine, but I think it would be better/cheaper to buy a 2.4Ghz and upgrade the processor....

There's no discernable difference in everyday use between the 2.0, 2.4 and 2.8Ghz processors really. Yes you'll knock a few minutes off video encoding, but that's about it.

I think he means he's going to select the 2.4 in the Apple Store and do a BTO upgrade to the 2.8 processor. It's cheaper doing that and buying your own RAM.

That's exactly what I mean, thanks Dimwhit.

Although I'm a bit concerned about the "discontinued" status of the 2.8Ghz iMac as reported above...Hmmmmmm.

Any more opinions that there will be no significant update until May/June? I can't wait that much time. One more month maximum. Do you think that new iMacs will include Blu-Ray?

Isn't there in Macs? There is when a PC is concerned, esp. with Vista :(

Pascal,
Could you please elaborate on the problems Intel is having with 'Penryn', or at least link to an article for me? I am very curious about your stance that it will be atleast a couple of months before the update occurs. I've heard from other people that it will likely happen very soon after Macworld since Penryn was released only a few weeks earlier at CES.

I have no problem buying the current model, just didn't want to buy 2 weeks before they updated the entire line, understand? Any light you could shed on the topic would be most helpful!

I'd have thought the next update will be a speed bump, so unless the current models are simply too slow for your needs, I'd be tempted to buy now as the form factor of the iMac is still relatively new. Also, the current iMacs are pretty damn fast, so I'd have thought unless you're looking for Mac Pro levels of processing, you'll be just fine to buy one.

Now people are saying that last night's "discontinued" fiasco may indicate a soon coming update as well. (last night the top-of-the-line iMac showed a 'discontinued' sticker)

What do you guys think?

I am just completely lost at this point... to buy or not to buy, that is the question.

It's still showing as discontinued on most (all?) the European stores. Apple web support are saying it's an error, but it's taking a long time to fix it....

Hmm, the Apple customer support seem determined that it's not discontinued but I pointed out to the lady I spoke to that they're not likely to know if the product is being updated or not.

I'm quite convinced that they will be updated before the end of February at the very latest (more likely this month some time).

Gaz,
Can you tell me why you are convinced they will be updated befor the end of February at the latest (or earlier)? I'm almost ready to give in... and need your advice!

Why would they discontinue just the 2.8 iMac? When has Apple ever discontinued a single version of one of their models before coming out with an upgrade to it? Doesn't make any sense to me.

To me it seems more likely that they are doing it to further simplify the iMac line. Similar to what they did to the Mac Pro line, making it fewer models with more upgrade options.

If they were updating the computers... isn't it right that they would never go through a 'discontinued' phase, and would merely get specs updated on the page?

Apple usually update the specs on average every 6 months. (This isn't a stat report, it's just an observation). The iMac was last updated in August 2007

Also, Apple earmarked a large amount of the Penryn CPU stock from Intel so it makes sense that they use them as soon as they can to maximise the profits (Afterall, they only go down in value).

If you can afford to wait, it will be worth it because when you order your new updated iMac, you will feel that it was worth the wait.

You say that Apple has earmarked a loarge amound of Penryn CPUs. May I ask where you get this information? If it is true, it would certainly indicate a possible iMac upgrade (depending on how large of an earmark it could only mean that the MacbookPro is getting Penryn)

I've also heard that Intel was possibly having trouble shipping Penryn? Does anyone know if this is true? If so, that would mean atleast another couple of weeks wait!

Gaz, it sounds like you are in a similar situation to myself... how long are you expecting to have to wait, and how long are you willing to wait? :)
