See I just don't see the logic in that, because then I'd have to wait for Apple to accept it back, then wait until they pay money back onto my bank card, and it's just soooo much hassle. It's just so much simpler to wait for an update :)

Agreed. It is not what I want to happen... just an backup plan if the update happens to come between when I order the mac and when I receive it.

The problem is that it could come sometime within the next 2 weeks, or it could be 2 months or even more from now.... and I just dont' think I can risk waiting that long.

I could wait two weeks, and it might still be a month away! Nothing in the last week or two of going through these discussion boards has led me to believe the update was coming in the next few weeks. In fact, most people seem to think it is a month or more away. :(

But Freddie, weren't you worried about missing out on an upgrade when you bought your iMac? :D

Hee Hee, you're right, how will I live with myself when the next update comes;).

The update I am waiting for is the 5th or 6th one from now. By that time I will have received my money's worth from this one and will be time to move on to the next machine. Umm, with the wife's permission of course.;)

I ordered mine yesterday night...and I'm so excited.....if I were you I'd order it now or just leave it until they eventually do update the imac whenever that will be...don't keep checking everyday, you will drive yourself mad!!! :)

I've got my new iMac ordered!

2.8Ghz Extreme
750 GB Hard Drive
4GB (Crucial RAM on the way)
iWork pre-loaded
Wireless Mighty Mouse

I am very excited!

Excellent same as I ordered, though I've got the 500GB HDD, just got to be patient now...I've bought the "Missing Manual" book to give me something to read while I wait :)

Bingo! We have a winner...

This is the correct answer! Freddie, you have won... PEACE OF MIND! Congratulations!

I am waiting to place my order for a new iMac until next month. It is possible Apple can do a "discreet" processor boost, since they pretty much do that every six weeks, and it is about 30 days from end of cycle when they refresh the product, according to the Buyer's Guide.

I've done enough waiting...been waiting since mid December.

I want the 2.8GHz machine, but I think it would be better/cheaper to buy a 2.4Ghz and upgrade the processor. That way I can upgrade the memory afterwards through Crucial. Not bothered about the 500GB HDD as I have plenty of external storage I intend to use, 360GB installed is fine...in fact if I add the wireless keyboard and Mouse, upgrade the processor, then buy 4Gb Ram from crucial it still comes to about £40 less than buying the 2.8Ghz from Apple...plus I can sell my 1GB Ram, tomorrow is ordering day :)

(Shame I'll have to wait upwards of 2 weeks for it though )

Who in their right mind is still running 98.

I just stopped my 97 dell xps machine, its been on for 10 years straight, never turned off, it still works, but no point in keeping it, i gave it to goodwill, a charity store, but i gave them the cheap stuff:p

i took out the IBM HD, RAM, optical, flobby, and a bunch of other stuff

I know when the next update is coming.

It is going to be tomorrow if I place my new iMac order today. Happens to me all the time...:mad::mad:

Yep, I broke too. I realized that if you keep waiting for updates, you'll never get anything, and throughout the life of you machine, you will see several updates pass you by anyway, so no need to get upset by the thought of them.
So I'm typing this from my new shiny 20" 2.4 iMac. It's great! Finishing off transferring all my files from my Windows box, which wasn't as bad as i thought.

Thanks for the advice all!

Any chip that makes it to the MBP will make it to the iMac. The only way it wouldn't would be if the iMac moved to desktop chips.

As for the Penryn, some food for thought. Based on the benchmarks, there will be very little performance boost from the Penryn chips. It's really not worth waiting very long for. The battery life isn't an issue with the iMac. so it's really the 1-8% speed boost you get. That's not very much.

Not sure where you are getting your stats on the Penryn chips, but you are looking at a much more significant performance boost than 1-8%. Especially in regards to video encoding. Where are you getting your figures? The new SSE4 extensions are a big performance boost. Take this quote from anandtech for instance: "The DivX 6.6 test is particularly strong for Intel because it is using an early alpha version of DivX with support for SSE4. With SSE4 support, the quad-core Yorkfield processor ends up being more than 50% faster than Kentsfield, which bodes very well for Penryn if applications like DivX can bring SSE4 support in time for launch."

Of course no one knows for sure how well the penryn will perform, but I think better than 1-8%. Conservative estimates I'd say would be more like 12-25% boost in performance for non-SSE4 supported application and 35-50% for those with SSE4 support.

Got it here:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/411620/

1-8% performance boost on common tasks. That's what most people will see. Up to 40% on applications that support the SSE4 instruction set. My understanding is that the later number includes very few, if any, apps that the typical user will use.

So for most of us, the performance difference will be negligible.

I'd tend to follow those numbers then. More recent. As usual it seems earlier reports were exaggerated. Until I get one myself, its hard to judge. Still 40% increase is a good boost for sse4.

Thanks for the link.

Typing this on my new 24" 2.4 GHz(with 4 GB Crucial RAM) iMac!
God I love this already, and I am going to be so busy for the next months/years learning all the ins and outs that I don't care if Apple upgrades this model tomorrow! I am indeed very happy.

I just bought the exact same iMac and upgraded it with the same RAM. I couldn't agree more. Although, if they came out with a quad core in June, I'd probably sell this one faster than you can say quadcoreimacwithsixgigsofram.

Just another disenchanted Windows user. I have been thinking of ordering an iMac since November and decided to put it off until the first of the year. Then it was to hear the keynote address. Enough waiting--at least for me--I want to try something new--and it is not called Vista. So I ordered the 24in, 2.8 iMac on Friday--now just have to wait for it to arrive. :)

Congrats... I ordered mine too (2.8, 750GB, 4GB RAM) and couldn't be much more excited! From what I have read, they are absolute screamers... I really doubt we will be dissapointed.

I am excited to start building my AppleTV DVD collection.

I pick up my new iMac in less than 2 hours from FedEx. I got the 24" 2.8GHz with 750GB hard drive and I'm ordering 4GB of RAM from OWC.

Congrats Morod (and all the rest of us)!!! I can still feel that tingly feeling in my toes.

Good gosh, after checking several web sites and reading the posts from switchers to Apple, I am very glad I own no MS stock. I haven't been following their volume/amounts, but they have to be hurting. I saw somewhere that Apple moved 2.3 million Macs this last quarter. That has to hurt Redmond! :p Although I won't be losing any sleep over it and neither will my new iMac!
