You say that Apple has earmarked a loarge amound of Penryn CPUs. May I ask where you get this information? If it is true, it would certainly indicate a possible iMac upgrade (depending

I'm not completely sure, but I think that the large amount of Penryns that Apple was rumored to have purchased was for the Mac Pro's (which are Xeon processors not Core 2 Duo).

Fivepoint,

I'm in the same boat as you - I really want to switch to an iMac, but I don't want to miss out on an upgrade by a month or so!! I'm surviving on my PC for the time being, so not too much of a hurry for me to change, but I don't want to wait too long before I buy into the apple experience.

Here's to sticking it out for a few weeks - that is unless we get some firm indication of a speed bump / gfx upgrade in the pipeline (would be nice!) any time soon

I was set on waiting until MacWorld before I bought my iMac. No update came, so I bought it. I'm glad I bought it and my wait is over.

What happens if in a few weeks, there is no update? Will you buy it then or keep waiting longer?

I've also heard that Intel was possibly having trouble shipping Penryn? Does anyone know if this is true? If so, that would mean atleast another couple of weeks wait!

I was looking around the net and stumbled across an article about apple buying all the top line Xeon's and it mentioned something about earmarking the mobile Penryns too... Will try and find the article again.

Gaz, it sounds like you are in a similar situation to myself... how long are you expecting to have to wait, and how long are you willing to wait? :)

Yeah, I am expecting to wait a couple of weeks (maybe a month), but I am prepared to wait as long as it takes. I currently use a a high spec Windows PC, and hate it, but at the same time, I am willing to keep using it until the iMac's are updated.

Congratulations on your new purchase...you will be extremely happy with it, I'm sure.

If an update doesn't appear in a few weeks, I'll keep waiting because I am in no hurry for a new computer...Just want to spend my money before I find something else to waste it on :)

Well as the delivery estimates appear to have been corrected I have jumped in with both feet and ordered this:

iMac, 24-inch, Intel Core 2 Duo
2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme
1GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM - 1x1GB
Apple Wireless Mighty Mouse
Wireless keyboard (English) + Mac OS X (English)
320GB Serial ATA Drive
SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)

Been quoted delivery of 25th to 30th January.

I'm off to but 4GB Memory from Crucial now :)

It's nice to know I'm not the only one... on the other hand, this doesn't really help either one of us, does it?

Good question... and that is really the problem. I could buy it today... be 100% happy with my machine, but I just can't stand knowing an update could be only a week away. When I bought my last iMac, they added USB 2.0 2 weeks after I bought... I swore I wouldn't do that again! :) The vicious cycle.

I am stuck using a 5 year old 15" iMac as of now... it can't wait as long as you. But I could wait up to a month or so. I can do February, just not April. Wish I knew when...

That's the machine I would be building today (plus a 750 GB Hard Drive). :(

Wow, that's a long time. I would have gone for a bigger hard drive because they're not really user upgradeable (you have to remove the glass on the screen to get into the screen).

But I do envy you. Wish I had the nerve to buy one now...The money's in my bank, but I am determined to wait for an update.

The bad thing about that is if they don't get updated by February and you do buy the iMac... you will be closer to the day that they DO actually update them and might even be more upset than if you had bought it today.

Hahaha. Exactly! You are really busting my balls now... :D

True! But there lies the vicious cycle! Once it's been updated, you're closer to the next update :p

I agree but I've got 4 External Drives with over 1TB on, so I'm sure the internal HDD space will be enough :)

4GB of memory just ordered from Crucial as well, they are doing free shipping at the moment so came to £65...not bad I think, Crucial memory has a very good reputation (Should hopefully make about £20 by selling the 1GB stick on Ebay as well)

I'm saying the following for anybody that's looking to buy and iMac:

Buy now! If they get updated in a couple of months, don't worry... just skip the next update and go for the update after that. By then, the iMacs might have a complete redesign and Intel will have released the Nahelem processors.

Are they expected to be used in iMacs or only in MacBooks (Pro)?

Unknown. Its too far out to say... although currently the iMacs and MacBook Pros use basically the same processors, so logic would lead you to think that they will continue this way on.

I am more concerned with Penryn, and figuring out exactly when that processor will be added to the iMac line (hopefully along with a graphics update to boot!). I am anxiously awaiting any news whatesoever...

I am beginning to be worried now that it may be further away than I am willing to wait. Number one reason? Macworld just happened... the apple home page is currently completely covered in Macworld stuff...

Do we really think they would put minor MBP or iMac updates on their in place of that stuff? Most likely they will wait atleast a month for that stuff to die down, and use those processor bumps to reinvegorate the apple main page.

Thoughts?

Any chip that makes it to the MBP will make it to the iMac. The only way it wouldn't would be if the iMac moved to desktop chips.

As for the Penryn, some food for thought. Based on the benchmarks, there will be very little performance boost from the Penryn chips. It's really not worth waiting very long for. The battery life isn't an issue with the iMac. so it's really the 1-8% speed boost you get. That's not very much.

I ordered my first mac, a 20" imac 2.4ghz, last night.

Like many people, I was waiting until macworld just to be sure. Deciding then that even if they do announce an upgrade in Feb., it wouldn't stop me from enjoying my new toy.

Seriously folks, you can't be a slave to Apple's update schedule. Unless you decide to only buy when something is first released, your always going to be disappointed.

I can't wait until my imac comes in. I've been intolerable to be around today. :)

Like someone else mentioned, it seems like the wait is kind of long for shipping. I ordered last night, and got overnight shipping, and the earliest delivery estimate is STILL the 21st.

In general, I think this is very good advice...

However, the processor is not the only thing that could potentially be updated. We may see a 1)processor upgrade 2)graphics card upgrade 3)additional/different I/O ports 4)lower prices

It is difficult to say one way or the other, but as a rule I would rather buy just after an update than just before one.

P.S. Do you think the long shipping wait has anything to do with a forthcoming update? ;)

I suspect the long wait is purely due to being inundated with orders based on the huge amount of Media space Apple has taken up in the last few days...

Well... I said I was waiting until MacWorld to see if there were updates. No updates came, so I just bought one.

- 24 inch iMac
- 2.8 GHz Extreme
- 750 GB hard drive
- 1 GB RAM (I will be getting 4GB of RAM from OWC)

I really don't want to wait any longer because it could be until the summer until it gets updated. If it happens in the next 14 days, I will be canceling my order and getting that one... but that would be highly unlikely.

I think I will also buy the TimeCapsule in the next couple of weeks (probably the 500GB version).
I just got my 24" iMac 2.8 GHz 500GB hard drive and I just installed 4GB of Ram! That I got from Kingston! I'm loving this Mac! :)

This is obsurd. The iMac was only redesigned in August 2007. They won't be redesigning for a couple of years at least yet. (Have you followed their update track record?) The white iMac was around from the first G5 iMac and stuck til August 2007. The Macbook Pro has had the same design for around 5 years minimum.

Nobody is expecting a redesign of the iMac. They (like me) just want an upgrade to the CPU and hopefully the GPU.
