I've been running 1.1.3 unlocked, jailbroken and activated on a simplicity tariff but I wanted to upgrade to 2.0 and I'd heard a rumour that O2 were allows PAYG users to activate without signing up for a contract so I thought I'd restore my phone and try and go legit - and it worked!

(The following was using ITunes 7.7 on windows)

1. Put iphone into DFU mode
2. Restore 1.1.4 firmware (note that I was on 1.1.3 before this)
3. When restored, iTunes asks to activate phone. Follow activation procedure, no contract signup asked for
4. Restore previous iphone backup
5. Upgrade to 2.0
6. Restore previous iphone backup (note phone already activated)

Steps 2 and 4 could probably be skipped but I did it this way because I wasn't sure what a direct upgrade to 2.0 would so to my phone

And there you have it, an activated 2.0 firmware on Simplicity without any unlocking, jailbreak, pwning etc

Cheers

James

really???? im on simpliity and would be very tempted, so you phone was obvilously unlocked. it works fine? just bit of extra info would be ace as im scare of killing it

what u unlock with? i pwned.

why dfu and not restore mode? im so close to doing this hahah darn it

**** i bit the bullet, it seems to be working... will update.

really?

interesting....

i have an AT&T mob which i imported to UK when they first came out. Its unlock and jailbroken with iLiberty. I'm not fuessed about being able to use the installer app anymore but i really want to get mobileMe push working on it, will this allow me to use any sim once i upgrade?

please give more details......

thanks

i activted with a normal pay as you go (o2) and is working. nit tried my simplicty yet and 2.0 is taking forever to update

IT IS OFFICIALLY UNLOCKED FOR MY SIMPLICTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ITUNES LETS U USE ANY O2 SIM BUT RECOGNISED SIMPLICTY AS PAY AS U GO (so far anyway--but it is 100% working and now is legit)

I got an at&t-phone that was running 1.1.3 jailbroken/unlocked and on an o2 simplicity contract..

Upgraded to 2.0 and all hell broke loose: "The sim card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported".
Now, obviously, this was not supposed to happen, due to all o2-sims being accepted?

As far as I can see, there is a difference between the iphones sold from at&t and the ones that are sold from o2.
If someone has got an idea regarding how to fix this (without downgrading), then I am more than willing to entertain it...
Guess it could work if I pop in a PAYG-sim from o2?

Same for me. No unlock, Just put a PAYG sim card in. works. Never jailbreak my 2G iphone before

is this confirmed to work with any UK o2 sim? I'm using a o2 contract sim. It is not an iPhone sim. Has anyone tried this yet?

I have a UK o2 sim but unfortunately a US iPhone so don't wanna try it.

Be great if it would work though, I would lose Installer for the App Store as Installer is turning into it anyway with software now charging.

wondering the same thing...

I'm wondering the same thing - can you activate + use an 02 payg sim on a locked, US origin iphone? The o2 website suggests you can pop in a new payg sim into the phone, and then activate via itunes, which sounds good, but I'm a bit weary about this - has anyone tried this yet?

Not sure what unlock I had because I used an early version of Ziphone 2. I'd never used Pwnage though.

My guess is that since the iPhone is now activated in store, they needed to allow any iPhone to be used in iTunes, which is why activation works on any O2 sim

I started a thread about this yesterday. I have run my UK bought unactivated 1st gen iPhone for about 1 month on o2 PAYG (originally ran it on Orange PAYG for six months) with no problems. Originally I ziphoned it but later pwned it up to 1.1.4.

I can confirm that this now runs on the new 2.0 software without having to jailbreak or unlock.

The only thing I did was visit https://www.o2.co.uk/apps/help/help?qid=29&q1=25 and filled in the form. o2 then sent me a text message about 2 hours later to confirm. I think this basically updates your Sim to use it in the iPhone.

I then updated to 2.0 through iTunes (took about 20mins plus another 15mins to sync everything back, activation seemed to go straight through - no hold ups). I didn't even bother virginizing it first just went straight from pwned 1.1.4 to legit 2.0

Everything seems to be working although I had to redownload all the apps I downloaded yesterday for them to work.

Basically it works:)

Wether I jailbreak again when the new Pwnage comes out I'll have to wait and see. Can't see a reason to at the moment.

as far as I read if you put an 18month contract sim in it puts you on a new iPhone tariff. That's how it reads on 02 site. So pay as you go and 30 day contract simplicties are best option.

I'm so pleased to finally be legit but also not have to pay silly contract as my sim only deal is ace.

All is well , app store ace. Etc. I'm so pleased

No joy with a us phone

I've tried this with a us-sourced phone, and it just says "this sim card is not supported" using a fresh O2 payg sim card.

Anyone had any luck with a us-phone in the uk?

thanks

All people on a 18 month o2 contract ( NOT IPHONE) can now change to the corrrect iphone contract without extending their contract at all.... simply change over. This does however work if your going to be paying the sae amount or willing to pay the iphone monthly cost BUT it does not mean you are getting a new 18 month contract by changing....

As i underdtand it, a US phone is ATT therefore once upgraded will be locked back to ATT and will not work with o2 unless you unlock/jailbrake the new 2.0 firmware.

WOOOOO!
My iPhone which has had the 'No service' issue for decades is now alive!
I used my 02-UK monthly sim (not simplicity) to activate using iTunes and it sprung into life!

Thanks so much to the thread starter and to 02-UK for opening up! :D

You beauty!!!!! :D

Have just upgraded my 1.1.4 iphone, which had been activated etc using iLiberty+, straight to 2.0. Didn't bother virginizing, removing SIM or anything - just let itunes do its thing. At the activation stage, as described in earlier posts, I just had to put in my apple ID and accept the usual massive list of T&Cs.

I'm on the O2 simplicity tariff, which is ideal for me. Obviously, I've lost all the apps I'd installed previously, but I'll dodge along for a while using the appstore. Only if I'm missing a lot will I go looking for jailbreak solutions etc.

Thanks you guys!

Doug

Simplicity Works! and disable EDGE to avoid charges

new o2 activation rules... o2 are officially allowing people to use their o2 sim cards in original iphones, whether they are pay monthly or payg. you can check the o2 help and support section to confirm this. the only downside of using your current o2 contract sim is that the iphone may use EDGE and hence charge you if you dont have an internet bolt-on.

HERES HOW TO DISABLE EDGE on iPhone 2.0 (o2):
go to SETTINGS, then GENERAL, then NETWORK, then CELLULAR DATA NETWORK, then tap in the APN field, type some random crap at the end of "mobile.o2.co.uk". THATS IT! now even when wifi is off and it tries to connect to o2 EDGE, it cant! cos the settings are messed up :D

i myself have upgraded a ziphone unlocked 1.1.4 iphone to 2.0 through itunes without using any third party software... it upgraded fine and then asked the iphone to be activated - here there is an option to skip half of the registration process by clicking "this is not my iphone" - and hey presto! you have an activated iphone 2.0! im using an o2 simplicity contract simcard.

so o2 users - no need to unlock your iphone anymore! :)

Hmm. Strange one here.
Although the iphone seems to be working fine, all of the apps I've downloaded via the appstore in itunes don't work. They start for a second or two, then drop me back to the home screen.
Also, a video I'd previously downloaded via itunes last week, their free TJ Hooker episode, won't play!

Any ideas?

Cheers

I had to delete them off the phone and then resync. All worked fine then.

OK, first problem (you knew this wouldn't be trouble free).

When I try and use Edge (actually it's GPRS I think, square with a hole in it) I get an error "Operation could not be completed. (kCFErrorDomainCFNetwork error 302.) I haven't tried on Edge (no reception here) but believe a PAYG phone won't use edge anyway!

I checked my network settings and they seem correct

APN address (PAYG): payandgo.o2.co.uk
Username : payandgo
Password: password

Anyone else having this problem. Everything else seems fine.

This seems awesome!

I have an o2 phone which I have pwnaged to 1.1.4, I am also using an o2 PAYG sim card.

Is it possible to upgrade to Firmware 2.0 without doing anything else? I am not too bothered about the installer.app as the Appstore pretty much does that now.

Thanks for any feedback!
