I put mine in a case so I don't have to handle it with kid gloves. As a bonus, it feels better in my hand and doesn't slide around.
Nope.I suspect that people that are fastidious about their phones are also fastidious about their motorcycles, cars, electronics, camera equipment, guns.................
Investment involved, pride of ownership, desire to keep it unbroken and functional, resale value...............
When Apple designed marketed them as such. When jony and the designers turned phones we drop into Swarovski techno-crystals.When did phones become these jewelry like items that we handle with kid gloves?
Yes, see reasons aboveHere's a question to everyone: Would you still care this much, and case-ify your iPhones, if it cost 50% what it is today?
I would. I mean, I only paid $200? for my 14 with the Verizon promo. Here's a question to everyone: Would you still care this much, and case-ify your iPhones, if it cost 50% what it is today?
I always go naked and don’t get upset about the occasional small scratch. Phones are tools to be used, not artworks to be preserved in pristine condition. A case would only makes it heavier and bulkier, a total turn-off.Some of us go naked but then we stress it and get upset if there is even a small scratch on it.
I used my previous iPhone XS Max with a case AND applecare. After a few corner drops, case damaged, so does that corner which was “supposedly“ protected by case. Yes, that case is cheap, but the fact that cosmetic damage can’t be protected by cheap cases means I really can’t strain myself to care about scratches and dents all that often. I’m already stressed as-is, why adding more stress? It's not for everyone, I guess. But the value proposition of having that ~$1199 all-in device that is protected for years to come in the rare event you end up destroying it is awesome, vs having one in a case that if dropped at the right angle will still break and cause a $649+ repair bill.
There are few absolutes here, that's why it's an open discussion. There seems to be a consensus in this thread that an uncased device will ultimately become damaged and require replacement. It is inevitable, you cannot avoid it.
But use a case and all your worries will go away. Use a case and you will never have to worry that a drop did damage, never have to worry about scratches, dents, scuffs or dings! Heck, you won't ever drop your device ever again! A case is magic armor!
Is that really true? Is it really inevitable that your device will NEVER become damaged, scratched or otherwise marred just because you use a case?
Or is it just possible that damage CAN actually happen to a device in a case? Ahhh…I hear you! It's got to be the RIGHT case! Only if you have the correct and ultimate case that everyone agrees is the definitive magic armor of the moment will your device be blessed against damage for all time (as long as it remains in the case)!
Or is that a fallacy too? Is it just possible that case users can also drop their phones, can also damage them (with a case on)?
And if you can admit that damage to a cased device is just possible, then can you not also admit that no damage to a non-cased device is possible? That years later non-case users might have devices that are undamaged and in pristine condition having never been inside a case?
Or are non-case users just lucky? They beat the odds! Defied the inevitable and walked away! Really? How valid is that? As valid as a case being magic armor?
I recognize that a case prevents serious damage from drops and that this enhances resale value by keeping a device in good condition. But I ALSO submit to you that serious damage and replacement are NOT the inevitable end result of not using a case.
Can we not agree?
I'd very much like to see the color of my phone, but the only two options there are to go caseless or get a clear case.
I don't like clear cases because they either discolor or scuff & scratch all too easily or both (unsightly either way).
I go through the phases over time.Reading this forum it seems many of us are really careful with our (new) iPhones.
Some of us buy Pro partly because of the looks but then we slap a case on it and hide all the beauty to protect it.

My question is - is this normal? When did phones become these jewelry like items that we handle with kid gloves?
Yep. My Apple silicone case paid for itself recently. Dropped the iPhone on a slab pavers the corner of the case has a gouge but not the phone. Bear in mind the height of drop was 2 foot. But damn kinetic energy 🤣I personally like my phones to look good so I use a stylish case to maintain the attractive appearance. In a perfect world we wouldn’t have to use cases however a single drop can scuff or dent a phone causing cosmetic damage which is an eyesore.
Those that don’t use cases shouldn’t be bothered by cosmetic damage as it’s almost inevitable unless you treat the device with kid gloves, not let anyone else touch it and are always aware of your surroundings 100% of the time. I can’t be bothered with that nonsense but I do care about the condition of my device so I just slap on a case and forget about it.
My peace of mind is in providing secure places to set my device down and being alert for any threats or possible threats to it. That is my equivalent to your fire extinguisher if you will. There are few absolutes here, that's why it's an open discussion.
I choose to have an appropriate fire extinguisher in my kitchen.
I've never had a fire, but should I have one, I'm equipped for it.
Have been for years.
Piece of mind.
The phone, cased and with a screen protector, I have piece of mind as well.
I have dropped the phone.
The case protected the phone, and the screen protector cracked, but the screen didn't.
And yes...........we can agree.
