Since iPhone 3G I’ve put my iPhone in a leather sleeve when in the pocket/bag or just lying around.

Caseless when I use it then back in the sleeve. Works great, best of both worlds. Never in such a rush that I miss anything.

It’s not that it’s like jewellery for me, it’s more that I want to get as long out of it as possible. Looking after your stuff is the usually cheapest option.

I suspect that people that are fastidious about their phones are also fastidious about their motorcycles, cars, electronics, camera equipment, guns.................
Investment involved, pride of ownership, desire to keep it unbroken and functional, resale value...............
Nope.

My reasons

My phone is vital to me, it’s a work tool, at this time especially since I am between positions and need to ensure it works properly. Last thing I want is it being rendered unusable because it would be a chunk of change and me out of contact with possible employers for an undetermined length of time.

Right now to put it into perspective a top of the range iPhone 14 pro max is over half a year’s unemployment benefits in the UK. In the field I am working in currently it’s nearly a month’s pay. Hopefully this week the move I’ve chosen will confirm they want me when it comes out as a more manageable 2 1/2 weeks. Much of what I do could potentially cause water damage even though I pay for AppleCare+ it may not cover it. Sure I have savings, but it’s still a big chunk of change when you have little coming in.

Ok so do I need a top of the range? When I am working yes I do. I need the battery life, the camera, the storage and the connectivity all as part of what I do.

So I have a nice case and a screen protector on the phone. Whilst yes it looks nicer without, it’s a luxury I can’t afford to do.

As an aside it also marks mine out at business meetings when everyone has theirs on the table. I’ve also got a matching watch strap and AirPods Pro case, which has lead to some quite profitable conversations.

When Apple designed marketed them as such. When jony and the designers turned phones we drop into Swarovski techno-crystals.

Imagine if a real design genius (instead of a pretentious minimalism zealot) rose in power at Apple and integrated better external drop protection into the design? A Sony sports Walkman type of iPhone.

Here's a question to everyone: Would you still care this much, and case-ify your iPhones, if it cost 50% what it is today?
I would. I mean, I only paid $200? for my 14 with the Verizon promo.

It's not just about money like to keep my stuff nice and I don't believe in treating durable goods as disposable. It's bad for the planet. I replaced my 9 year old iMac with a high spec Mac Studio that I hope to get similar mileage from.

It's also just an opinion, not a fact, that the phones look better without a case.

I used to ALWAYS go naked on my iphone. No case. Never had a cracked screen. Not once. But then this Summer I got a job installing solar panels, so I got a case, and within weeks I still managed to shatter the front & back glass of my iPhone 11 Pro. One of the back camera lenses even shattered! 😬 I plan to upgrade to the 14 Pro Max. Luckily the Solar Company i work for will also get me a corporate iphone. I do not plan to bring my new 14 Pro Max on the job again. So I can go naked with it, and show off all that Deep Purple goodness. 😉💜

Some of us go naked but then we stress it and get upset if there is even a small scratch on it.
I always go naked and don’t get upset about the occasional small scratch. Phones are tools to be used, not artworks to be preserved in pristine condition. A case would only makes it heavier and bulkier, a total turn-off.

It's not for everyone, I guess. But the value proposition of having that ~$1199 all-in device that is protected for years to come in the rare event you end up destroying it is awesome, vs having one in a case that if dropped at the right angle will still break and cause a $649+ repair bill.
I used my previous iPhone XS Max with a case AND applecare. After a few corner drops, case damaged, so does that corner which was “supposedly“ protected by case. Yes, that case is cheap, but the fact that cosmetic damage can’t be protected by cheap cases means I really can’t strain myself to care about scratches and dents all that often. I’m already stressed as-is, why adding more stress?

Saving applecare money by spending time on protecting it? Idk if that saving worth it, given accidental damage bill can easily surpass that amount should unfortunate happen. Ever since I scratched my apple watch Series 4 screen glass by scratching a wall (sorry I don’t know a better word), I give up worrying about cosmetics. It’s not worth my time and energy.

I have a screen protector that I, or literally everybody I've showed my 14 PM to so far can't even tell is applied and a nice rigid clear case that will probably never leave the phone now until the day it retires in many years

If all that fails I also have AppleCare which I have never gone for before but at the prices for the phones now it seems a no brainer especially with the Theft/Loss coverage option too, it helps I won't really 'notice' the cost slowly draining out of my bank account over 24 months 0% of course!

There seems to be a consensus in this thread that an uncased device will ultimately become damaged and require replacement. It is inevitable, you cannot avoid it.

But use a case and all your worries will go away. Use a case and you will never have to worry that a drop did damage, never have to worry about scratches, dents, scuffs or dings! Heck, you won't ever drop your device ever again! A case is magic armor!

Is that really true? Is it really inevitable that your device will NEVER become damaged, scratched or otherwise marred just because you use a case?

Or is it just possible that damage CAN actually happen to a device in a case? Ahhh…I hear you! It's got to be the RIGHT case! Only if you have the correct and ultimate case that everyone agrees is the definitive magic armor of the moment will your device be blessed against damage for all time (as long as it remains in the case)!

Or is that a fallacy too? Is it just possible that case users can also drop their phones, can also damage them (with a case on)?

And if you can admit that damage to a cased device is just possible, then can you not also admit that no damage to a non-cased device is possible? That years later non-case users might have devices that are undamaged and in pristine condition having never been inside a case?

Or are non-case users just lucky? They beat the odds! Defied the inevitable and walked away! Really? How valid is that? As valid as a case being magic armor?

I recognize that a case prevents serious damage from drops and that this enhances resale value by keeping a device in good condition. But I ALSO submit to you that serious damage and replacement are NOT the inevitable end result of not using a case.

Can we not agree?

I don't obsess over keeping my devices completely flawless, but I do take proper care of things I pay good money for cause I like them to look nice. A phone IS a tool but scuffs and scratches are ugly and aren't covered by Applecare. I'd also rather spend 5 minutes replacing a broken screen protector than go through the hassle of getting my whole screen replaced through Applecare. I sell my old devices too and I get more if they look good. Which used phone would sell first- the one that looks like the previous owner took good care of it, or the one with a swirly screen and dinged up frame? Even if they both work perfectly I'd pick the one that's in better physical shape, as would most people. I protected my old plastic phones too, I saw plenty of 'naked phone' people back in the removable-battery-Samsung days and their phones looked awful. Colored coatings peeling off, cracked battery covers, just janky af.

At the end of the day, it's each person's own choice though.

There are few absolutes here, that's why it's an open discussion.
I choose to have an appropriate fire extinguisher in my kitchen.
I've never had a fire, but should I have one, I'm equipped for it.
Have been for years.
Piece of mind.
The phone, cased and with a screen protector, I have piece of mind as well.
I have dropped the phone.
The case protected the phone, and the screen protector cracked, but the screen didn't.
And yes...........we can agree.

I'd very much like to see the color of my phone, but the only two options there are to go caseless or get a clear case.
I don't like clear cases because they either discolor or scuff & scratch all too easily or both (unsightly either way).

I guess it’s only been two months, so who knows what scratches and scuffs might appear, but my starlight mini 13 looks beautiful in the clear apple case. White ring on white backing, with the silver sides. Big fan.

Reading this forum it seems many of us are really careful with our (new) iPhones.

Some of us buy Pro partly because of the looks but then we slap a case on it and hide all the beauty to protect it.

Some of us go naked but then we stress it and get upset if there is even a small scratch on it.

My question is - is this normal? When did phones become these jewelry like items that we handle with kid gloves?
I go through the phases over time.

I get the cases first. I don’t really baby the phone since it has the case, but once it starts getting its first scratches, I stop noticing and thinking about it.

I personally like my phones to look good so I use a stylish case to maintain the attractive appearance. In a perfect world we wouldn’t have to use cases however a single drop can scuff or dent a phone causing cosmetic damage which is an eyesore.

Those that don’t use cases shouldn’t be bothered by cosmetic damage as it’s almost inevitable unless you treat the device with kid gloves, not let anyone else touch it and are always aware of your surroundings 100% of the time. I can’t be bothered with that nonsense but I do care about the condition of my device so I just slap on a case and forget about it.
Yep. My Apple silicone case paid for itself recently. Dropped the iPhone on a slab pavers the corner of the case has a gouge but not the phone. Bear in mind the height of drop was 2 foot. But damn kinetic energy 🤣

My peace of mind is in providing secure places to set my device down and being alert for any threats or possible threats to it. That is my equivalent to your fire extinguisher if you will.

I don't begrudge others using cases to protect their device, I just object to those who see only doom in my not using one.

For what it’s worth, I’m naked in bed right now. 😉

In seriousness, I upgrade my phone yearly. In order to get max trade-in value, it needs to be returned in great condition. More importantly, I don’t spend this kind of money to carry around something that looks like I found it on the side of the road somewhere. Barring inability to purchase because of financial reasons, I will never understand people who will walk around with devices with crack screens, scratches and scuffs. I take care of what I buy because that’s who I am.

I put mine in cute cases and have a screen protector applied. It doesn’t take away my enjoyment of my device.
