I upgrade yearly (maybe not this year since the Ultra is likely going to get a price bump and I’m very happy with the 14 PM). I still slap a screen protector on my phone and cover it with an Apple silicone case. I don’t like micro scratches on the screen, scratches on the stainless steel side, risking a camera lens crack, etc. even if I am careful with my devices and have AC+. All of that being said I have nothing against those who go naked.

Here's a question to everyone: Would you still care this much, and case-ify your iPhones, if it cost 50% what it is today?
Firebombing your point, but if it was 50% cheaper it would look like the old plastic S4 with ridged sides.

*shudder* 🫣

I’m sorry the S5. THIS horrid thing…

…I will never understand people who will walk around with devices with crack screens, scratches and scuffs. I take care of what I buy because that’s who I am.
Same. I'm proud to show others what my iPhone 6s+ looks like after seven years with no case. Only work it's ever had done to it was replacing the battery one year ago. Other than that, no dings, dents, scratches or cracks.

Reading this forum it seems many of us are really careful with our (new) iPhones.

Some of us buy Pro partly because of the looks but then we slap a case on it and hide all the beauty to protect it.

Some of us go naked but then we stress it and get upset if there is even a small scratch on it.

My question is - is this normal? When did phones become these jewelry like items that we handle with kid gloves?
iphone owners need to embrace some wabi sabi

When I used to use android phones I never used cases. The htc one m8 I remember had some dings and scratches here and there but to me it added character to the phone.

These iPhones now are so expensive and with glass front and back make it more fragile. Cracked glass doesn’t have the same patina as weathered metal lol

Anyway I always use a case now 🤷🏾‍♂️ and am a fan of the leather cases and now prefer the feel of the a leather case in the hand than cold metal and glass

I guess I just don't see too much of a difference in being able to afford a $1000 phone and being able to afford a $1000 phone with a $199 AppleCare plan that affords you the peace of mind for likely the entire duration you have your device. $29 screen repair, $99 entire device replacement for other issues. I'd rather have invisible protection by paying a little more vs having a big plastic diaper over the whole thing with a bunch of dead skin cells and grime collecting in the seams.

It's not for everyone, I guess. But the value proposition of having that ~$1199 all-in device that is protected for years to come in the rare event you end up destroying it is awesome, vs having one in a case that if dropped at the right angle will still break and cause a $649+ repair bill.

My 13 Pro has fallen out of my lifted Jeep on the side of double black diamond trails in the middle of the wilderness directly onto rocks, multiple times. Gotten soaked, or covered in mud and washed off. Fallen out of my pocket. It never broke and just had a few scratches and marks after a year of use. I now have a 14 Pro and so far it's been as solid as the last.
Just remember, AppleCare is not available on certain countries.

I tried to go caseless but became too neurotic about the surfaces on which to set my phone. I kept worrying about scratching the phone on stone, brick, tile, pavement, concrete bench, metal picnic tables, dusty/grainy table, crumbs, wedding band on my finger, etc. After a few days I went back to a case. Ironic that it was more freeing with a case than without.

I take pride in taking care of the things and people in my life. Sometimes I pass down my phone to relatives and I feel better handing them a pristine old phone rather than a beat up example. I can pay for AppleCare to insure the device against myself, or I can slap on a slim clear case and call it a day. I chose the latter.

Also, talking about AppleCare on a single device is one thing but if I added AC to every phone in our family the cost would be enough to buy another iPhone (or two, depending on model). Instead of AC, every member of the family gets a case and screen protector and practices good care of their device.

As far as I’m concerned, it’s neither normal nor abnormal, it’s just relative.

People who treat their phones like jewelry like items which they handle with kid gloves are fine as long as you do not want them to be like you.

Yep. My Apple silicone case paid for itself recently. Dropped the iPhone on a slab pavers the corner of the case has a gouge but not the phone. Bear in mind the height of drop was 2 foot. But damn kinetic energy 🤣
Haha, your phone would have perished had you not used a case. I’ve been lucky with my silicone case as there is somehow not a mark on it despite having dropped it onto hard floors multiple times. Either way, I’d rather my case getting busted up than my phone.

Why would you not want to keep your belongings in good condition? I have never understood people who are careless with anything they own, whether it be something £10 or £1000, at the end of the day, you paid for it and it’s in your interests to keep it functioning/in good condition.

Ever since I was a kid, I've always overprotected my stuff.

Always.

That habit stuck with me until now, so this is completely normal to me. With my iPhones, I literally buy expensive, high-quality cases because... well,... they cost hundreds of dollars. I understand that the phone's beautiful design is hidden within the cases, but honestly? The fact that it exists inside the case is satisfactory enough for me.

The other thing for me is that, if I see one scratch, dent, etc. on the device, I'm going to feel bummed out about it and it will make my experience using the device a little less enjoyable for me. I know I know: first world problems, but I want my devices to look just like the day I bought them, so I'm pretty weird in that regard.

I don't know if that answered your question, but that's just my two cents on the matter.

Exactly, I keep iPhone for years. My previous iphone was 6s before I upgraded to 13 mini last month. 6s still looks good due to screen protectors + case.

Well, those phones are still quite expensive for what they do and keep on increasing in price, so putting a case on it protects this investment, especially if you want to pass it on or resell later on.

I am exactly like you. I still have gaming laptops that are 12+ years old which I owned as a teenager in “as new” condition along with my old consoles and handhelds.

I keep my phones also and don’t resell them which means I have a nice collection of pristine iPhones. Pointless, I know, but I am somewhat of a collector.

People are different, and that's okay.

Personally, I've never had a case in my life, nor could I possibly understand why anyone would want one, but that's just me. The entire point of all the engineering and design that goes into the phone is to use it as created and sold. Using a case makes it all useless, it might as well be a wooden phone and you wouldn't care, because it's all covered anyway. Not to mention the bulk and weight it adds.

Besides, at least in my country, the price to replace a broken screen / back (non official channels) is marginally larger than a more expensive case, so in case the unthinkable happens, there is that option as well. I've replaced one screen and one back in 12 years of iPhones. AND I get to enjoy the phone as it is, throught all of its life. Same for the resale cost, the difference is marginal.

Not to mention how pointless it is to protect it anyway. The smartphone, by its very nature, is a product that's going to be obsolete in a few years maximum. In 3-4 years it's going to be sluggish and slow compared to new devices, the camera is going to be bad, etc. You can't have it last 20 years like a refrigerator (and those don't last that long anymore either, sadly), even if physically it's in pristine condition.

Not all cases are Otterbox Defenders. You should actually look around and see that there are thin, light and durable cases made of silicone which exist. Apple even sell them!

As all phones are now edge to edge, the only thing you are covering up is the glass back… which is common sense if you ask me!

It is beyond me why anyone would use a cover (and a screen protector): Hygiene. I have to clean and reinstall a lot of iPhones within the company of departing employees and they are unspeakably filthy while iPhones with no cases and screen protectors are fine.

I hope for you you’re not being obsessive over people being obsessive over protection and flawless condition

Proof that case, or no case, devices taken care of can still look good years later.

Not putting a case on it does not automatically mean that 'unprotected' it won't survive. Your implication seems to be that if you do NOT use a case, damage WILL be the ultimate result. That just is NOT my experience.

My suggestion, and I should really do this myself, is to use a case for the first 3-6 months. And then try to go caseless for a month. By then the novelty of New and Precious should have worn off, and it'll be like having a new device all over again.

One exception maybe is with leather cases, sometimes the case itself is quite pleasant to hold. I'm still going to do this sometime in the next few months, because the slimmer profile when naked is so nice.

Or go caseless when you're going to a special event, like a wedding reception or someplace you know you won't be exposing it to much hardship. Having a slimmer/sleeker phone with a suit is not a bad motivator.

You’ve destroyed 2 phones by your own admission despite being very careful.

So it is your experience.
