Word 2011 always crashes with El Capitan when I try to edit a large document with clip-art, drawings and formulas. It's totally unusable for me.

*Sigh*

Must we get into this debate in every Office-related thread. I loved Pages '09, but iWork simply can't cut it for a very large group of users. Am I going to collaborate on a Word document using Pages? Nope, there goes formatting. As a power user of Excel I can assure you that Numbers is nothing compared to the capability of Excel.

iWork may be fine for you, but not many others - hence this thread.

That'a true but you can try these options: Office 365 Online or LibreOffice.
At least for a while.
I've worked many time with the first one and it works really well.

Office online is really good. I actually haven't had any issues with EC and Office:2016 but until there is an update, I'm going to play it safe and use Office in my VM.

I've had tons of issues (especially with Outlook) on the betas, but I must say it all works fine on the released El Capitan version. Outlook hasn't crashed at all so far *knocks on wood*

OH YES! Excel under El Cap now uses () for negative numbers with the Accounting format!!!!! I could cry! In Yosemite, Excel went from ($500) to -$500 which is not acceptable!

My experience is the same as kissmo. I've had no issues with El Capitan and Office 2016.

I left 2011 in place while I was trialing the 2016 Preview, but before I installed the 2016 release, I followed online instructions to delete all traces of Office 2011. Then I installed 2016. Perhaps you should wipe all traces of Office and reinstall 2016 from scratch.

Hi Jhfenton, do you have a link for the 'how to' delete all traces from 2011? Thanks, CHR

Add me to the list of people affected by this. I just got a brand new 12" Macbook. I installed El Capitan and Office 2016, both were fresh installs. Word crashes when I try to select a long block of text. Very freaking annoying. I'm a full time writer and Word is essential to my daily work.

Looking for more confirmation of Office 2016 working well with the official El Capitan release. Like just about everyone else, I had major issues with Office 2016 on the El Capitan Betas. I just bought a new Macbook Pro for work and have Office 2016 installed. I want to pull the trigger on the El Capitan install but not if my Office apps are going to crash on me.

Did the same as well. Have you updated to 15.14.0? I didn't try using any of the Office apps till I updated all of them.

Edit: Nvm, it does seem to crash when I select a very long block of text. I've never tried doing that which was why everything seemed to work fine for me.

Well, I did a clean install of El Capitan, followed by the Office 2016 installation, and finally updated all the Office apps with the Microsoft AutoUpdate. Haven't had time to test all of it but Word seems to be working fine here. I think the issues that a lot of people are experiencing might be due to the left-over files from Office 2011.

I just had Office:2016 lock up on me too and I had to force quit it. This is on a clean install of EC with a new install of 2016. 2011 was never installed.

I also need confirmation that El Capitan and Office are playing nicely. I'm a student and need Word for school! I have both 2011 and 2016 installed since I had 2011 already, and my school was offering 2016 for free as part of Office 365.

They are going to crash. Not every time but sooner than later they will crash.

I have had absolutely no problems with Office 2016 on El Capitan. The only problem I have experienced was that in Outlook 2016 my Apple Calendars do not appear since installing Beta 2. This is also the case with other apps that access Apple's Calendar as well such as Fantastical 2, OmniFocus 2, Desktop Informant. The only app that was not affected was BusyCal 2. I believe the problem is more with Apple in this case since it involves so many different applications.
Are you opening an Excel workbook with macros? If I open an Excel 2011 workbook that has NO macros, I have had no problem so far. But, if I open a workbook WITH macros and Mail or Safari are open in the background, Excel will go into a not responding state within a minute or so.

Outlook 2016 15.14.2 is awful, my internet service provider email works perfectly but my hotmail (POP3) email will receivebut 99% of the time will not send at all, i receive a 'connection to the server failed or was dropped - error 3253. If I open Apple Mail, in come all my mail through hotmail. And the other issue with Office 2016 is they programs take longer to open compared to Office 2011.

Solution for Outlook 2011, as read in one of the comments on this site https://derflounder.wordpress.com/2...os-x-el-capitan-and-the-pinwheel-of-patience/

You must hold shift at open thru close of Outllok, then restart normally (without shift).

OR

I solved the issue.

flag the “open in low resolution” in the info of the outlook application. go in finder, application folder, open office 2011, right click on outllook and get info menu. flag the option, restart outlook and work fine.

I believe that is related to the new metal engine. I had problem in the past when move to retina mac and outlook was not ready.

My theory is that some cloud based check in when you first open a document is failing and it locks up the entire suite of office apps.

It happens once every couple hours when I try to open a file and I have to go in and force quit every office app.
