MacRumors Newbie

Hi,

I am typing this from my Win 98 PC :( at home but I run a eMac computer lab at an elementary school complete with a G4 server running OS 10.3.8 server software. Prior to last March, the lab had 10 year old PowerMac 5260's and 5+ year old iMacs. I have used Apple computers for 20 plus years - make that 25 years at various jobs. I found that Mac users have always LOVED their Macs for good reasons. But, most of my use involves guessing at how to do things or fix problems at school. Luckily, the Mac software has always been very user friendly and the computers keep on humming along. But, MacRumors will be a great addition to my "I need help" resources.:D

Hi, i'm a recent mac-switcher.

This summer I got an ibook 12" 1.33 GHz right when they were released, and have been learning osX ever since. I've read these forums for a few months but just joined recently.

I know I haven't had the ibook for very long, but I just bought a used powerbook 1.33 GHz 15" that should be arriving early next week! I decided I wanted more mac :)

Glad to join and hopefully contribute here.

Thanks!

Hi,

maestro55 (Steve) here, I am a 17 year old geek from Texas. I recently joined the forums here, mainly for the photo gallery to drool over everyones set-ups. In the photo gallery forum I have told a little about myself, but lets begin here with my first Apple computer. Well, it wasn't *MY* computer, but my dad had set-up an Apple IIgs and I remember it having two games that we used to play. One was a spelling game, and the other I can't remember. Anyhow, I was just a little boy then, I mean like 4 or 5 years old, and I don't recall very much, but I have been around computers since as long as I can remember. My first Macintosh was a Mac LC3, I still remember when I got my first CD-ROM drive (external of course). By the time I was nine I was pretty good at using Mac OS (when I was 9, I think it was 7.1) I even had a Powerbook Duo Dock for a brief time. The machine I had using 7.1 was a Centris something, I don't remember the model, but I sold it to a friend who traded it for a PC (this was at a garage sell several years back.. we had gotten an old Windows 95 machine that I shared with my other siblings. My dad had his own computers and my stepmom had her machine. I think it was a dumb thing, but I didn't use the Centris very much since I had the PC to use and so I sold it. A Macintosh Classic went with it. These machines came from my dad, who works in education and so I have always been around Macs. There is a picture of me in my room at around 10 years old, I had my little office; duo dock, centris, and classic :) I regret not having those today. ) We got an emachines with Windows 98 on it after that, and I still didn't have any macs. Then 3 and half years ago I got my own room, I had a job and so I bought the componets to build a computer. It ran windows for about a year, but then a made a switch to linux. I ended up with the old emachines (now running Linux). My dad hooked me up with a windows laptop that I have for my windows machine. I have two macs running OS 9.1 (both identical PowerMac 5500 series all-in-ones. These came from surplus since the schools around here switched to imacs a few years back) So I am pretty diverse in my computing.

So.. in 1999, I was 10 years old, my dad bought a Powerbook G3 (wallstreet? sounds about right.) and I fell in love with it. I wanted a Powerbook G3 until they came out with the Powerbook G4. 2006 I plan on making my dream come true. I plan on purchasing a 12inch Powerbook G4. I hope that till then and after that point I will be able to make friends here on this site and get to learn a lot of things that I have yet to know about Mac OS. I took a certification test free online while this website was giving a free trial. I failed the Mac OS X certification test. I have a lot to learn.

A bit more background information on what I want to do after highschool and my computing experience. I want to go into networking, and I plan on attending Texas State Technical College in Fall 2006. Most of those guys are PC guys, but I will be sporting my 12inch Powerbook. Though I am going into networking I find that because macs have a terminal and also are based on Unix (being able to run Linux apps native, I do believe so?) I will be able to do everything I need on a Powerbook. I have A LOT to learn about computers, I would consider myself a novice still in many ways. I would be on an Intermediate level in other ways.. I get around in a Text Editor all right, I am learning Java, but I couldn't tell you how to set up the mutt mail client.

..oops.. I get carried away. It is now close to 3AM and my bed seems to be calling my name.

For some reason when I first actually registered at MacRumors after reading posts for a few days, I never got around to introducing myself in this thread! Now here it is a couple months later....

I made the big switch from PC to Mac back in mid-October and my first Mac was the 20" iMac (rev B). Shortly thereafter they announced the new revisions of the PBs and I decided that since I loved my iMac so much I wanted to be mobile, too, with a Tiger inside (rather than Windoze like my old laptop), so I got me a 15" PB BTO with the faster hard drive and maxed-out RAM. I love both of my machines and have been enjoying spending lots of time on both of them every day!

Welcome, newbies :)

Some tips:

- Read the FAQs before asking questions. Can save you some grief.
- Try to learn how to use the search function. It's not perfect, but it can be worth a shot.

Looking for Lucy Butler
New guy here. FrankBlack's the name. Okay, Okay. So it's the name of my favorite fictional TV character.

Age: Older then the average demographic for on-line forums. Put it this way: I remember weekly air raid horn tests, and doing "duck and cover" in first grade.

I use Macs on the job, as well as at home. However, I am also compelled to use windows on the job as well. But, I have learned to turn this into an advantage: Knowing how to use both, I tell people I prefer the Mac platform all the way. Most windows only folks just shake their heads, but on one occasion, I thought the head on this particular windows-only guy was going to explode.

That would have been messy.

This forum came well-recommended. So far, it looks like a fine, well-managed forum.

Hi I joined today but have been a regular browser for a while. Glad to be part of this great forum! :) I am a graduating college super senior with a concentration in Audio Recording Technology, and I recently made the BIG SWITCH from PC to Mac forever. :D I love OSX and despise Windows even more now that I've switched lol. I hope to work in a recording studio upon graduating and hope to improve upon my home studio in the years to come. I love Macs! :D

Hi, I am also new to this forum. I currently use a windows computer, but will be switching to a Mac laptop as soon as they come out with intel in them. The first computer I used was a Mac back about 12 years ago, and recently have rediscovered them as having lots of features for a good price. Im a soon to be college student, I will be double majoring in business administration with emphasis in finance and political science. I enjoy golf, politics, snowboarding, photoshop, music, traveling(going to Italy and Greece in July), and computers.

Hi - I’m new to the forum and to macs in general. Found my way here both by a random link and through a friend. Searched the forum after user error & surprisingly found that someone else had a similar experience.

Just wanted to say hello rather than skulking around. Best loved tips most graciously welcomed. Thanks for having me!

Wow. I just had to say something. I've never seen the name "squidge" used before (other than with me) until now. My nickname was squidge when I was little.
