Hello All
Hello All,
New Member here!
Here a little about me. (Not that my computer life is interesting at all)
The first computer I ever touched was an Apple (Circa 1982-83) We're talkin' grade school computer class on an American Army base in Germany. I really liked it but all we ever did was word processor type stuff. Maybe this started my negative Mac views. You know: stupid impressionable kid.
When my Atari 2600 game console showed up in our shippment from the States it was missing some important parts. (Read: Some idiot put a crowbar through the middle of it while opening the crate.)
So my parents bought me my first computer: A Commodore 64
It seems like all the kids who had a computer back then had a Commodore 64.
From that moment on I was a Commodore bigot. Even so far as to buy an Amiga 500 when getting software for one was just as painful as it could be.
In 1990 I went to work for Motorola. They had nothing but Mac's as far as File and Print services. I got a very strong dose of the Mac way (or maybe it was the Motorola Mac way.) That little blinking ? Disk or the unhappy face was very frustrating.
As I advanced at Moto the opportunity to become a Systems Administrator presented itself. Not just any Sys Admin but the glorified, Smug, I know more than you, Unix Systems Admin. Wow, and I loved it. Wouldn't you know my new boss was an Amiga bigot also. I think he runs that Amiga 1000 to this day.
Anyway I got into being a Unix Admin loved it (Still Do) Yadda Yadda Yadda.
An some point in the mid 90's I decided I needed a computer that I could use to actually share files with people other than my boss. So I was dragged kicking and screaming into the PC world. And although I have never really liked the M$ (that seems to be the standard way of refering to that company on this site) way, I have nothing against them as long as they're not in the server room!
Now that's just a brief overview but I tend to talk too much. Maybe my character limit should be like 50.....
Oh well you could have stopped already if I bored you to tears...
OK so why the heck am I here!
My wife and I had our first baby in December 01 and I was determined to have all the digital video and pictures I could take of this precious child. I bought a Sony F707 5 MegaPixal Digital Still camera in Nov 01 and a Sony TRV27 Mini DV Video Camera last summer. Both of these cameras have worked flawlessly for me. Not to confuse things, I purchased a Sony PCV-RZ14G Digital Studio bundle computer last fall. This computer had it all the Giga Pocket capture card, Firewire iLink, 120 Gig HD, Blah Blah Blah...Did I mention the Power supply that catches on Fire!!!
Suffice it to say it is still a problem and I recently started the process of looking for a replacement. I will deal with this computer some more once I get a reliable computer. I have to send it to San Diego which would leave me computerless. My old Dell computer has already become a plaything for my 18 month old daughter. (Read: Very sticky keyboard, and very, very broken OS.) Let's just mash every button on this thing and see what happens.
Now about a replacement computer:
My wish list:
Killer digital picture/video editing.
Basic Email/File and Print services.
Did I mention Killer digital picture/video editing.
If it runs any form of Unix is a Huge +
This is my story and I'm sticking to it.
Now I knew that the New Mac OS was based on a Unix platform. But from my previous (yet limited) experience I didn't think there was any way they would give the user access to the shell.
Several weeks ago I'm in a store looking for my next PC purchase when I walk by the Macs. Now some angel must have known I was coming because there was a terminal open on the screen. I think I Pee'ed myself. Since then I have been doing research on the computers and available software(the software thing is still a pretty sore subject from my Amiga days)
I've been looking at the Dual 1.42's but now I'm waiting just to see what happens next week.
I went to the Premiere of Final Cut Pro 4 at the local CompUSA and yes I think it kicks Premiere 6.5's tail. So now I have the Final Cut Pro 4 software sitting on my desk just waiting for a new computer. And I now have a soon to be very Unused package of Premiere 6.5.
Live Learn and Learn and Learn............
Oh about me: I'm just a computer dude that talks too much.
Regards,
