I don't see how 1GB is really helpful. I mean, the OS probably won't even fit! So what happens if you want to stick commonly used applications on it?

So, firstly, does anyone know if it is possible to have more than one? I mean, is it possible that the MBP could have two 1 GB Flash memory cards? Or more?

1GB flash card today. 128GB flash card tomorrow. I've noticed that new computer technologies are always slightly disappointing when first introduced and take a few years to get going.

I remember when a DX 486 120mhz was faster than a Pentium 586 90mhz, and people were saying the pentiums were *****. Look how far the Pentium came since then.

And secondly, off topic, but does anyone know if you can do a RAM disk in OSX like you could in 9? Because that is the kind of thing I see Robson being used for. User picks a commonly used app, sticks it in the flash memory, and it loads and runs at a much higher speed.

No. OS X manages the memory far better than you could. If you want an app to open quickly, leave it open in the background/ in the Dock. The OS will take care of all the RAM / Flash shuffling.

Even when RAM disks were around, with OS9's primitive memory management, there was some debate over their disadvantage of taking away valuable main memory space.

So weird!!! People sitting on half dead 7 year old G4s are ready to wait for months and months for SR.

This is an Official "WAITING FOREVER" thread!!!

If you've been waiting 7 years I hardly think a few months is a big deal, especially when it means you wont be buying outdated hardware.

Buying now would be, IMO, the height of stupidity with so much good stuff round the corner (like SR, Leopard, iLife 07 etc).

I'm waiting and I have a 1.25ghz G4 Powerbook. I can't wait to replace it.

I've been waiting for Santa Rosa ever since the Core Duos were released last year. People with C2D MBPs will say Santa Rosa doesn't offer much more than the current machines, but they do. That's why so many people are waiting for them.

Agreed.

And it's not 7, it's 6.5 :p And it's hardly half dead. It still works perfectly, it's just a tad slow, that's all. That and it doesn't run the applications I am starting to really need, such as Matlab.

Just imagine how fast my SR MBP is going to feel when I finally get one, and seriously flog it...

This is what happened last year. People were waiting for Core2Duo, which were only released at the end of october and the same people are waiting for Santa Rosa now. And most likely the same people will be waiting for Penryn...

Well I've been waiting for SR and Leopard ever since the MacBooks were first released. I intend to buy as soon as both are out. I'm really excited about getting my first Mac, but I'm deffinitely waiting until it's worth buying. I don't want to buy now and end up with outdated hardware and outdated software within months...

Of course it will be a significant update, but more updates will come afterwards. It's called progress and anything you get will be updated to something more powerfull 6 months later.

It will happen no matter when you buy. I agree on Leopard though..

Hardware wise, deffinitely. You have to take the plunge at some point, and no matter when you do what you buy will be eventually outdated. However I think that when SR and Leopard are released is the sweet spot for when to buy for this year. At least with Leopard you'll have around two years before 10.6 is out.

I'm not exactly waiting for SR, more waiting for Leopard and iLife. Of course, SR would be a huge bonus and a massive step up from this TiBook, however I'd wouldn't mind having a C2D or even a CD MBP aslong as I could have Leopard too. SR? No big deal. The more you build up your hopes on technology, the more disappointed you'll be when your false expectations haven't been met.

I don't really care about SR, I just want apple to actually release a graphics card worthy of the "pro" model. It would be nice it was a DX10 one too.

Not the same people, maybe same type - we're just making smart purchases.

At work we had 1993 blueberry G3s, which we just replaced in 2004. Macs last a good long time if you take care of them. And when you replace them, you also want something that will last as long, the newest technology available, etc - at the cheapest price. It makes no sense to buy x number of macs now and then buy x copies of Leopard when it comes out in June. ;)

As for waiting and periods. No, I wasn't around waiting for C2D etc. I suspect for many people, it's just the right time to buy a computer and they're going to get the best one they can. I'm graduating this year, so the goal is to get a computer this year and Leopard just happens to be around the corner, so why not?

I think it was mentioned before but I would like to see a 15' widescreen macbook.

My Hope is they really beef up the MacBook... Because I think they are really really going to beef up the MBP

that's more me...I'm just waiting for leopard....If a C2D can do what I need then why would I want to pay more for something else that can serve my purpose as well? That's my thinking, but I would like to have the updated OS.

If anything I'm waiting for leopard so the current refurb c2d prices will be lowered. :)

I am personally waiting for Leopard, Santa Rosa, and hopefully iLife 2007 to get a new macbook pro. I also hope they upgrade their hardware alittle more as well. Looking for like:

-2.33 GHz C2D
-2 GB RAM
-atleast X1800 with 256 MB VRAM
-120 to 160 GB harddrive

for the $2000ish Macbook Pro.

I'm waiting for Leopard and SR.

Was going to get a MBP last year when the core duo's where released but ended up spending my money on other things then never got round to having enough spare to get the MBP.

I'm not desperate for a laptop so might as well wait the 2-3 months for Leopard and SR instead of splashing out now, it also gives me time to put some money aside for my purchase.

Think I'll be going for the Black Book now. I prefer the smaller size for when out and about and will only use it for word processing / web browsing / email / and dev work (java/j2ee/ maybe objective-c and cocca if i can get into it) so don't need to much power as I got a decent desktop .

It'll be my first mac, I only get to play on my sisters Mac Book when I change settings on the router and she can't access the net :D

Nope. I'm another person who is waiting now but going to buy as soon as SR ships. I have a moderately long term view about computer purchases, every 4 years or so. As stated previously the stuff that's coming out, when taken together, represents a significant uptick in value. I want to get that extra value. When the original Intel MBPs came out I decide that I didn't want a first generation product. When the C2D MBPs came out I looked ahead and decided that I could deal with my old PowerBook for another year until I could get the big jump in features coming up. Penryn is going to come out at some point but the incremental value is less. In 3-4 years I imagine that I'll wait for the next high value upgrade is coming up.

The jump from CD to C2D wasn't as big as the jump that we'll see in a few months. That was pretty much a processor swap, this will change many components and completely replace the software:

New 2nd Gen Meroms (2.0, 2.2, 2.4 & 2.6Ghz)
New chipset (with 800Mhz FSB)
New integrated GPU (X3000 for MacBook)
Draft-n WiFi (as standard)
Possible LED screens & resolution increase
New OS (leopard)
New iLife (07/08)
Possible new iWork included
Possible new/faster RAM (isn't there DDR3 support in SR?)

I, personally, think that it's work waiting 2-3 months for all those things. I wouldn't advice anyone to buy a Mac at the moment, especially if you're looking at a MacBook which will get the biggest upgrade because of the improved integrated graphics along with all the other stuff.

If we were to buy now practically every part of our computer would be out of date within months. This is not the "waiting forever" thread, it's the "making an informed, lasting and good purchase" thread.

I just thought I would chime in with my 2 cents. I'm saving for college next year and at the same time a Macbook(among a million other daily things). I'm waiting until the new version of Macbooks come out with SR and Leopard as it will be my first Mac ever(used PC's since I was 6, until now at 18...)and I want the best I can get. This will be the biggest Mac upgrade for awhile, so why not wait and get the best bang for your buck. Just my opinion.

I am in a similar boat as you all. I am on a 12" 1.33 PowerBook. I love it but it is certainly slow compared to todays standards. I am waiting for SR+Leopard+iLife. Core Animation is the feature I am most excited about due to it's ability to transform UI in every single application. Why has iLife been 'delayed'? Because it needs CoreAnimation and therefore 10.5. The adoption of Leopard will be the fastest in Apple's 31 year history and therefore needs to be quite stable, otherwise the press will eat Apple for lunch. WWDC is shaping up to be a remarkable event.

I love my new Apple TV by the way.
