Explain how?!!! (I understand that we only had minor updates in the last 2 years...:/ )

Sorry, I should have clarified, I meant on the software side of things. There will be hardware upgrades at the usual intervals of course. I meant it in the terms of Leopard mainly(along with iLife, etc). I know you can just upgrade what you already have to the new OS, but why not get the perks of SR in the Mac as well, hence why I believe in waiting for Santa Rosa as that will bring a slew of new things to the Macbook as well:)

Product MacBook Pro
Recommendation: Buy only if you need it - Approaching the end of a cycle
Last Release October 24, 2006
Days Since Update 146 (Avg = 182)

I've been waiting for it to say "Buy only if you need it - Approaching the end of a cycle" since like January! Who's excited? I know I am!. . . even though almost everything on the buyers guide is way passed due for an update. Still happy haha :p

Well... I'm glad I did a little research before I pulled the trigger. I applied for an Apple Instant loan to buy a new 17" Macbook Pro to replace my 17" G4 PB. I started looking at these rumor sites just to see if there was something faster than the current 2.33 cpu. So tell me please... Is this update gonna happen by August???

And what exactly is this member whom I quoted saying? What is this buyers guide that he is talking about??

Thanks i advance for the info.

Regards,
Brad

***EDIT I found the buyers guide on the macrumors site. So how dependable are the sources of this info???

Ummm.... Very dependable???
They are the dates of previous hardware updates. "Reliability" doesn't really come into it. Obviously we can't say, "Oh, it says Updates Imminent, so new MBP's on Tuesday!" because we don't know what SJ is thinking. There is a very good chance that SR MBP's will be announced and released on the 11/12th of June, SJ's Keynote at WWDC2007. Nothing more can really be said. The processor speed will certainly jump to 2.4, and possibly 2.6, if that particular chip is released.

That would be most excellent.
I was gonna do it this week but I might as well wait now.
Only bummer is if I wait until then I might not be able to get as much for my 17" G4 1.67. Oh well... I guess I will have to take what I get.

Whats the deal on these LED screens? Does the LED refer to the kind of backlighting? To be honest with you I think that the screens have been the weak point on all the Books released. (just my opinion of course) I look forward to having a nice updated, evenly backlit screen.

Roll on WWDC!

Yes, LED refers to the backlighting. The cold cathode fluorescent lights that are used in the MBP at the moment will probably be replaced by a huge array of densely packed LEDs to provide the light. This should make the MBP screns more evenly lit, and should drop the power required to run them considerably (I think it's like 1/2 or even 1/3) which would mean a nice battery life boost. In terms of colour and contrast, I don't know. Some are better, some are worse. I suppose that stuff is all up to the quality of the LCD panel you put in front of them.

Actually it depends on the lighting.

LED backlit monitors where the light is emitted by a three colour composite (ie: clusters of 3 LEDs) produce richer colours than those that only use white LEDs. However since the MBP is a laptop most likely in the interests of power consumption we will get the crappier option.

Doesn't make it bad, but at least it will probably be a better (less grainy) display that uses less battery and doesn't burn out as easily as CF backlighting. Even if it is just as crappy (ie: grainy) it still runs on less power and lasts longer, and we all know a primary concern of the "I owned my iBook for 7 years" crowd is how the backlight eventually dims out and dies.

We'll see. Although if I were to guess, firstly I would say the 3 colour option would use slightly less power, for a few different reasons. Secondly, I think that Apple will use the 3 colour option, at least for the MBPs. It would just be a bunch more expensive. But we all know that Apple aren't afraid to use expensive parts.

So, do you have any idea just how much extra battery we are looking at? Like 5 mins, or an hour?

Yes I agree.

That would be most excellent.

I can hardly wait to see what happens at WWDC07, I want the Macbook Pro so bad I can feel it. :apple: :apple: :apple:

Crossposted from another thread in the news forum regarding the updates to the Macbook line:

I work at a Staples here in Calgary, Canada in the computer department and had an interesting observation regarding Apple products a few days ago. Take from it what you will, but every week we get a list of products to send back to the manufacturers (recalls, defective product, stuff they are replacing with new products, etc), and the list this week included iLife '06 and iWork '06. We had two copies of each, and we were instructed to send back one of each.

Don't know if that means anything, but you'd think that if they were getting stores to send back stock of those products, they'd be replacing it fairly soon. Who knows.

Adding to this--and something I found even more fascinating: I had a gentleman on the phone today who was looking for a black Macbook. I knew we were sold out, so I checked our computer to see if we had any on order and noticed two things:
1) We didn't have any on order.
2) There was an "xxx" in the item title line, which means the item has been discontinued, or in the case of computers, printers and the like, the model is being replaced or we are not carrying it anymore.

I know for a fact we are continuing to carry the Macbooks, we spoke with the Apple rep the other day about carrying the Macbook Pro. I then checked our other Macbook models (not the Pro, I will do this tommorow) and they were all marked with the "xxx" label.

What this tells me is that Apple will likely be replacing the Macbooks very soon. Of course, there have been steady rumors of a refresh to the Macbook/Pro line in the way of Santa Rosa chipsets, among other things. What that spells out for Leopard, it seems un-Apple-like that they would release the new Macbooks and Leopard within a fairly short time frame of each other.

I'm also inclined to believe that Leopard will be released sooner rather than later (late April to mid-May?) because of this.

Wondering if anyone else works at a computer store has noticed this?

very interesting....does anyone think that apple will update the macbooks BEFORE santa rosa? because that would just kill me....

I Think Books Maybe May (I Really Think June) But Leopard Not Before June

Not likely. The developer betas are not nearly ready. I think we'll be lucky to get it by the June 11 SteveNote.

I suppose if the hardware is ready, they can release the Books with 10.4.9 and sell the early buyers Leopard in June.

Yeah, the Hitachi drives and grainy LCDs used in the current crop of MBPs are very expensive.

OK, I haven't done any research, but I'll withdraw my comment about Apple using expensive parts if you can find me another laptop with a 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo for less than the cost of the middle MBP.

Deal?

I seriously doubt this. I would say with 99% certainty (based on my opinions, of course) that the next MB upgrade will feature Santa Rosa.

Maybe Apple were not expecting so many people to buy Macbooks, and they have simply run out of stock, and they figure there's no point in spending a month making more old stock, when they'll be replaced in two months?

I mean, I would imagine that designs at Appe would be drawing to a close by now, prototyping reaching the end, and maybe even starting to make and assemble the new parts? I would imagine that if Apple don't yet have Centrino Pro boards, then they will really soon, so they have plenty of time to manufacture the new Macbooks and Macbook Pros, and build up a large inventory before their release?

I would imagine that building a couple of million Macbooks would take quite a while, possibly even over two months...

Well Apple got those new 3GHz Quad-core Xeons which aren't even officially announced yet by Intel, so it's possible that they could get Santa Rosa before the official launch too.

There's a difference between getting a new CPU, which takes all of 5 mins to rip open the case, and shove them in, and a completely new motherboard that basically requires a complete redesign of Apple's notebook line. Maybe Apple will get the 2.6 GHz Meroms before everyone else. Apple getting Santa Rosa early just means we won't have to wait for August to get new notebooks. The redesign is still going to take a long time.

But then again, the Macbook upgrade might not be nearly as impressive as the MBP upgrade. Maybe SR is an easy swapout, and considering the X3000 is part of SR, and internal flash memory might not even show up in the MB, maybe it will be released in a few weeks. But I still doubt it.

yeah, like taking the Rev A Santa Rosa gamble is such a great idea.

Mhm. So in that case, can you give me some indication as to what doesn't constitute a Rev. A computer, that you shouldn't buy, because it's bound to be flawed?

Geez, that's even worse than not buying cos there's something better around the corner.

Santa Rosa MB's and MBP's should be classed as Rev. C. (Original, Merom, SR)

Well they're obviously already working on the next revision of Macbook Pros. In fact, they're probably done and waiting to go into mass production. Intel probably just doesn't want them to do anything until they officially launch Santa Rosa in May.

I've been hearing rumblings from guys I used to work with at apple that they will be anounced the week after nab but won't ship for about a week to 2 weeks. Of course this is just hearsay from other people they work with and most people are in the dark until the day of (It was VERY VERY rare I ever got told for sure about a product until they day it came out) usually you discover it when the rest of the world does then the internal emails come out a couple hours after the fact.

Nothing to get excited over though simply santa rosa chipset swap and a 700 MHz bump in speed. :/ I do wish it would hurry up and come though I've been holding off for about a month waiting for the introduction, even though the current model would suit me just fine I always like to have the best that's out there and once SR ships you won't see any major improvements for at least a year.

You think they're going to put all their cards on the table in some poxy developer preview? Think on.

macbook redesign with SR

so do you think apple will redesign the macbook alot? just thinking. it'll be one year since the last design update. any ideas on what they will do to it?
